Transformers to China ABB has won an order worth around $140 million to deliver transformers to the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) for a high-voltage power corridor that will strengthen the Chinese electricity network and help meet rising demand in the Shandong coastal region.

Each converter transformer is extremely large, weighing over 500 tonnes. This presents challenges that will be 1,700 kilometres of power, control, instrumentation and telecommunica- tions cable for the Usan FPSO. Rated from 1 kV up to 30 kV, the low voltage and medium voltage power cables are compliant with the latest international standards. Nexans will also provide cables with different insulation types (ERP or XLPE)

Nexans has received a €7 million order from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to manufacture and supply the topside power, control, instrumentation and telecommunications cables for the FPSO (floating production storage and offloading) vessel currently under construction for the Usan deepwater oilfield, off the coast of Nigeria. A sales partnership contract for a second Uhing agency in India, LMI India (P) Ltd, came into effect on 1 st January 2009. “The Indian market is developing fast,” explained Uhing’s head of marketing, Wolfgang Weber. Following a recommendation, Weber met Mohan Pandit – owner of LMI India (P) Ltd – at the Wire & Cable Fair at Mumbai in November 2008. India’s Unitech Wireless selects Alcatel-Lucent

Nexans has been awarded a €12 million contract by the Norwegian groups StatoilHydro ASA and Statkraft for the supply of 81km of infield cables and equipment for the Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm. This major contract follows a €24 million contract awarded in 2008 for the power export cables for the same wind farm project, located around 20km offshore from the north Norfolk coastal town of Sheringham, England. The infield cable contract comprises the design, manufacture and supply of 81km of 36kV XLPE sub- marine power cable, including 3x1x185mm 2 and 3x1x400mm 2 designs. They are due for delivery from Nexans’ submarine cable factory in Halden, Norway in June 2010 and will incorporate optical fibres manufactured at Nexans’ factory in Rognan, Norway. Total generation capacity will be 315 MW and in an average year approximately 1.1TWh of power will be exported to the mainland by the two submarine power cables that will connect to onshore export cables. Completion and commissioning of the wind farm is scheduled for the third quarter of 2011. Madem establishes an ecological park

Madem was founded in March of 1949 in the city of Bento Gonçalves, Brazil. Initially Madem manufactured wine barrels, but in 1971 it began production of wood packaging, pallets, and reels dedicated to carrying wire and cable. In 1975, the Rio Negro plant was opened to manufacture wood reels. Since the 1970s, with the launch of the Rio Negro operation, the Madem Group has been committed to sustainable development and the preservation of the environment. Firm believers in environmental responsibility and sustainable development, Madem was the first company in the region, and third in the state of Paraná, to attain quality management system ISO 9002 (in 1996) and ISO 14000 for environmental management in 2000. Today, the company still believes in ‘Going Green’ and recently demonstrated this commitment to the environment by acquiring a large tract of forest beside its manufacturing plant. The 91,000m 2 tract of pine forest within the Paraná Pine forest shelters hundreds of species of flora and fauna, making the area very interesting from a conservation perspective. The aim of the Madem park is to create a leisure and recreation space to enrich the quality of life of its visitors, to support the conservation and planting of native tree species, and to sustain a permanent home for the local fauna. It will also help develop environmental awareness through the proper use of the community’s special environmental qualities. The Madem Eco Park has a 3,000m trail and suspension bridge, and will be open to the public with a permit from the Agriculture and Environment Secretary.

Single largest order for HTS

By replacing copper cables with high-capacity superconductor cables in cities using existing underground tunnels and ductwork, utilities can avoid digging up city streets while also relieving grid congestion. This project builds on the success of Korea’s Development of Advanced Power Systems by Applied Super- conductivity technologies (DAPAS) programme, which has provided more than $100 million in funding for the development and commercialisation of superconductor systems. In 2006, LS Cable and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) successfully tested a 30-metre, 22.9kV superconductor cable. In 2007, LS Cable and KERI completed testing a 100-metre, 22.9 kV superconductor cable system.

