From the Editor… As we enter into March, it seams that Old Man Winter won’t give up as he hits us with another winter storm on March 12, 2014. I’m sure for all of us, Spring can’t get here soon enough! It sure has been cold – record cold! This has also caused record ice coverage on the Great Lakes. A recent TV Report by CNBC’s Scott Cohn was broadcasted aboard the USCGC Hollyhock cruising the St. Clair River near Port Huron, Michigan on February 23 rd . The Hollyhock is 1 of 9 Icebreakers the USCG has in their Great Lakes Fleet. This monster ship is 225’ long with 50 crew members to ensure 20 million tons of cargo keeps moving through the Great Lakes shipping routes. Cohn reports, “the Great Lakes are 90% covered with ice. The record was set in 1979 with 95% ice coverage over the Great

Lakes.” Use the below link for the whole story: http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?video=3000248088

Please read inside for highlights on upcoming news such as, Calendar of Events, Spring Fashion Show, Rendezvous', and ABYA Sponsored Events.

Thank you for reading & wishing you all the best.

Brent Malik Director, Publications

“If there’s no Wind…Row”

Another day closer to ‘Launch’ and all that it brings. Pass the boat wax and turn up the heat! After that Polar Vortex, I for one, am ready for sunny skies and balmy breezes. Soon enough and we’ll be sippin’ a cold beverage in the shade at our Island. Me and my First Mate are making ready for the upcoming ABYA Midland rendezvous. It’s always a good time at this event and it is great to see the folks from all the different clubs in our area. As Rear Commodore of ABYA, P/C Rick and Jill Romatz are hosting this fund-raising event and you can be sure that a good time will be had by all. If you’re not attending this year, maybe consider it next year to get out and meet a bunch of fun-loving folks.

This month also brings the Blessing of the Fleet at Mariner’s Church in Detroit. Our Chaplain Art Brooks and Officers from NCYC attend this ceremony traditionally to have our NCYC club burgee, the one that is flown atop our cupola, blessed along with other burgees brought there by Merchant companies, Yacht clubs and boating groups from around the region. A very interesting event steeped in history and tradition. The business of the Club goes on and I have to admire the interest, dedication and concern that these Officers and Directors that you have elected to represent NCYC, bring to the table. The whole focus of what we do is for the betterment and success of North Channel with an eye looking forward to our progress into the future. I just want to say how proud I am of these folks and the pleasure that I have in working with every one of them. I’m hoping that getting the highlights of our Board meetings out to you is proving interesting and useful. My thoughts were to have the important points of Club business be made available to everyone right away as it happened. In the past, information was available one or two months after it occurred. Much too long if an issue was time-sensitive. I’m having Brent Malik, our Publications Director, place the 2014 Events Calendar in the March Beacon. Please take a look at it and hopefully make plans on attending the functions during the season. The calendar is by no means is complete. I’m looking forward to adding some more events as we move closer to the summer. If, by chance, you have some interest in hosting an event please let me know. To date, I’m still lacking someone interested in organizing an event or two with the Youth of our Club in mind. I feel that this is important not only to our children that we bring to the Island with us, but to the Club itself. We try to promote Youth involvement at North Channel but at the same time we have to provide them the interest to keep them returning.

Soon the ice on the channel will be melted and gone. Hopefully in its’ wake it will leave our docks and pilings intact. Next month work parties are on the agenda and getting our Grand Ol’ Lady back in shape for the summer will be upon us. Soon, my friends ….

Let The Good Times Roll,

John Anderson NCYC Commodore 2014

The cold weather and snowfall is still with us entering into the month of March. I say it is about time for a bit of a warm up. I am definitely looking forward to spring, warmer weather, and the launching of boats to begin the much anticipated boating season. Although, we have much to do first, beginning with the Midland Rendezvous March 7-9, then the Blessing of the Fleet at Mariners’ Church also on March 9, followed by the elite brigade and work parties in April and May. Make sure you come out and lend a hand; it is hard work but very enjoyable working side by side with fellow members.

