“This goodly frame, the earth…” One of the earliest lessons I learned working on Tube & Pipe Technology was to treat every company and market with fairness from an international perspective. It was vital to cast any patriotism aside in order to deal with such a vast international market as the tube and pipe industry. As readers will know from browsing each issue, this magazine is a broad and all-inclusive canvas of nationalities, without prejudice or bias. Not only is this good for the industry and the magazine, but as an editor I feel enriched by it. Globalisation has led to a tight-knit business community without borders that transcends nationality, culture and religion. It is fascinating to observe how trade in one part of the world can impact another region, based on a collective effort to overcome obstacles such as specific trade interests and laws. But just as the world is united in business success, what is also now felt more acutely on an international scale are economic difficulties. A prime example of this is the airline industry, which combines business travel, tube and pipe products and globalisation under one domain. With pressure from economic problems and the rising cost of oil, the airline industry is currently undergoing a severe crisis. A number of strategic airline mergers are under review to combat the cutback in flights, spiraling cost of airfares and lower numbers of passengers in first-class and business class. British Airways is currently holding talks with Spain’s leading airline Iberia, while in the USA rivals Delta and Northwest have recently agreed to a $5bn merger deal. There is also the specter of airlines going bust hanging over the industry. Discussing the aviation difficulties,

The verdict: no Metav at Tube 2010

Following a review of exhibitor and visitor reaction to this year’s successful Tube and wire 2008, the show organiser Messe Düsseldorf has announced the details of the next event in two years time. The leading international trade fairs in their field, Tube 2010 and wire 2010 will again take place together from 12-16 April 2010. Messe Düsseldorf has also revealed further good news that Metav, which took place this year alongside Tube and wire for the first time, will not be held in conjunction with Tube and wire in 2010. Although this year’s Tube was again a record-breaker, a number of Tube exhibitors expressed concern over Tube’s hall reshuffle to accommodate Metav. It is expected that Tube 2010 will not experience the same disruption and relocation of a large number of tube exhibitors. Instead, Messe Düsseldorf will be able to provide an expanded exhibition area for Tube 2010 at the Düsseldorf exhibition centre, with a considerably larger amount of floorspace available for Tube if required.

This positive news comes on the back of record attendance figures for this year’s show. Tube 2008 attracted 25 per cent more international visitors and 11 per cent more German visitors. In terms of exhibitors, there was a growth rate of 32 per cent for international exhibitors and 8 per cent for German exhibitors. These figures meant that the display area for Tube 2008 was enlarged by one third. Tube 2010 will showcase tube and pipe production and processing machines, raw materials and tubes produced from various materials. For the second time, innovations from the areas of pipelines and OCTG (oil country tubular goods) technology will be introduced. At Tube 2008, around 90 per cent of the visitors rated the new exhibition area of pipelines and OCTG technology as ‘good’ or ‘very good’. After the premiere of OCTG technology at this year’s event, 8 per cent of the visitors surveyed reported that they were interested in these innovative technologies. This particularly applies to the areas of pipeline construction (49 per cent), materials (48 per cent) and machines and systems (25 per cent).

The success of Tube 2008 was mirrored by wire 2008, which achieved the highest- ever level of international participation. Just under 60 per cent of the visitors came from abroad, making wire one of the most international events in the Messe Düsseldorf portfolio. In addition, wire 2008 also experienced a visitor increase of 18 per cent compared with the previous event in 2006. Pedrazzoli establish UK company from buyout of Eurobend

Pedrazzoli IBP SpA, Italy, has formed a new company – Pedrazzoli Tube Technology (PTT) Ltd – in the UK following the purchase of the intellectual rights of Eurobend Ltd. The main objectives of Pedrazzoli Tube Technology (PTT) Ltd will be to sell and service Pedrazzoli tube benders, together with end finishers and automatic cutting lines. Other duties will be to support existing Pedrazzoli equipment in the UK, service and support all Eurobend tube benders, and provide tooling/automation solutions, training, and machine refurbishment. A particular highlight, the Eurobend tube benders EB20, EB76 and EB120/150, are being introduced to the existing Pedrazzoli range of machines. These machines will continue to use the highly acclaimed Ebwin control device. In addition, the traditional Pedrazzoli BM 42 IMS and BM 65 IMS 3 axis tube benders will now be offered to the UK market at very competitive prices. They will be available with either the IMS control or the Ebwin control for customers that require compatibility with existing Eurobend machines. Pedrazzoli Tube Technology (PTT) Ltd will continue to build on its successful record for both traditional Eurobend and Pedrazzoli machines. Orders have been secured for two BM 120/150 EB machines, which are currently under manufacture by Pedrazzoli IBP SpA at its Slovakian manufacturing facility. Tekno/Tube Arabia 2009 has been preponed by one day, with the organisers announcing the new dates as 10-13 January 2009. These major concurrent exhibitions, co-organised by Al Fajer Information & Service and Messe Düsseldorf, will take place for the second time in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Held again at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, the 2009 event will be the 9 th international trade fair for industrial machinery, metalworking, machine tools, dies/moulds and tube/pipe. However, Tube Arabia featured as a separate section for the first time in 2007. An additional special section next year will be Moldex 2009. Sikora expands regional US office in Peachtree City Sikora International Corp, the regional US office of German-based Sikora AG, has expanded into new offices in Peachtree City, GA. The company has enlarged its offices to make further progress in North and South America’s growing markets for measuring and control equipment for the cable, tube and plastics industries. Tube Products of India launches facility in China