American Superconductor Corporation has announced that LS Cable has ordered 80,000 metres (50 miles) of 344 superconductors, AMSC’s proprietary brand of second generation (2G) high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire. LS Cable will utilise the wire to manufacture a 22.9kV cable system that it will install in Korea Electric Power Corporation’s (KEPCO) commercial power delivery network near the city of Seoul in 2010. This is believed to be the single largest commercial order for 2G HTS wire in the world. Under the terms of the contract, AMSC will deliver the wire to LS Cable by the end of 2009. LS Cable will then strand the wire into a superconductor cable system capable of carrying 50 megawatts of power. A power cable made with HTS wire can conduct up to ten times the amount of power of the same diameter cable made with copper wire.

IWMA conferences

The IWMA is organising a one-day conference on Monday, 12 th October 2009, the eve of the wire Southeast Asia exhibition. “Latest wire technology” will take place at the Bangkok International Exhibition Centre (BITEC), the venue for the wire exhibition. Messe Düsseldorf Asia, organiser of wire Southeast Asia 2009, is sponsoring the conference. A number of exhibiting companies will take up the opportunity to present their latest developments, including the influential Institute of Spring Technology (IST). Mark Hayes from the IST is a well known and award winning speaker at wire conferences and will present a paper titled “Quality requirements for spring wire.” The paper will set the scene for the Spring Manufacturing Technology training course, to be run by Mark Hayes, on 13 th October in the same venue. The next major event will be the biennial conference jointly organised by the Wire Association International (WAI), Associazione Costruttori Italiani Macchine Per Filo (ACIMAF), Comité Européen de la Tréfilerie (CET) and the IWMA, taking place at the WOW Hotel and Convention Center in Istanbul on 2 nd and 3 rd November 2009. A provisional timetable for the conference on 2 nd November 2009 features two concurrent ferrous and non-ferrous sessions with simultaneous Turkish and English translation and, subject to demand, Russian. A tabletop exhibit area will be situated close to the conference rooms and on 3 rd November optional plant tours will be available. This year the family firm of Medek & Schörner – a leader in cable printing machines and optical fibre processing lines – celebrates the 80 th anniversary of its founding by Josef Medek and Gustav Schörner. Originally a precision engineering workshop, the company began the manufacture of machines for the marking of cables, wires, pipes and continuously extruded products in the 1950s. The erection of a production facility at Grossebersdorf in 1989, equipped with the very latest machine tools, went hand in hand with a focus on research and development and a special emphasis on complex electronic controls. The announcement, on 17 th April, that Nokia Siemens had again recorded an operating loss – of $97.2 million in the second quarter – was generally reported with a qualifier: this result was a 387% improvement over the Finnish-German company’s first-quarter 2008 results. This indication of the relative health of Nokia Siemens had been preceded, a few days earlier, by an even more important piece of information. Writing from Berlin in the International Herald Tribune , Kevin J O’Brien began with a question: Which two European companies run the biggest wireless networks in the world, with a combined 355 million customers? “If you are thinking of the top mobile operators – Vodafone, Telefónica, T-Mobile, or Orange – you would be wrong,” Mr O’Brien told his readers. The right answer: Ericsson, of Sweden, and Nokia Siemens Networks. (“Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Are Managing Just Fine,” 13 th April). His assertion would be hard to refute. Over the past six years, these wireless equipment makers have become two of the largest mobile network operators in the world as telephone companies hire them to manage the flow of voice, text, and data among their subscribers. According to the Tribune , mobile operators are not only sharing base stations and other hardware to save money, as Vodafone and Telefónica agreed to do for their European networks in March. They are also increasing their reliance on Ericsson and Nokia Siemens to operate their networks. In Britain alone, Ericsson manages significant parts, if not all, of the networks of 3, T-Mobile and O 2 . In March, Ericsson added Vodafone, its fourth mobile operator client in Britain. On the same day, Nokia Siemens said it had been hired by Orange, the mobile unit of France Télécom, to manage its British network. Mr O’Brien wrote, “The business of running and maintaining networks is becoming a significant source of revenue for the two companies. Ericsson, the world’s largest maker of network gear, generated $1.7 billion from managing networks last year, up 17% from a year earlier. That represents 7% of the company’s total revenue. Nokia Siemens does not disclose its revenue from network outsourcing.” According to industry executives, mobile operators ✆ ✆ in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East are doing most of the outsourcing to this point. American companies have taken a go-slow approach, farming out the operations of only a few services, like text messaging or prepaid billing. But, one analyst told the International Herald Tribune , “The outsourcing of network management is definitely a growing trend. It will absolutely be a global phenomenon.” Two ambitious players are out ahead in a growing trend: the outsourcing of network management

