From The Editor

Just when I thought things were winding down in terms of the amount of information required for this month’s Beacon, we end up with 45 pages. And that’s a good thing as it goes to show there’s never a dull moment at NCYC! In addition to the usual great articles from the regulars, there are several nice write-ups mentioning this month’s Members of the Month and Good of the Anchor. Also, please make sure you get the information inside about the St. Patty’s Day party this Saturday. I know the Siwek ladies have been hard at work planning and organizing this great event and it’s sure to be a great dinner and evening. And I have to give a special mention to the two very hard working ladies on our Board – Kim Miedema and Diane French. Inside there’s 3 pages containing the names and pictures of all the new members from this year who joined after the 2013 roster was published. They both gathered the information and Kim (also our club photographer) organized the pictures and pages and sent them off to me. Thanks Ladies!

Enjoy your October Beacon and see you on the Island!

Greg Brigman NCYC Publications Director

It’s Haul-Out time! Alright, where did the time go? Seems like we just opened up the club a couple of weeks ago and here it is time to start thinking about closing her up for the winter ahead. We will have two weekends to shut things down. Please come out and lend a hand. It’ll make things easier and we’ll get things put away faster. We will be shutting down the water system October 19 th , our last work party for the season. Thank you in advance for your help. I’d like to thank all of the candidates for their commitment to NCYC and wish them luck in this year’s election. Our annual election will be held October 5 th followed by a special party planned by the Siwek family.

September was full of great events and thanks to everyone that helped and took part in them. A special thanks to Our First Mates for Labor Day, P/C Rick and Jill Romatz for the Kid’s Campout, Ron Latowski and P/C Tom McHugh for the Smoke On the Water cook-off and to our Fleet Captains, Greg and Yvonne Murray for once again, ( for the fourth time) hosted another successful rendezvous, held this time, at NCYC. We had a great, fun packed weekend with great friends. Hats off to Ed Romatz for his last and best attempt at a five point golf shot that won him “Tiger Ed” status for the next year. Shelley Vercnocke was a close second. Please congratulate these two individuals when you see them next. We also had the outdoor under the patio movie night and we were entertained by the cult blockbuster “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, a 1975 musical of sorts that was an amazing hit in the seventies but I failed to see the art in it. Another sign of my age, I suppose. Another good time with friends and with Kim Miedema, leading the crowd participation parts during the movie. Our rendezvous and other events are only as good as what you invest your time in as a member of NCYC. This year was priceless! Thank you for participating.

DATES TO REMEMBER : October 5 th General Membership Meeting @ 1:00 P.M.

We’ll see you at Haul-Out Commodore Don

I wish I knew who fast-forwarded Summer into Fall ! It seems like we just untied our lines at the Belle Maer Rendezvous … just had the Capri dinghy run and Sand Point Boat Club visit our Island … and now look up to see that the leaves on the Maple trees starting to turn colors?!! You have to admit though that we had a good time of it so far. As always, the Labor Day events were a blast. Excitement was in the air with the 2014 candidates sparring for their positions. Parlaying their ‘treats on the bar’ for votes on the ballot, we’re still enjoying the pretzels, tootsie-rolls and other goodies put forth by these fine candidates. On that note, continue to support their efforts both before AND after the election for it takes some fortitude to put

