FreightVine August 2015

Animated publication

Editor’s Note: As the days of summer go quickly by and Labor Day gets closer, the August issue of the FreightVine is ready for you to view.

Thank you to the ALC Logistics, Grand Rapids, Kansas City and San Antonio offices, and Finance for writing the articles and to everyone that shared pictures. Enjoy the remaining days of summer! Did You Know . . . Even though Labor Day originated in Canada in 1872, the first Labor Day celebration in the United States was in New York City's Union Square on Sept. 5, 1882. It was planned by the Central Labor Union to appease city workers after numerous strikes and violence that occurred over the 12 hour work day. Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday of September every year since President Grover Cleveland declared that day Labor Day in 1894.

Hello ALC. Here in Charlotte, NC the ALC Logistics team continues to make big changes. First, a brief overview of what the ALC Logistics division does and then on to the changes and new initiatives we have been working on. Since 1994, the ALC Logistics division has been focused on providing managed LTL services to shippers across the U.S. Our team provides custom LTL software, freight shipment auditing, tracking and tracing, LTL carrier rate negotiation, and carrier contract management. We manage, audit and track over 80,000 LTL shipments a year for a select group of twenty-four (24) existing customers that use our custom LTL software each day, with an annual LTL spend of over $12 million. Our team in Charlotte consists of Mary John-Hutchison, Stephanie Conklin, Ashley Riddle and our two part-time students/interns, Katara Lucas and Anthony Lewis. Marnie Thomas recently moved to the Project Management division, but continues to work on LTL in ALX and with the ALC Logistics team on special projects. Matt Balsly operates out of Grapevine, TX providing customer sales and support, and all carrier contract negotiations and claims. In the past year, our teammigrated all of our customers to an upgraded LTL TMS platform. We are currently working on providing EDI load tendering, EDI tracking and tracing and EDI invoicing. In conjunction with the TMS team at Corporate, we are working to combine our LTL software and truckload TMS on one software platform to be able to provide a complete transportation solution to all shippers. A full EDI integration with LTL carriers will benefit all of Lastly, our group is working on the final stages of adding our full suite of LTL capabilities to the ALX desktop. A dozen or so offices currently use our customer website for LTL quotes and shipments for their customers. However, this is not an ideal solution as it still requires all brokers to use one site for quoting and then duplicate the same load building process in ALX. Once we have our LTL functionality added to ALX, it will be much easier for all offices to quote, create and move LTL shipments in ALX. Brokers will have full visibility of all our customers and potential new customers seeking an integrated solution. The TMS team already has several successful implementations underway.

shipments, truckload and LTL in one place. In addition, just like we do for our external LTL customers, our team will support all our brokers, negotiate LTL carrier rates and contracts, and track/trace and audit/settle all LTL shipments for the company. So, look for more news and changes at ALC Logistics in 2015.

Finance (to learn how to pronounce Finance, click here ) By: Nick Mihalopoulos (to learn how to pronounce Mihalopoulos, click here )

I think it’s been some time since Finance has written in the FreightVine and we are happy to share with ALC what has been happening here! But, first, we should look at some historical events to see how it happened. On May 16, 1994 some may remember that Joaquin Balaguer was elected President of the Dominican Republic, but here at ALC we remember it as the day Valerie Logan started in LA Sales and then soon after began spearheading ALC’s Credit and Collection efforts! You also may remember that on August 12 th 1908, the transportation industry was forever changed when Henry Ford built the first Model T. But, more importantly 90 years later, Steve Doerfler started at ALC and some years later coined the phrase, “Built Finance Tough.” Wednesday, March 8 th 2000 was a huge day for “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” as it brought in 31.98 million viewers. But, here in Finance we remember it as the first day Erin Lopez began approving credit for our next million-dollar customer! Finally, for Honda drivers in India, they remember September 6, 2011 as a day when their car was part of a massive recall for a faulty power window switch that could cause a fire. Here at ALC, Nick Mihalopoulos began recalling Excel formulas that could cause a “#VALUE!” error. We’ve had some big milestones here recently. In March, Erin celebrated her 15-year anniversary and we went to see Wicked to celebrate. It was a great show and I was surprised that the Wicked Witch was much nicer than some of the Dun and Bradstreet reports we run on prospective customers. Steve just celebrated his 40 th birthday in July and has recently begun reviving his German/Austrian roots. So, if he happens to see one of those “wicked” Dun and Bradstreet reports on a customer asking for credit you’ll probably receive a big “NEIN!” Valerie recently visited Phoenix, Cleveland and Louisville to help fine tune some of their accounting and collection procedures. We met in “The Finance Conference Room” to discuss her visits and were happy she met and spent one-on-one time with those offices. Now, she’s headed across the big pond for a European vacation! Once the European Central Bank heard Valerie was coming to Europe they asked if she could help them with a special collections’ assignment in which she answered OXI! See Demetrios for translation.