Renee and I recently attended the Detroit Boat Show, it was very nice to walk around Cobo Center looking at all the boats and watercraft in anticipation of the upcoming boating season. We even ran into a bunch of NCYC members at the Tiki Bar. Make sure to tell all your friends and fellow boaters of our current, limited time only reduced initiation fees of $750 until May 1st. Let’s see if we can fill out our membership roster and ease the financial and work burden of the existing members. The Fist Mates 2014 Fashion Show “Fashions for Generations” is fast approaching. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 th at Palazzo Grande on Van Dyke in Shelby, MI. Please support this event. Our First Mates work very hard to put on this event and would appreciate your attendance and support.

V/C Brian McEvoy

Will winter ever quit  ? Since the ground hog saw his shadow I guess we’re not done for many more weeks. I keep my focus by remembering that each day brings us one day closer to boat launch, deeper water and “here we go again”, it can’t come fast enough for me  . Although I’m not bowling myself, I go each moth to support Sandi and her team and spend time with my NCYC family. Even if you don’t bowl I recommend that you come to the alley and say hi. It’ll put a smile on your face and we would love to see you!! I attended the Detroit Boat show as a kind of therapy. Although it’s not the grand event it once was for larger Great Lakes boats, it still gets the ”I want spring” juices flowing and you can always find something new to spend money on for your boat.

I know I did. While at the show you can never get through the building without seeing several of our NCYC members doing the same. I do want to give a special thank you to Pete and Pam Poirier. Pete and Pam are at the show every year representing their home port of Jefferson Beach Marina. However, they use that platform and opportunity to promote NCYC to a very large audience. As you watch the video that Peter produced it has NCYC allover it along with faces of several of our members and their boats. They love to share the NCYC experience with any one they can. Thank you Pete and Pam! The 2014 First Mates fashion show is scheduled for 4-26-2014. Ladies please be sure to support them by coming to this fun event and bringing 20 of your closest family and friends. It’s a great winter break and opportunity to see your NCYC family. The Commodore continues to firm up the 2014 calendar, please keep an eye on it as it’s published. Let’s be supportive of those who work so hard to put on these events for our membership. So mark your calendars with the ‘save the dates’ for those activities and events. If you would like to see something that is not on the list of events please speak up and let your Activities Director know.

I continue looking forward to the countdown to the 2014 launch date (37 days), hot sun, deep water and the sound of the bell.

R/C Chuck Stroh

AMessage From Chaplain Art Brooks…

Well, this month finds the membership in good shape. We have not received any reports of any sick or deceased members. This is surprising realizing the size membership we have.

Below is a prayer that we all can use in our daily lives.

Daily Journey Prayer

Dear Lord….

In the midst of solitude, I come to You in prayer to express my GRATITUDE for the blessings that You share. You’re ready with forgiveness, You love without reserve, You richly bless my life With more than I deserve. You give me faithful GUIDANCE Through the journey of my day, And cover me with GRACE You freely give away.

Please, Lord, fill my heart with true HUMILITY, As You help me live a life of PEACE and charity.

Commodore’s Comments:

Commodore, John Anderson

Thank you everyone for your attendance this evening. Between work, our private lives and the weather these days, it's a wonder we have time for anything else. But we're here and taking care of the business of our Club. We will see the fruits of our labor soon and it will make it all worth our effort. I want to thank everyone that attended the Commodore's Ball. A lot of you pitched in and helped with things. Most importantly, I hope that you all enjoyed yourselves there. It was you being there that made it the good time that it was for me. It's a slow time of the year right now. Not much activity going on. I'm using this time now for planning and setting up for the summer ahead of us. Once things start for the season with the Club, there will only be time for doing. The planning and paperwork need to be done now. I have to put a 'plug' in for ABA and our PC Rick Romatz who's Rear Commodore for that organization. PC Rick is organizing this Spring Rendezvous for ABYA at Midland this year. If at all possible, I hope that you can attend this event and give Rick the support that he needs to pull this off . NCYC has always been a leader in attending the Spring Rendezvous for them and I hope that we can continue in this tradition.