oneself before the membership in asking for a position in the running of this Club of ours. Continuing on … not to be put to pasture so easily, both Tom and Judy McHugh have shown their force is still to be reckoned with. Our newest PC Tom McHugh did a great job in hosting the Commodores’ Beer Bust, one of the tasks assumed by the most recent P/C. BEER … the nectar of the gods! Great job, Tom. Not to be left behind, our p/c (past/commodress) Judy McHugh has won the coveted NCYC Smoke on the Water award. Congratulations Judy!! The BBQ weekend is turning out to be a wonderful event with attendance packed in, awaiting their chance to savor the tasty offerings that were teasing our senses all day. Chili, Hot Dogs, Grilled Corn and specialty drinks leading up to dinner were the best. Lastly, whoever ordered the sun-soaked afternoon deserves credit that only added the icing on the cake for a great event. I was glad to see the Kid’s Day Campout go well as tents popped up like mushrooms on our Island. The younger set seemed to enjoy the activities set for them and the fishing competition showed us how big of fish are down there nibbling at our toes in the water. Both top-notch anglers Zach Fringer and Brendon Romatz lured awards on this activity and congratulations go to both of them for their skills. This Kids’ Program that we have at NCYC is something near and dear to my heart. I feel that it encourages family activity with clean and wholesome fun for everyone. It gives the kids a chance to make friends and mingle with each other while enjoying the Island and all that it has to offer. It shows our children that we care enough of how they enjoy NCYC that we set aside special events just for their entertainment. The rewards that they … and we … reap from this are incalculable. Attendance to some of the kid’s activities has been lean in recent times and part of it is the cycle of the membership of the Club. It will come back while we start to gain members with smaller children of ages that can participate in this program. This is where I put a ‘plug’ in for my needs next year. I’m looking for a Member … or even a Junior Member or a couple of them … to carry on the ‘Dream’ of on certain days watching an Island full of youngsters running, playing and having a good time.

,

We called the position Youth Director but it doesn’t have to be that formal. An Organizer may be a better word. A person that can put a few events together on maybe two days out of the whole season next year. The most it takes is a few phone calls to order necessities and some ‘helping hands’ for assistance. Mix in a bunch of kids for attendees and Voi La … we have a bowl of fun cooked up. Think about it…Let me know… Call me. I don’t want this Kids’ Program to go by the wayside. The most recent activity as of this writing was the NCYC Rendezvous. WATCH OUT … the FLEET’S IN !!! Wow is all I can say about this gathering of boats. Big hugs and a ‘job well-done’ goes out to Fleet Captains Greg and Yvonne Murray, as well as the whole Fleet Team, for their outstanding skills in bringing fun and good-times to us this season. Unless you have been in their position, you have no idea of what all it takes to bring these rendezvous’ together for us. Thanks again, you’se guys!! If I were making a speech of this, I would say that I’ve been a bit long-winded. I’ll stop at saying it’s getting too long … virtually … and I should be signing off. So, there’s plenty of more fun to be had at our beloved Club. Don’t be a stranger. Come on out and enjoy what we have planned! See you on the Island …

Let The Good Times Roll, V/C John Anderson

,

Election time for NCYC is now upon us. I hope everyone had a chance to listen to the candidates' speeches or read their bio's, and to speak to each candidate regarding their views and opinions with respect to the club's business. Make sure to cast your vote and to thank each of these members who stepped up to volunteer a great deal of their time over the next several years. A very busy September has come and gone. What a great month of activities we had at the island. Starting with Labor Day weekend festivities, Kid's campout, the Smoke off, Island rendezvous and the Commodore’s golf outing.

I would like to say a big "thank you" to all the weekend and week managers for another great job this year. Thank you to the First Mates and Ancient Mariners for your efforts and contributions. And thank you to the Board of Directors and all of the members who volunteered their time, talents, and efforts throughout this year. It is that time of year again. Time to begin preparations for preparing the club for the offseason. We need all of you to come out to the work parties on October 12 & 19, 2013. A large amount of work needs to be done winterize the clubhouse and put everything away for winter. It is an enjoyable time of the year and a lot of fun.

NOTES FROM CHAPLAIN ART BROOKS

Larry Gierlowski’ s mother, Marianne, passed away the middle of September. She had a good, long life passing at age 92. The Gierlowski’s have had a tough year, losing Larry’s brother suddenly and very recently. I have heard it said that “God will not give you more than you can handle” Please remember the family in your prayers.

Well, this is the time of the year to ready both the clubhouse, our boats and our minds for the Winter. As I am writing this, it is the first day of Fall and the outside temperature has dropped considerably. Checking the Farmer’s Almanac, the prediction is that we are in for a cold Winter. Hug someone close to you and ponder the words here. !!!