Lastly, we’re beginning to interview for our newest Finance teammember (Business Analyst) and we’re excited to see them help take ALC’s reporting and Business Intelligence to the next level!

Celebrating Erin’s 15 th Anniversary at Wicked! Valerie, Erin, Steve and Nick

Written by: Leonora Winegar and Jeffrey VanAbbema As we sit and review the current happenings within the Grand Rapids, MI (Spring Lake) office these past couple of months, a few thoughts come to mind: Nursery Season, Health & Beauty Aids and ALX Lund University. For those of you out there who have had the pleasure, the Nursery Season is a rollicking, “where-did-the-day-go”, three month-roller-coaster ride. Each day is a replay of yesterday’s sitcom episode, starting with the whiteboard of open loads and the ever-entertaining cast of characters calling in on them. These higher-maintenance loads always make for lively conversation as you explain the nursery requirements; yes it can go on a van (until it gets too hot), then it’s reefer only (because the plants might bake), but some are power only, or maybe the plants are on the floor, or maybe it’s a rack load. One-wayor round-trip shipments with one to multi drops of 20+ stops, driver unload, tailgate of plants, pulling racks to tail; leave racks and pick up racks; average 3 to 5 hours to load/unload, no detention (unless maybe I can get you detention). Oh, and by the way, the three inches of mud left in your trailer is our gift to you. These loads always present a challenge, but we manage to find carriers to do them, and at a decent profit margin for Allen Lund Company. It was a banner year for our “Ohio” nurseries. For the GR office the “Ohio” nurseries are defined as the nursery customers that span from points on the East Coast to Ohio; most lanes move from these points to other nurseries in the Midwest. It was also a good season for the Michigan nurseries—this year we added several new Michigan-based customers that had a good first spring shipping season, with a few that will carry into fall shipping. Not to be overlooked, strong and steady are HBA (Health & Beauty Aids) like hand sanitizer or lotion and OTC (Over the Counter) medications like cough syrup and generic pain relievers. I would venture to say that the majority of folks reading this article who shop at Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target, Walgreens, Costco, Rite-Aid, Family Dollar or Sam’s Club (and many more stores) have some of these very products in your home. With spring behind us we have our usual midsummer lull until both nursery and our other customers pick up again as we enter the fall. During this slow time we have each been taking the opportunity to focus on honing our system skills through Lund University. To date, several in

the office have met /exceeded the 4-hour requirement and everyone else is scheduled to “go to school”. With all the ALX updates, these sessions have offered us the opportunity to take full advantage of our system resources—to take the next step and to look beyond the “same” way of doing things. Soon, who knows…we may be customizing reports on the “Match”, or on the WB “History” button, create custom reports, and add columns to Compute RPM, or even delve into the murky waters of the Report Server. It is easy to get stuck in a system slump and only learn or use what is needed for your everyday tasks. These classes can only expand our future opportunities. This week Big AL came to town and the GR office again will represent ACL for the 3 rd year running in the Grand Haven 2015 Coast Guard Grand Parade. Big AL visited a few of the Michigan nursery customers, and this weekend Big AL will be there to celebrate the Grand Haven’s Young Bucs’ baseball end of season. On Sunday, Big AL will even be going to church to take the kids in the youth group for a ride. The week following the Coast Guard Parade, we will be hitting the greens for the 2015 Office Golf Scramble Party. We have a few real players in the house to balance out those of us who are excited just to make contact with the ball. Swing!! And a Miss! ….Swing!!! And a Miss!!.... Swinggg!!!! Fore!!!! Truly, we enjoy the pleasure of each other’s company. Aside from the people who joined our GR team within the last 3 years, as a group we have been together from 9 to 22 years. Through good and bad economies, through personal gains and losses, we are in many ways a family:

When you walk into our office there is a feeling of camaraderie. We laugh and kid around with each other. Some days we can drive each other crazy. We arrange lunches around the nap-room couches. We know what you like or don’t like on your sandwich or pizza. We eat off each other’s plate. We tell and retell the same old stories (but still laugh). We coach each other’s kids in team sports.

We are there to support and offer solitude in each other’s sadness. We are there to High Five and celebrate the joys in each other’s life. We are Family. But we always welcome a visit, so stop on by and we’ll bake a cake.

Until then, we’ll leave the light on for you.