Vice-Commodore’s Comments:

Vice Commodore, Brian McEvoy

I am happy that we are getting closer to warm weather. This is an important meeting because we are going to approve our committee members. These people are the behind the scenes people that help us do our jobs. Thanks to John for a wonderful ball and a great time at the Commodores Ball. I look forward to a great summer.

Rear-Commodore’s Comments:

Rear Commodore, Chuck Stroh

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 3 of 10

Although RC Chuck Stroh was unable to attend our Board Meeting, he did send this message to the Board through Commodore John Anderson.

I would like you to speak for me at the RC comments portion of the Board Meeting. Please thank all of the members that are showing their true NCYC DNA of volunteerism and sweat equity by jumping into the board spots and taking on week managers and weekend OD duties. I personally thank them and the entire club membership does as well, I am sure. Also, please ask the board to keep in mind how truly fantastic NCYC was treated on the Toledo Club Crawl last fall. That if we can live up to their standards, we will be making a very strong name for our club and make it standout even more as the best club on the lakes. Please think of this when deciding to bring other clubs to NCYC.

Financial Report:

Treasurer, Frank Corcoran

Treasurer, Frank Corcoran, discussed the Profit and Loss reports detail for the month of January 2014. The report showed a summary by class or function. January 2014 net income was $4,089. This included income from the Commodore Ball, winter storage in parking lot, and paver brick sales. The expenses included expenses from the Commodore Ball, utilities, insurance payments and interest expense for the loans. RC Chuck Stroh did a great job of getting the files together. RC Chuck and Frank spent some time cleaning up the quick book files. Previously the Club activity was reported on Quick Books and Excel, going forward the activity will only be reported using Quick Books. New reports by class will be sent out to the directors in March using the Quick Book format. A discussion was held on how to communicate expenses to Frank. Going forward, Frank requested that all receipts be sent electronically. This will cut down on paperwork and make it easier to track by category. Frank provided an overview of the decrease in profitability of the bar from 2012 to 2013 and highlighted some key factors. Following discussion, the Board required additional analysis be provided at the April meeting.

Motion: Moved by PC Hugh Vestal to approve the financial report. Seconded by Brent Malik.

Motion Carried

ABYA Report:

P/C Don Vanover

The last meeting was held at Captain Jacks on February 3, 2014. Please note that the ABYA meetings are not closed meetings, anyone can attend. The guest speaker was John Kasinski, MSO (Marine Safety Officer) of the Macomb County Sheriff Reserve Association. They will be having a fund raiser on May 13, 2014. There are only 2 paid staff members in this organization,

NCYC Regular Meeting Minutes Page 4 of 10

with hundreds of non-paid volunteers. The volunteers are required to pay for their own uniforms, life jackets and other equipment they may need. Their fund raisers are important to help these volunteers to pay for the supplies that are needed. Their main focus this year will be watch for drunk drivers on the water. The alcohol limit has been lowered from 1 to .08 this year, the same as driving a car. They urge all boaters to have a safety sticker on their boats. They indicated that they will not stop a boat that has the sticker. This is for the sheriff department only and does not include the Coast Guard. The Federal Government gave a $850 grant to this association for a new boat. There are still tickets available for the Midland Rendezvous. Please support Rick Romatz and attend this event.

Correspondence:

A letter was received from the First Mates asking for a donation for their Fashion Show. The board has donated in the past.

Motion: Moved by Don Reiss to send the First Mates a donation of $500 for their Fashion Show. Seconded by Randy Pagel.

Motion Carried.

They will have a dinghy cruise on Saturday, entertainment on Saturday night as well as a dinner on Saturday and a breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. All NCYC members are invited to these events. There will be a charge for dinner and breakfast.

Motion: Moved by VC Brian McEvoy to approve Great Lakes Cruising Club to come to NCYC on August 22nd & 23rd with a maximum of 20 boats. Seconded by Don Reiss.

Motion Carried.

Jefferson Yacht Club wanted to come to NCYC on August 15th/17th. They will have about 20 - 25 boats.