SOME THOUGHTS TO LIVE BY;

Life is too short to wake up with regrets, So love the people who treat you right. Forget about those who don’t. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. Nobody said that life would be easy;

They just promised it would most likely be worth it, So live, love, laugh and thank God for your blessings Make it a Great Day… After all, it’s yours to lose. God Bless

Members of the Month

The Flag and the Board of Directors are pleased to announce that Ian and Marie Blackburn have been named the Members of the Month of August 2013. Marie is the Treasurer of the First Mates and is very active in that role. Many times you have seen her with a bucket full of tickets to sell for various First Mates functions. She is always willing to help with whatever needs to be done. You can find her in the kitchen anytime there is a meal to prepare. Anytime there is outdoor cooking to be done, you will always see Ian right there with a spatula in hand. He walks the island and if he sees something to be done, he just does it without being asked. They both do many things to better the club without looking for recognition or a pat on the back. One example of this is the merry-go-round by the kid’s playground. They took their vacation time on the island to completely redo it, by replacing boards, sanding it completely down and repainting it. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a walk down by the playground and see what an awesome job they did. Welcome Ian and Marie to the Order of The Anchor.

Order of the Anchor

The Order of the Anchor is an award given to an individual or a couple who exemplify the goodwill and generosity of their time and expertise in standing out as unique members. This couple jumped in from the start this year and helped organize, deliver and prepare many of the years large luncheons , and dinners ,not only at North Channel but on our rendezvous trips to other ports. Having joined NCYC in 2009, they quickly became involved in many of the club functions and put the “T” in teamwork. The 2013 Board of Directors have unanimously nominated Steve and Diane Marten as co-members of the month. Congratulations to you two!

Approval of Agenda All MOTION: Moved by R/C Brian McEvoy and seconded by Chuck Stroh to approve the agenda. Motion Carried All MOTION: Moved by Diane French and seconded by P/C Hugh Vestal to approve the July 9, 2013 Board Meeting Minutes. Motion Carried Commodore, Don Vanover Where did the time go? Here we are going into Sept. We've had a great year at the club, lots of activities going on, we've had a lot of incoming rendezvous. The challenges have been met by North Channel, our bank accounts are looking pretty good as a result of the incoming rendezvous and the docking fees. It's been a great year and I want to thank the Board of Directors for all your hard work it's been fantastic, made my job easy and made John and Brian's easy as well. Let's keep up the good work, keep our membership informed and finish out a great year. Approval of Meeting Minutes Commodore’s Comments

Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, John Anderson I want to say Thank You to each and every one of you, a truly great job you all have been doing this year. Our increase in membership shows it. The smiles on the faces of our members show it. What I would like to encourage right now is to stand up and back the candidates that are putting forth their efforts to run for our club. It's important to us, important to them, give them a pat on the back, give them some advice if they choose to listen to you. Let's have a good election. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Brian McEvoy Well, we're in the second half of the year. Got a lot of good weekends left, got a lot of nice activities coming up. Renee and I are going to try our best to enjoy as many weekends as possible the rest of this year. Membership, new members is way up which is a great thing but also pose some problems that we have to watch for that we thought was coming and that is the times when the outer harbor or the entire marina is full. We recently had a situation where members had to go out to guest wells when they came in late on Saturday. I think we have to look at our guest policy and define it, make sure all the members know it and in particular OD's. Guest, Brian Michel Brian brought a hand out showing how many work hours have been assigned to each weekend OD. He wanted to bring to the Board's attention the work schedule and primarily the work hours. Some weekends are well over loaded with hours and others are slighted. Example: One weekend had 192 scheduled working hours and another only had 88. The point being the work schedule should be set according to how many hours each member has to work rather than when each member wants to work. The work schedule has fallen into the members hands, "I want to work with my friend". The policy is if you can't work your weekend, you have to find someone to take your place. Discussion followed. Weekend Scheduling Policy P/C John Dickson presented the list of proposed candidates nominated for the 2013 election by the Nominating Committee of P/C John Dickson-Chair, P/C Gary Barnard, P/C Scott Bell, P/C Bill Hendricks and Al Durand-past Board of Director. Observation: When it comes to Rear Commodore there are only so many people who qualify because you have to be a previous Board member. When we started listing names we came down to about 27-28 people and probably 2/3 of those people do not have the time or desire to step into the position. So it is important to stress upon the mew members to get involved. Nominating Committee Report Nominating Committee Chairman, P/C John Dickson