Written by: Joe Creedon I am going to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come… It’s ok you can finish singing the song. Welcome to Kansas City! KC is not just another cow town in flyover country. It is home to the Negro Leagues’ baseball Museum, the Kansas City Jazz Museum, the Royals (2014 ALCS Champs in case you were asleep last October), a world class performing arts center in the Kaufman Center and the best barbeque in the world. Our crew has years of service ranging from 20 years (Rowland) to three years (Sally). Rowland joined the Allen Lund Company 20 years ago and has been our Assistant Manager for roughly a third of that time. You can call in bright and early most mornings and get Rowland on the phone for some of his down home humor but be careful what you believe, he has been known to claim that he is 4’11” and 375 pounds. He grew up in Kansas City and lives in the KC area during the week but his home is a couple of hours south where he owns and runs a farm on the weekends. His farm consists of what he refers to as the shack (I have seen pictures, it’s not a shack) 80 something acres of land and a varying amount of cattle. He has a passion for hunting and I just found out he has not missed a deer season since he turned 18. Next up is Dave Hatten. Dave is married and lives not too far from the office. He was raised down in Southern Missouri somewhat close to the Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma lines. He is an avid hunter and plans hunting trips to remote places well in advance. A few years ago he spent a week or so in Wyoming hunting and had to pack his gear in on horseback. He also has a bow-hunting trip planned for next year. Some things you may not know about Dave are that he is a former OTR driver and when he graduated high school he hit the road working as a carney for a relatives’ traveling carnival. Dave works as a broker here in the office and also splits some of his time doing business development looking for new shippers and growing existing shippers. John Trelow, where do I begin? Born and raised in the central Missouri town of Sedalia. His hometown is the home of the Missouri State Fair. John, like the other two I just mentioned also enjoys hunting. He is married and they have a handful of kids between them. John has been with us for four and a half years and handles a lot of our quoting and operations work. John had a varied work experience when he came to ALC. In his previous jobs he worked for a funeral director and more recently in an eye bank retrieving eye tissue for transplants.

Our most recent employee is Sally Yendrek. Sally is originally from Southern California and like myself finds herself transplanted here in the heart of the Midwest. Sally is married and has a few adult children out of the house and one child still living at home. Sally is extremely involved with and serious about her faith. In the office Sally handles our admin tasks, collections, carrier setups, and basically anything I throw at her. Some of her family resides in Mexico and Sally is bi-lingual, speaking both English and Spanish. She is our in-house translator with some carriers and if we have to make calls down to the border area. Lastly, there is me. I moved here from Chicagoland eight years ago and before that I lived in NY, having grown up on Long Island and then moving to Queens, NY after I got married to my wife of nearly 27 years. We have five children between the ages of 24 and 11. When I am not at work or doing things around the house I like to spend some time fishing in our local lake. I also enjoy cooking with my daughters most weekends.

Written by: Troy Magers The San Antonio office is one of the oldest and most distinguished ALC offices, and in more ways than one. The office opened in 1987 and was the 5 th office for the growing Allen Lund Company. We are proud to say that one of the very first employees is still working for us today. Our least tenured employee is about to hit five years, we have 5 employees with more than 10 years, and 2 with over 25 years of service to the Allen Lund Company. Lena Acevedo: Lena was one of the two employees that opened this office in 1987. She has handled the accounting for us since day 1. I have told her that she is not eligible for retirement until the year 2035 at least! Aside from keeping our books straight, Lena loves to do crafts when she is not chauffeuring her husband Jesse around. That can be a full-time job by the way. Lena and Jesse just got back from a road trip that took them from Texas to South Dakota through Yellowstone Park then Vegas and back to Texas. I’m sure it was just a practice run for all the vacations they will take once she retires in 20 more years! Jesse Acevedo: Jesse just celebrated his 25 th year with ALC. Around here he is known as Jesse “Dough” Acevedo, because he knows how to make the “dough” (that’s money for those of you in Rio Linda). Jesse probably knows more about trucking than most people have forgotten. He grew up on the San Antonio produce market and his first vehicle had 18 wheels. If you ever have a question about the produce business, Jesse can answer it. Jesse and Lena take great pride in several things; namely the Spurs, and the Cowboys but most importantly in their work, and have been a major part of this office’s success. Patty Garcia: Patty has been with ALC for over 20 years, all but one of them with San Antonio. She took a “vacation” to McAllen for about a year before deciding to come back to where all the action is. Patty has handled just about every type of dry freight that can go on a truck and is pretty handy with the accounting side of things also. She spends just about every minute she can outside of work with her grandchildren or hunting at her ranch: or taking her grandchildren hunting at her ranch. Jesse Acevedo IV: Jesse has been with ALC for almost 12 years now. He started out with the Flatbed office in Atlanta, and then like every other Texan that moves away, he got back here as fast as he could. He has been with ALC-SA since 2007. He is a part of our Coke team and is

