Pitch Perfect 2

Dumb and Dumber To

Pulp Fiction wasn’t the only cinematic gem to turn 20 this year. 1994 also saw the release of that other masterpiece Dumb & Dumber, which starred Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as two terminally hapless mates. Reuniting with gross-out comedy pioneers the Farrelly Brothers ( Kingpin, There’s Something About Mary ), the duo are back in Dumb and Dumber To . They’re a fair bit older and no less wiser, with Daniels determined to find his long lost daughter, while Carrey learns something startling about his own parents. Due in cinemas everywhere on 8 January 2015.

A feel-good film that sang itself into our hearts in 2012, Pitch Perfect was the movie that transformed perennial, prickly support Anna Kendrick ( Up in the Air ) into a fully fledged star. It was also a comic showcase of Australia’s own RebelWilson, after stellar pinch-hitting roles in Bridesmaids and Bahelorette . Having taken on all comers in the collegiate circuit in the original, the girls are set to reach for the stars in the eagely awaited sequel, Pitch Perfect 2 .They’re off to the world a cappella championship, where no American team has ever won. Expect team Bellas to hit the highs and the production numbers to hit the stratosphere when Pitch Perfect 2 arrives in cinemas May 2015. In the meantime, JB Hi-Fi has the Blu-ray of Pitch Perfect on special as part of their 3 for $30 deal (only until 11 Jan 2015). Make sure you check in store to mix and match your perfect song and dance combo. HITTING THE HIGHS

I, ROBOT O ne of the most interesting indie features for 2015 is surely Alex Garland’s directorial debut Ex Machina . Having collaborated with Danny Boyle on 28 Days Later and Sunshine , Garland’s Ex Machina is yet another clever piece of dystopian musing, as computer whiz Domhnall Gleeson is enlisted to test a breakthrough robot (Alicia Vikander) that could well pass for human. But has this fembot got plans of her own?

Taken 3

If you’re a bloke, it seems age is no barrier to being an all-out biffo hero. At 68, Sylvester Stallone is still at it, alongside his 67-year- old buddy Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables 3 . And while the 62-year-old Liam Neeson is conspicuously absent from that black-clad mercenary caper, he’s back in action in Taken 3 , set to take over your favourite multiplex on 8 January 2015.

Ex Machina

NINTENDO new3ds Lands at jb N intendo is renowned for revamping its hardware during a lifecycle, and now it’s the 3DS’s time. Called the New Nintendo 3DS, the handheld comes in two sizes; standard and XL. Just about every physical part has been repositioned, but the most significant feature off the bat is the addition of a second analogue stick – wave goodbye to the cumbersome Circle Pad Pro. In a nice little aesthetic touch, the four face buttons have been coloured to mimic the SNES controller, and two extra shoulder buttons have been added. Nintendo have also fixed the issue of gamers having to be positioned correctly to benefit from the 3D effect on the original 3DS, by designing a system that uses the in-built cameras to track your head position – move your noggin from side to side, and behold: the 3D can still be experienced. Taking full advantage of the upcoming range of amiibo interactive figures, the units will also include an NFC reader. The New 3DS, available in white, and New 3DS XL, available in metallic blue and metallic black, are available now; just in time for Christmas.

Birdman

Speaking of acting veterans, that’s exactly what Michael Keaton plays in the latest work from Spanish filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. The dazzling director of 21 Grams and Babel normally works on a broad dramatic canvas but in the upcoming Birdman , his focus is on Riggan (Keaton), a washed up performer plagued with self doubt as he mounts a return to the Broadway stage. Surreal will be an understatement when Birdman takes flight in cinemas on Jan 15.