Tube Products of India has established a new company in China located in Suzhou Industrial Park, Jiangsu Province. The new company, named M/s Tubular Precision Products (Suzhou) Company Ltd (TPP), will be involved in the manufacture of precision cold drawn and welded steel tubes. The plant will have a capacity of 12,000t per annum in the first phase. Part of the US$2.2 billion Murugappa Group, Tube Products of India was established in 1955 and is the largest manufacturer of precision welded steel tubes in India.

Moving times for DavyMarkham’s fabrication department

The space to accommodate the relocated facility was created by carrying out a critical appraisal of the entire main workshop, with two 100m x 20m bays eventually cleared of redundant machine tools. Considerable heavy lifting expertise was needed as machines to be moved included 4m wide Bronx bending rolls (weighing around 200t), a hydraulic press at 120t, eight 25t fabrication assembly beds, and several bending and forming machines at upwards of 10t each. The new facility includes a newly-installed fume extraction system, and new gas lines and tanks. The finished layout of the new department will minimise the movement of heavy fabrications and improve workflow between fabrication and machining bays. DavyMarkham’s fabrication department has been engaged in a number of major projects over the years, including tooling for the Eurotunnel and fabrication for Heathrow airport. DavyMarkham, UK, has recently relocated its entire steel fabrication department from a separate onsite building to its main manufacturing works. The move was a complex task as it involved a range of equipment, including heavy presses, bending and welding machines, CNC profile cutters and heat treatment areas, with the largest machine weighing around 200t.

The relocation took six months to complete and was driven by the commercial objectives of streamlining production, reducing energy consumption and trimming costs. The previous location had been 6,000m 2 and the cost of heating the building was high during winter months, especially with rising energy prices. It was also complex and time consuming when moving heavy fabrications across to the adjacent machining bay for final finishing.

New business division and management change for Kocks

Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG, Germany, has established a new business division called ‘Process, service & consulting (PSC)’, in order to build up and extend its service capabilities. The target of this business division will be to present general process technology of the rolled product up to its differentiated applications. The PSC division will focus the company’s professional and service-oriented duty towards its customers and the preparation of concepts tailored to individual requirements. The new division will also cover services concerning spare part procurement and handling of technical questions. Mr Pascal Rénevier takes over from Dr-Ing W-Jürgen Ammerling, who has carried out this position with success since 1986. Now aged 67, Dr Ammerling will continue to actively support the company. Istanbul the destination of ITA ’ s next technical conference

The International Tube Association has revealed the location of its next major biennial conference as Istanbul, Turkey. Titled Pipe & Tube Istanbul 09 ‘Technology for quality, productivity and profit’ , the conference will take place from 2-3 November 2009. The conference will be organised jointly with Ilhas Fuar, the team behind the Boru exhibition. The event will form part of the ITA’s 30 th anniversary celebrations. Since its foundation, the ITA has organised over 40 technical conferences, seminars

and symposiums. Istanbul will join a distinguished list of recent venues like Dnepropetrovsk, Prague, Veracruz, Bilbao and Toronto for the most important conference in the association’s two-year timetable of technical events. Metal-Expo set for best ever show at new location

The event is one of the leading industrial trade shows held in Russia, the CIS and the Baltic States. Kemppi invests in new electronics factory

Spectro opens Japanese office and demonstration facility Spectro Analytical Instruments, Germany, has opened an instrument demonstration and application laboratory in Tokyo to better serve its growing Japanese customer base. Welding equipment manufacturer, Kemppi OY, and its parent Company Kemppi Capital Oy, Lahti, Finland, is investing €15 million (£12 million) in new offices and extended production facilities at its existing facilities in Lahti, Finland. Construction of the new facilities has been underway since December 2007, with completion expected by August 2008. The new facility will provide an extra 8,500m 2 of floor space, and will house the company’s existing electronics and coil component production area upon completion.