building a reliable flatbed business for us as well. He is a die-hard fan of the Red Sox, Cowboys and Spurs; and if you want to know what real Texas barbecue tastes like, he is your man. Randolph Castro: RD has been with us for 10 years now. He was hired as a Broker and promoted to Operations Manager last year. We have almost lost him a few times when he gets to thinking he is part of Nitro Circus. He forgets that he is not 18 anymore and that mountain biking is not very forgiving. And continuing on the adventurous theme, RD and his wonderful wife decided to start all over and have another child at 40 years old, talk about crazy! When he is not wrecking his bike on some mountain trail, RD loves to fish. One day he might actually catch one! Charlie Cetina: Charlie is only 3 months away from being our next broker to hit the 10-year milestone. He has handled his fair share of loads for Coke over the years and does a great job of covering the Southeast for us. Charlie is a great family man and our resident long distance runner. He stays in shape by running 5k’s; and with a 3 yr. old daughter at the age of 49 he better stay in shape! Ozzy Montoya: Ozzy was hired 8.5 years ago and since then he has moved his fair share of loads. There have been plenty of months where Ozzy has moved over 300 loads all by his lonesome. He is also our resident scholar at the ripe young age of 44. He will graduate in December with his bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Night school for the last 2 years while raising a family is a big commitment but worth it and we are proud of him. AJ Lopez: AJ came on board a little over 8 years ago as a Broker after having worked for HEB the previous 22 years. He is as detailed as they come and does an excellent job of handling our highest maintenance account, B&G. In his other life, AJ is one of the top High School football umpires in Texas. Fun fact on that: AJ has been officiating football games since 1984 and actually officiated a game I was playing in my senior year of high school. Rose Trevino: Rose is our “youngest” employee at 5 years this August. She was hired to work in Accounting, which she did until last year when she was promoted to Broker’s Assistant. She now works with AJ on the B&G account. Rose loves to travel and spend as much time as possible with her husband Matthew. Troy Magers: As for me, I have been with ALC for almost 16 years now, not bad considering Eddie once told me I wouldn’t make it past the 1 st year! I spend my time and money chasing after 3 kids and the various sports they play.

The family environment of Allen Lund Company definitely resonates in the San Antonio office. When you have been together for as long as we have, it is impossible to not share each other’s ups and downs. We look after each other, we are proud to say we are from Texas and proud to say we work for Allen Lund Company.

Lena and Jesse Acevedo (with Troy) have both recently celebrated 25 years with ALC

Food had to be a part of the celebration so we feasted on refreshing salads, yummy cheese dips, delicious fruit filled desserts and of course, Chex cereal Puppy Chow. In order to exercise our right brain muscles, we had a bucket of faux sand to make castles and we each created a different golf ball critter. Our menagerie consists of a pig, bee, dog, frog, turtle, crab, spider, ladybug, fish, elephant, giraffe, owl, peacock, two emoji's and Mike Wazowski.

ALLEN LUND: Ken Lund, vice president of La Canada, Calif.-based Allen Lund Co. and ALC Logistics, says the company’s transportation management system has been growing fast and helps shippers and receivers get dramatically more information about their shipments. Lund says it’s designed specifically for the challenges of shipping produce, and about $1.5 billion in freight spend is now running through the system.

This is our doggy Gunner. He's a Blue Heeler Australian Cattle Dog mixed with German Shepherd. Blue Heelers are extremely high energy dogs who need a lot of exercise and because of his breed, he keeps us active. He loves to go on hikes and he also really loves to visit the dog beach. We all spend a lot of time sitting and for many of our pets; they’re as sedentary as we are while they wait all day for us to get home from work. So, it’s as important for them as it is for us to get out and enjoy each other’s company, and get some much needed exercise. While I might feel tired after a long day at work, doing a few simple chores like replenishing hay, filling waterers and feeding grain, helps to re-energize me. If I look at it as exercise and not as chores, I’mmore motivated to get them done. In exchange for my efforts, my reward is getting to spend some quality time with the animals I love. They’re calming and I know that just by being around them and watching them, my blood pressure drops. They make me laugh, too! In the heat, they like to get a hose bath and, the way they vie for position in front of the hose and then dance in the stream of water is pretty funny. They’re very curious, give lots of kisses and love to get carrots. They don’t need to do much to lift my spirits and keep me moving.