POP MUSIC REVIEWS

Calvin Harris Motion

Mysteries New Age Music Is Here Like to learn something each day? Some things just remain a mystery. One includes the, well, mysterious trio Mysteries. Their origins and identity are as well known as the path to complete, enduring peace and happiness. Intrigue aside, the music is a fascinating blend of electro, experimental pop, avant-industrial and precise sound design. Each song is a self-contained space, a micro-universe of heavy beats, atmospheric chords, emotive vocals and detailed instrumental arrangements. The band may remain unknown to us, but it’s clear they aren’t afraid of exploring the unknown realms of pop’s future. The possibilities of rock are no mystery to these adventurous, anonymous musicians. Simon Winkler (I nertia) If you don’t listen to dance music, you’ve still possibly heard the term ‘EDM’ (Electronic Dance Music). It began as a harmless catch-all phrase for pop with synths and drum machines, but it’s become a polarising term. Some embrace it as a sign of growing influence, others shy from commercial implications. For better or worse, superstar DJ Calvin Harris is a face of EDM, and Motion cements his place as a purveyor of festival-ready, stadium-sized dance music. There’s clinically precise synth melodies, basement level bass drops, prominent beats and catchy choruses. There are impressive guest appearances from Haim and Gwen Stefani, and a slight nod to purists with Slow Acid exploring early ‘90s acid house. Simon Winkler ( Sony)

The Art of McCartney

I t’s perhaps surprising that it’s taken until 2014 – over 50 years since his first professional recording – for someone to produce a comprehensive tribute to the music of Paul McCartney. But The Art of McCartney – the brainchild of LA producer Ralph Sall

In January, UK label Domino Records (through EMI/ Universal in Australia) will release G Stands for Go-Betweens, a four-disc retrospective of the legendary Brisbane band’s career. The Decemberists return with their first album in three years, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World on January 16. Justin Townes Earle – fresh from a successful visit in October – will release a new album called Absent Fathers in mid-January. Ex-Oasis man Noel Gallagher returns with a second High Flying Birds album, Chasing Yesterday, in March. James Blake is reportedly over halfway through a new album, and has hinted at a Kanye West collaboration. After charming audiences and critics with his album Fear Fun, Father John Misty is releasing I Love You Honeybear in February. Jose Gonzalez – after garnering acclaim with the band Junip – is back with another solo album called Vestiges and Claws in February. Ex-Libertines frontman Carl Barat releases Glory Days with his band The Jackals in February.

The Cavemen reflect about how dudes interact? Maybe it reflects how pinched we all are by ideas that didn’t actually originate from us, rather society? Maybe it reflects that we’re pretty dirty blokes and will try anything – and if it wasn’t for the said social pressure and programming, we’d be far more debauched and degraded. It’s probably the latter. CV : I always like to think about what it would have been like to figure out some foods. I reckon people would have been eating banana peels and eggshells for a while before realising that you just want the inside bit. 04/ Which accents are you most proud of being able to reproduce? NB : Personally, I love doing the South African accent. I grew up in St Ives, and there’s a wonderful eclectic mix there, and a large population of South Africans – and it’s just the tastiest accent in the world to do. That and Scottish! You can sink your teeth into that crusty accent. When you do the Scottish accent, part of DOING that accent is BEING Scottish – as in, you start being a bit more raucous and semi-drunk and aggressive but friendly. CV : Yeah, I do a pretty good Afrikaans accent. Like proper Pretoria boer vibes. My Dad is Afrikaans, so I grew up copying his voice. Nick does an amazing Vietnamese accent, too. He’s got this character who is a white guy that grew up in Vietnam, so he looks white but sounds Vietnamese. 05/ There’s a definite Kiwi/Australian bromance happening across your creative work; for what should we be most thankful to the Kiwis? NB : I have so much to be thankful for! I love Kiwis. I’m a huge Flight of the Conchords fan and LOVE Rhys Darby and (amazing actor and filmmaker) Taika Waititi and Oscar Keightly ( Brotown ). There’s something so playful, hilarious and understated about Kiwis. They can say not much and I’m in goddamn stitches. I just think they’re a genuinely funny people, and their accent complements that. CV : Connor and I have everything to thank Kiwis