Financial Report Treasurer, Chuck Stroh Full report was e-mailed to all the officers. Showing comparison of where we stand today and at the same time last year. We are ahead of where we were last year at this time. MOTION: Moved by V/C John Anderson and seconded by Greg Brigman to approve the Financial Report. Motion Carried P/C Tom McHugh August 5th was the ABYA meeting at Conger Bay. Our Board gave approval to use our finnrunner to transport everyone back and forth. It was very much appreciated. Not the greatest day but it was a good time. ABYA was very appreciative to have their biggest fund raiser of the year for them at NCYC on May 31st this year. March 7-8-9, 2014 will be the Spring Midland trip again, more info to follow. The Christmas Dinner Dance will be $67.50 per person the second weekend of December, more info to follow as well. In the meeting it was brought up that Canada wants to put a nuclear waste plant on Lake Huron, sure to be more on that and for sure we will want our voices heard. Next meeting September 9 at North Channel. It is the Great Lakes Cruising Club meeting but it will be at NCYC. Make a reservation, everyone welcome, dinner at 6:00. Received a reciprocal card from Ottawa River Yacht Club. Received thank you from Bernie Lapko for the flowers sent in memory of her husband, George. Received a letter from Mark Snethkamp concerning their dog requesting a compromise. They have a dog stroller that they use at DYC. They would be willing to use it at NCYC also to transport the dog to and from the dog run. The rest of the time the dog would remain on the boat. The Snethkamps will take full responsibility and sign whatever is needed to take full responsibility. ABYA Report Correspondence All

MOTION: Moved by P/C Hugh Vestal and seconded by V/C John Anderson to allow the Snethkamp's dog Jake back on the island only if they comply with the usage of the dog carriage to and from the dog run, otherwise the dog is not to step foot on the island. In addition they must sign legal papers of indemnity releasing NCYC of any responsibility. If there are anymore incidents with this dog, we will accept their resignation. Motion Carried Received letter from Bill Szkodzinski concerning Guest Policy at NCYC. Concerned there are guest taking advantage of the club and wanted to bring it to the Board's attention. He has observed guest disposing of their garbage on our island and docking in the East Harbor leaving no room for our own members. Much discussion followed. Even though we have a list of rules on the back of the docking slips, it was decided to have a hand out sheet of "Guest Rules" to be given to guest as they pay for dockage and to better educate the weekend OD. Received a letter from P/C Jim Whyard concerning the relocation of the Past Commodores pictures. He is requesting to move the Directors recognition frames to the wall the P/C's were moved to and continue the P/C's pictures down the same hallway as the existing P/Cs and keep them all in succession and possibly even come up with a name for the hallway, ie; "Hallway of History", "Historical Hallway", "Commodores Corridor" just to name a few. The pictures were moved to that spot because it was an easy move and didn't have to move all the Directors frames. No Disrespected was intended. The Board of Directors had no objection to the relocation but did suggest that perhaps P/C Whyard could get the other P/Cs to take care of that project. Activities – Kim Miedema Kim apologized for past missing reports, brought up to date everything that has been turned into her so far. Total monies collected for Activities as of July 31, 2013 is $6,161. It was agreed upon earlier that not every weekend would have a paying activity. So there was no charge for Field Day or the Dry Dingy Poker Run, and everybody had a blast. Golf Outing will be at Oak Ridge at I-94 & 26 Mile Road on the Marsh course and a bus has been hired to transport golfers from the mainland parking lot to and from the course. I. CURRENT BUSINESS  Harbor & Grounds – Don Reiss No Report. Don Reiss is managing the clubhouse and unable to attend. Commodore commented on how nice the grounds look. Membership – Bob Carnaghi As of today Leave of Absence is 8, Resignations are 4, membership is 276 but we have a few more new members to approve tonight so that number will increase very shortly. 7 more new Members and 1 Junior member were approved at tonight's meeting.   Club House – Rich Goodman No Report due to Rich Goodman's absence. 

Publications – Greg Brigman I want to thank our brand new members that we just approved tonight Mike & Jackie Pilarowski for a full page ad in the roaster.

Secretary – Diane French I have nothing to report.