“We have observed a movement towards backhaul as a managed service,” said ABI’s Ms Manjaro. “This enables mobile operators to focus on their core business while guaranteeing a backhaul capacity matched to their changing traffic demands.” With telecom demand surging, Kenya promotes – and safeguards – its lines of communication The government of Kenya is con- sidering measures that would bring down the price of computer hardware, facilitating Internet access in advance of the mid-year commissioning of an undersea high-speed fibre optic cable. The $130 million East African Marine Cable, which will link Mombasa, on the coast of Kenya, with Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, is in an area menaced by sea pirates. In March, a government official said the projected route of the cable had been shifted some 125 miles as a safety precaution. But Kenya’s Information and Communications Minister Samuel Poghisio said in a statement 16 th April that the 3,100-mile cable was on schedule for completion in June. This year’s government budget includes an item that would make the benefits of computer technology available to more Kenyans. Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta said, “The [stimulus package] will also enable telecommunication companies to expand across the country and make their services more affordable.” The number of mobile phone subscribers in Kenya grew by 1.7 million in the fourth quarter of last year, according to the Communication Commission. Official data also indicate that total subscribers grew from 11.3 million in 2007 to 16.2 million in 2008. As an example of of the new communications emphasis, Telkom Kenya has launched a service that will enable organisations to exchange data more securely among sites almost anywhere in Kenya. As reported in the Nairobi Standard (18 th April), an execu- tive of the firm said Orange Business Services is offering a one-stop communication package – a virtual private network – that includes mobile and fixed phone, network systems, video services, and data solutions on one platform. Telkom Kenya is the sole provider of landline phone services in the country.

Wireless backhaul expansion continues unabated, is even seen as intensifying

The advent of 4G challenges US carriers to solve the last-generation lag With its beguiling touch screen, computer-like display, and Wi-Fi capa- bility, the iPhone from Apple was a smash hit with customers even before its introduction, in June 2007. And the phone retains its hold on a dedicated band of owners. But, for many frustrated users in cities across the US, the powerful device is hobbled by inconsistent service from the nation’s wireless operators. Writing in the New York Times , Matt Richtel reported that iPhone owners complain of continual ‘hiccups’, particularly in certain cities. He recounted the experience of a visitor to New York from San Francisco, whose iPhone “couldn’t hang on to the network” in Manhattan. This made it difficult even to use the map function to get directions, and the California resident rated the coverage far inferior to what he receives at home. (“3G Phones Exposing Networks’ Last-Gen Technology,” 14 th March). This customer had upgraded in January from a second-generation (2G) iPhone to the 3G version. And here, according to Mr Richtel, is the locus of the problem. It also foreshadows the broader technical challenges awaiting all carriers as they move to the higher-speed networks – both 3G and, soon, 4G. Industry observers consulted by the Times fault the ‘complex quilt’ of the nation’s wireless networks. Mr Richtel wrote, “The major mobile carriers have spent tens of billions of dollars on new voice and data networks that they advertise as superfast wireless express lanes. But analysts say these upgrades present major engineering challenges, and the networks often underperform.” While acknowledging some disappointment on the part of some users, AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the US, claims that improvements in its network provide an example of ‘extraordinary’ recent advances in wireless service achieved by the industry. But the company is doing more. On 10 th March, it announced plans to invest some $11 billion this year to expand and improve its wireless and broadband networks.