The creation of Nick Boshier, Christiaan Van Vuuren and Connor Van Vuuren, SOUL MATES follows two dudes whose friendship transcends time. The Bondi Hipsters talk to STACK . [ Sorry boys – this Q&A has been edited from its cruder, original version because STACK is a family magazine. ] a FINE BROMANCE

01/ What prompted you to turn your mischievous jokes/conversations into actual skits? CHRISTIAANVANVUUREN: My brother Connor and I had won this filmmaking competition thing called the One80Project. It was run through MTV and the prize was to get to make a one-hour pilot that would be broadcast on MTV. Connor and I had seen a bunch of Nick’s online stuff, thought he was hilarious, and felt like he was perfect for one of the roles in our pilot, called SICK! We had great fun working with him, so wanted to keep things going after that. That’s when Bondi Hipsters came about. NICK BOSHIER: Christiaan and I first met and started jamming together before we were “mate” mates. Did that make sense? As in, we said we should work together before we knew each other. We became friends through developing the Bondi Hipsters, so the definite point we decided to work together was the first time we sat down. 02/ Do you think everyone has one soul mate, and they’re the only one who can truly understand the cockles of your heart? NB : I did not expect this question from a JB Hi-Fi mag – but I love it! You would be a good first date! I have two opposing answers to avoid being wrong. On the one hand I say yes, soul mates is a thing. We fall for strangers immediately. Why? We meet the love of our lives on the other side of the planet, and there are so many reasons why this shouldn’t/wouldn’t happen. I believe in coincidence to a point, but then I also believe in people finding each other “again”. But, are they a “soul mate”? The one soul you’re tethered to for eternity? I don’t know. Intellectually I don’t see that being the case, not absolutely anyway. That said, I think that love, or whatever “love” is, is something that can bind us together at a spiritual level and can outlast the lifetime of one body… possibly? Something as powerful as love

could last more than 80/90 years – which is just a breath in forever. That love that could transcend our bodies isn’t just between two people, it could be a love for nature that pervades one lifetime, or love for dance or machines or cats… I know that’s on the odd side of things, but that’s where my musings take me when I’m ASKED BY JB-HI FI’S MAGAZINE THESE REALLY DEEP QUESTIONS! STOP YELLING! CV : You know how they say that every person is unique? I disagree. I think there are maybe about 50 or 60 different types of people. It’s possible that you have got many suitable soul mates, based on the types of people that you’re attracted to and get along with. 03/ What do you think the cavemen reflect about how dudes interact? NB : Ha ha, another good question. Dudes, myself included, are very affected by what society says is good or bad, right or wrong. As cavemen, without ANY of these pressures, what would happen? As in, would you experiment with homosexuality just because you had a body, a mouth and self determinism? I would say, yeah, probably. You’d just do it coz, and further pursuit of that action would be governed by your own thoughts and determinism vs. not our own thoughts, aka social programming. So what does

R obert Aldrich had directed Joan Crawford in the 1956 movie Autumn Leaves, and for several years after, she had continually pestered him to find a project that she could star in with Bette Davis. Being only too aware of the well documented animosity between the two actresses, Aldrich had convinced himself this was never going to happen. That is until 1961, when a member of his staff sent him a suspense novel written by Henry Farrell titled What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Acquiring the film rights, Aldrich sent a copy of the book to Joan Crawford with a note stating that if she was still interested in making a movie with Bette Davis – and more importantly, could persuade Davis to star in it with her – this just might be the perfect project for them. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?  is a gothic melodrama of hate, revenge and murder, involving two aged sisters who had both once been famous movie stars. One of them, Baby Jane Hudson, was a singing and dancing child star in the 1920s whilst her sister Blanche, who as a child had been envious of Jane, had found great success as an adult movie star in the 1930s. Jane blames her failure to make it as an adult actress entirely on Blanche, whose own career ended when she became disabled following an automobile accident. Details are vague, but Blanche’s paralysed legs are the result of Jane being drunk while supposedly driving the car when the accident happened. Now confined together in their dilapidated and decaying Hollywood mansion, Jane is forced to care for her wheelchair-bound sister, and the animosity they’d always had for each other has, after many years, developed into a seething hatred. Their corrosive relationship is exacerbated by the renewed popularity of Blanche’s early feature films now appearing on television, which begins to affect Jane’s sanity as she becomes ever more sadistic and psychotic. Much like the two characters in Farrell’s book, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis’s film careers had