 Supplies – Hugh Vestal Everybody loves the Haagen Dazs ice cream but we are not making any profit. Our ice cream pricing will stay the same for this year but next year we will have to have an increase. Still trying to locate syrup for Diet Vernors. We need to pay attention when we have incoming rendezvous and incoming parties to move the register to Level 2 party prices. We are getting close to the end of the year, I am keeping a close eye on the inventory. That last party there may be a few people disappointed that we are out of their favorites but I'm trying to keep the winter inventory down. Transportation – Pat Carroll P/C Tom McHugh gave short report on behalf of Pat Carroll's absence. Just changed the oil in all 3 finns. Also had to do some work on finn #2. It had a broken bolt that held the alternator and also the engine mount. It was giving a bad vibration but it has been fixed. Fleet Captain – Greg Murray No Report - Out purchasing for this weekend's rendezvous at Belle Maer. Commodore Vanover stated there are about 40 people signed up for the Rendezvous. We were hoping more of the members that keep their boats at Belle Maer would have signed up. 1. Junior Membership Policy The By-Law Committee consisting of Chair person, Secretary Diane French, Commodore Don Vanover, P/C Harley Burris, Bob Carnaghi, Greg Criner, Brian Michel, and Larry Malik had a meeting and after much discussion came up with the following proposal to present to the Flag and Board of Directors for approval to go on the ballot this year. Proposed Change:

Junior membership shall be available to the immediate family of current members in good standing between the ages of 18 and 30 years of age. Junior members shall enjoy limited privileges or extension of age limits of membership as determined by the Board of Directors, however, they shall not hold office or vote. Junior members up to age 25 will be credited 1/7 of initiation per year if they full fill their work requirements as stated in Club Policies. At age 25-30 Junior members, in good standing, may join at anytime. The Committee also recommended after the age of 25 the work hours be increased to the same as a regular boating member, 16 regular and 4 work party. After the age of 25 if they do not work their full hours they would be charged for them. The Junior members will NOT be able to bring a boat to the island until after the age of 25 even then no boat on party weekends, after the age of 25 they will be required to pay dockage. That will have to go to the Policy and Procedures Committee. Brian Michel is also on that board and said he will present this to that committee. MOTION: Moved by P/C Hugh Vestal, seconded by Greg Brigman to approve the proposed changes for the Junior membership as presented by the By-Law Committee. Motion Carried Election/Campaign Policy Last year there was a ban on campaign banners except for goodies on the bar. This year it will be allowed with restrictions: You must wait until after the General Membership meeting before you can place a single item in the clubhouse, no taping things to the paneling, no writing or drawing on other candidates posting. It has created a fun atmosphere in the clubhouse in the past. So let's have fun again. Member of the Month Don Reiss wrote a note read by Diane French suggesting Ian Blackburn & Marie Pepin as Members of the Month. They have been spending a lot of time on the island this year. and working on something for NCYC the entire time. They have restored the "Marry-go- Round", replaced boards, sanded, primed and repainted. Diane also read a letter from Marie Pepin wishing to donate extra work hours that she & Ian worked to Kathleen McKeown. Commodore Vanover on behalf of Greg & Yvonne Murray would also like to nominate Steve & Diane Marten. Besides working and cooking for opening weekend, they have been doing a lot for the rendezvous, hauling, setting-up, delivering, cooking. It's ironic that they were both nominated by different people and they are also close friends. The Board decided there is no reason we cannot have two couples at the same time. III. NEW BUSINESS

All policy decisions for the Guest room assignments are at the discretion of the O.D. 1) Weekend workers 2) Members without boats on the island 3) Any member for emergency use Friday night dinners - Any club that we are in reciprocity with is welcome. Entry fee is $10 per person. Haven't had very many people sign up so far. Kim Miedema asked how much the fees are on our credit card machine. Club House – Rich Goodman Mary and I wish we could be with you celebrating this holiday weekend, but family obligations require us to be out of town. Wow, it’s already September, another summer is flying past. Our clubhouse has served us well this summer. Bar sales have been brisk, our kitchen has been busy, new fans have helped cool us during those hot days, and the rooms upstairs were often full. Early in the season many members helped with major renovations in the manager’s apartment. Hope you have had a chance to peek in and look. Maintenance and upgrades are on going in the clubhouse so we can remain the showplace of the lake. Your suggestions are very helpful as we continue the work of our building. Too soon it will be time to prepare for another Michigan winter. As usual we will need all hands I. CURRENT BUSINESS  