Worldwide revenues from backhaul leasing are expected to double over the ensuing 30 months, according to a study published 15 th April by ABI Research. The global-connectivity research and advisory firm expects the growth curve even to accelerate after 2012, for a five-fold revenue increase between 2009 and 2014. A backhaul network includes the lines that connect a provider’s towers or cell sites to one or more cellular telephone switching offices, long-distance providers, or a public switched telephone network. According to ABI Research senior analyst Nadine Manjaro, the main driver of this powerful performance will be the effort by mobile operators to prepare for an upgrade to LTE (long term evolution). “Operators might not deploy LTE immediately,” she said. “But they know that, before they do, they’ll have to upgrade their backhaul capacity.” Describing backhaul as a potential bottleneck to a satisfactory 3G experience, ABI Research expects wireless network traffic to surge as iPhone and other phone-media- Internet devices become the norm, and laptop PC card usage increases. Ms Manjaro noted that AT&T Mobility, the service provider for the iPhone, “has found that one iPhone user typically generates as much data traffic as 30 basic-feature phone users.” Another indicator of higher revenues from backhaul leasing is the growing capital expenditure on microwave backhaul, which ABI Research sees as exceeding $8.5 billion in 2009. The market opportunities generated by this growth in backhaul are spread around the backhaul equipment vendors and fixed line operators. In the company’s view, some backhaul infrastructure vendors (Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, and Nokia Siemens Network, among them) will benefit from the operators’ strong interest in Carrier Ethernet solutions. Major microwave equipment vendors, like Dragon Wave and Harris Stratex, will also benefit from increased microwave adoption. And fixed-line operators – such as BT, Embarq, AT&T, and Verizon Communications – will develop new revenue streams by providing leased backhaul services. Even the business models for backhaul are in flux.

Acquisition of Nortel’s carrier unit would strengthen the Finnish com- pany’s position in the lucrative US market. Nokia Siemens Networks is in fourth place behind Alcatel-Lucent, Nortel, and Ericsson in the North American telecom equipment market. Huawei, the largest telecommuni- ✆ ✆ cations equipment supplier in China, posted on 22 nd April, results for 2008 showing a 20% rise in net profit to $1.15 billion on revenues up 43%, and an operating margin that rose three points to 13%. But, despite soaring sales, a five-fold increase in finance costs – to $971 million, up from $199 million in 2007 – took the bloom off the impressive results. The annual report confirmed that privately-held Huawei made $18.3 billion in sales last year, up from $12.84 billion in 2007.

It also said the company had signed $23.3 billion in contracts and expects to increase that to $30 billion in 2009. As noted on telecomasia.net , this ‘turbo-charged growth’ is closing the distance between Huawei and the world’s biggest telecom equipment vendors. Cisco Systems, of the US, made $39 billion in sales in 2008, up from $34.9 billion in sales in 2007. Its first-quarter gross operating margin was 20.5%. Ericsson, of Sweden, posted $24.4 billion in sales in 2008, up 11.3% from 2007. Huawei said it had shipped more than 25 million mobile broad- band terminals in 2008, as well as 38 million DSL modems and 20 million CDMA phones. It completed 231 turnkey network deployments, and its sales of networks and related services were up 111%.