he budgeted the film accordingly. Both Crawford and Davis worked for far less than their normal fees and took percentages of the net profit instead. With a proposed fast shooting schedule of just 30 days, in locations around Los Angeles and a rental studio, Aldrich arrived at a total budget figure of $850,000. But every major studio rejected Baby Jane, stating they were not interested in such a high risk venture starring “those two old broads”. The project appeared to be dead in the water until new independent company Seven Arts – releasing their films throughWarner Bros. – agreed on a tight budget with Aldrich. With no studio facilities available atWarner’s, the cast and crew were located at the Producer’s Studio across the road from Paramount Pictures. The studio was a primitive, ramshackle lot used mainly for

television westerns – was a big comedown from what the two stars had been used to. Now for the first time, after 30 years of continually sniping at each other, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were unleashed in the same arena. However, to everyone’s surprise, there was no

also gone into steep decline. Consequently, Crawford was more than keen to star in the movie. But before Davis committed herself to the production, she needed to

ask Robert Aldrich a couple of questions. “Do I get to play the Baby Jane role?” she asked the director. “Of course,” he replied. “Have you slept with Joan Crawford?” was her next question. “No,” lied a somewhat surprised Aldrich. Davis continued: “Bob, I’m not at all interested in your private life or Crawford’s either. That’s a matter of taste. But I definitely don’t want any pillow talk being the cause of you reducing my amount of close-ups”. Davis was taking no chances in being filmed as a supporting character to Crawford, for although Joan was now middle-aged, her sexual appetite for actors and directors had most certainly not abated. Aldrich knew that a gothic tale starring two middle-aged actresses who had once been Hollywood stars, filmed in monochrome, would be difficult to sell to the movie studios, so

feuding on the set. Both of them demonstrated total professionalism, arriving promptly every day and obeying their director’s instructions to the letter. According to Aldrich, their behaviour during filming was impeccable. But off the set they were still dogmatic adversaries who simply couldn’t restrain themselves from having little digs at each other whenever they were interviewed by the media.  When Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? was released on Halloween night in 1962, it was an immediate box office hit, recouping its original budget in less than two weeks. It would eventually go on to gross over $9 million (in today’s money that would be equivalent to almost $70 million) – not bad for “two old broads” making a comeback. Both actresses received acclaim from critics for their performances, but when the Academy

she was not among the four other nominees. Davis wanted desperately to be the first actress to win three Oscars and was furious to learn that Crawford had volunteered to accept the Best Actress award on behalf of the winner, should she be absent from the ceremony. Davis would later admit that she fully expected to win, as she nervously paced backstage to await the announcement. “And the winner is... Anne Bancroft for The MiracleWorker ”. A devastated Davis felt a hand on her shoulder. “Excuse me, I have an Oscar to collect,” said Crawford as she strode across the stage to thunderous applause to receive the absent Bancroft’s award. Later, at the Oscar party at the Beverly Hilton, Davis ordered a large Scotch and shouted, “This is for Joan Crawford”. When told that Miss Crawford only drank vodka, Davis replied, “I don’t care what she drinks. This is going into her f–ing face”. Davis never threw the drink at Joan, but she would never forget that night and swore she would get her revenge.  Following the success of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? , Aldrich wanted to reunite the two stars. He got the opportunity when he received a four-page outline from Baby Jane author Henry Farrell, with the title What Ever Happened to Cousin Charlotte? .This time he had no problem with a tight budget, as all the major studios were falling over themselves to finance the next Davis/Crawford movie. The plot concerned an ageing recluse haunted

When Davis was told by a reporter in May 1977 that Crawford had died, she replied, “My mother taught me to always speak good of the dead. Joan Crawford’s dead.