China Telecom Corp the country’s ✆ ✆ biggest fixed-line phone operator, on 20 th April reported that it had gained 4.93 million mobile-phone users in the first quarter for a total of 32.8 million at the end of March. The statement also said that the company aims to add 30 million wireless customers this year, which would more than double the 29.1 million total when the mobile phone unit was acquired from China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd in October 2008. China Telecom intends to use as much as 30% of its mobile phone revenue this year for hand-set subsidies, company chairman Wang Xiaochu said in March. As reported in the ✆ ✆ Financial Times (London) for 15 th April, Canadian telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks is expected by analysts to be sold off piecemeal rather than emerge from bankruptcy protection intact. substantial reductions on health care costs, among other concessions. The talks were being held with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) concerning a new contract covering more than 80,000 employees, who had been working under their old deal since its expiration some four days before the attacks. There was no suggestion that the talks were linked to the sabotage, and the contract negotiations were not suspended. “I can state that CWA members have nothing to do with this at all,” said Candice Johnson, a spokeswoman for the CWA. “There is an investigation going on, and we’ll fully cooperate. But our members are working. They’re on the job.” Rapidly increasing its lending in Latin America, China does well by doing good “This is how the balance of power shifts quietly during times of crisis,” David Rothkopf, a former Commerce Department official in the Clinton administration told the New York Times . “The loans are an example of the checkbook power in the world moving to new places, with the Chinese becoming more active.” The reference was to the large amounts of money being offered by China to countries across Latin America at the same time that President Barack Obama is mounting an effort to rebuild frayed US relationships with countries in the region. Another Times respondent – Dante Sica, the lead economist at Abeceb, a consulting firm in Argentina – said the Chinese overtures in the region were made possible by the “lack of attention that the United States showed to Latin America during the entire Bush administration.” As reported by the Times ’ Simon Romero and Alexei Barrionuevo, in the weeks leading up to Mr Obama’s first visit to the populous region to the south, China was negotiating deals to double a development fund in Venezuela to $12 billion; lend Ecuador at least $1 billion to build a hydroelectric plant; provide Argentina with access to more than $10 billion in Chinese currency; and lend $10 billion to Brazil’s national oil company. (“Deals Help China Expand Sway in Latin America,” 16 th April) Mr Obama would meet with Latin American leaders to discuss economic matters, including a plan to replenish the coffers of the Inter-American Development Bank established in Washington in 1959 to support Latin American and Caribbean development. But the US president will need to move fast if he is to blunt the edge of China’s thrust into the region. Chinese trade with Latin America has grown quickly in this decade, making China the region’s second largest trading partner after the United States. And the recent loan activity suggests a deepening engagement. For its part, China hopes to ensure its access to natural resources, mainly oil, for years to come. The Times reporters note that a single loan planned by China, the $10 billion for Brazil’s national oil company Petrobras, almost matches the total $11.2 billion in financing approved The US and China

A rare but devastating attack in Silicon Valley highlights the vulnerability of fibre optic lines Deliberate interference with fibre optic communications in the US comes most often by way of cybercrime; less often from mishaps with earth-moving machinery, particularly backhoes; seldom from sabotage. In April, however, one or more saboteurs deliberately severed fibre optic cables in California’s Silicon Valley – the major high-tech hub of the country. The attacks cut off landline, cell phone, and Internet service for tens of thousands of people in three counties. As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle , in the predawn hours of 9 th April ten fibre optic cables were cut at four locations. More than 50,000 landline customers – residential and business – lost service for up to 24 hours. While the full effects could not be known immediately, Liz Kniss, president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, told the Chronicle that no “major catastrophic emergency” had resulted from the assault. Although definitely ascribed to malicious intent, it was held by authorities to be unrelated to terrorism. (“Sabotage Attacks Knock Out Phone Service,” 10 th April) Most of the disruption derived from the first attack, shortly before 1:30am, in San Jose – “the capital of Silicon Valley” – on four cables belonging to AT&T Inc. Four more underground cables, at least two of them the property of AT&T, were cut about two hours later at two locations in San Carlos. An additional two lines were sliced in south San Jose. In total, at least 500 fibre optic strands were cut, each requiring hours of painstaking work to be spliced back together. The gravity of the episode was evident from the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Phone company managers and police were joined promptly by FBI agents in an aggressive search for the perpetrators. Potential penalties include criminal charges of vandalism, heavy restitution charges, and more severe consequences if any injuries or fatalities are traced to the destruction. A sense of outrage was prevalent in the cradle of the American semiconductor industry. So was a grim deter- mination to identify and punish the saboteurs. Rob Davis, the police chief of San Jose, told the Chronicle , “I pity the individuals who have done this.” AT&T immediately posted a $100,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the perpetrators, but quickly raised it to $250,000 “as the full scope of the vandalism became more clear.” AT&T customers were not the only ones affected by the outage. Among those without service were subscribers of Verizon, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint wireless, which rely on AT&T to carry their phone traffic back to their networks. Cell phone customers at T-Mobile and AboveNet also lost service. The cutting of the fibre optic lines occurred as AT&T was ❖ ❖ in negotiations with employees of its landline business, which maintains the fibre-optic cables, and was seeking