Davis survived Crawford by 12 years and continued acting in films and television shows almost right up to her death in 1989.  Although their feud became a Hollywood legend, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were two pioneering alpha females working in a male- dominated business that was utterly soulless and run by money-mad moguls. But through their courage, determination and sheer bloody- mindedness, they were both able to maintain their star status long after all of their female contemporaries from the golden age of movies had faded from memory. They truly were two of Hollywood’s most durable and captivating dames.

When Davis was later asked about her treatment of Joan, she replied, “Why am I so good at playing bitches onscreen? Because I’m not a bitch. Maybe that’s why Miss Crawford always plays ladies”. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford would never speak to – or work with – each other again. However, they had both transformed themselves with What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, which set them up for a cycle of macabre/horror films. Crawford would make another five – each

GTA V PS4

W hy is it that people deem it imperative that they meet up before Christmas? “We must have a drink before Christmas.” “It would be great to catch up before Christmas.” “I haven’t seen you all year – let’s fit in a get together before Christmas.” “Do you want to come around for some FIFA before Christmas?” Why? What’s going to happen after Christmas that I don’t know about? And quite frankly, with so many new games currently doing the circuit, who can possibly find the time to ‘catch up’ before Christmas – unless the food and drink is free! On said Christmas subject, are you struggling to find something to buy the gamer in your household? Well, along with the accessories specialists at JB Hi-Fi, STACK has selected a handful of goodies that any discerning gamer would gnaw your arm off for. If you thought the flurry of games that hit JB in October and November had come to an end, think again. Wring the early summer sweat out of December and you’ll be left with a handful of quality titles to add to the pile of must-play games. Ubisoft dips its toe into the racing circuit with the ambitious online-only The Crew , available in-store now. Super Smash Bros. has made its way to the Wii U, and Kingdom Hearts aficionados will be enjoying the chance to play Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX ahead of the release of Kingdom Hearts III next year. The Company of Heroes 2 single-player expansion Ardennes Assault is waging war in Belgium as we speak – we chat with game director Quinn Duffy. Anyway, if we don’t catch up before Christmas, have a fabulous holiday. See you next year.

With every intention just to sit down, play through the opening levels, drop a few cheats and observe how the game plays in first-person, I allocated a single evening’s play to GTA V on PS4. I didn’t expect to get entirely hooked again and play through the entire game from start to finish, and that’s exactly what happened. While visually the game is a marvel to behold and a huge improvement over the PS3 and 360 versions,

it’s the first-person mode that wins all the points in this remaster, accessed with a simple click of the track pad. The carnage inflicted during shootouts is delivered with a whole new intensity – and indeed ferocity – when you’re staring directly down the iron sight of an assault rifle. Rampages and heists take on a completely different perspective played in the first-person mode, too, and even flying a plane presents a significant challenge. The inspired use of the speaker in the PS4 controller should also be noted. To accompany the red and blue flashing lights when players are being chased by the cops, communication between the police radios can be heard. It’s a nice touch, and a PS4 feature sadly overlooked by many developers. While there was always a desire to discover how the game would look on the new consoles, the addition of the first-person mode has elevated GTA V on PS4 and Xbone from an intriguing proposition to an essential buy for the new-gen library. And we haven’t even spoken about GTA Online...

DID YOU KNOW?

In Kingdom Hearts , Disney Castle was originally meant to be playable. Bond’s watch in Goldeneye 007 actually keeps time, even if you pause the game. L.A. Noire was the first video game to be shown at the Tribeca Film Festival.
