Quality control and process optimization: at the extrusion of single and multi layer plastic tubes and pipes

X-RAY 2000 is an attractive on-line measuring and control system for plastic tubes and hoses. State of the art X-ray technology provides continuous measurement on the wall thickness, eccentricity, diameter and ovality. With the X-RAY 2000 SIKORA presents an exciting measuring system, which is focused on process optimization by providing: quality control and improvement reduction of start-up scrap reduction of material over-consumption increased productivity approach as simple as a diameter gauge The technique of transilluminating the tube or hose with X-Rays in two planes of view provides wall thick- ness measurements without calibration requirements. Reliable measurements are available for multi-layer products with and without fabric reinforcement layers. This unique technique makes wall thickness measure- ments an operation as simple as a diameter gauge! With a relatively low investment a return of investment drastically below 12 month can be achieved.

Get up, stand up… U nder the tightening stranglehold of globalization and the growing power of multinational corporations, today’s worker rights are under increasing pressure. As an economic model, global capitalism is a more aggressive beast, with modern features such as private equity firms. Private equity – with its emphasis on making profit by decreasing operating costs – is becoming the preferred method of acquiring assets (a threefold increase in private equity investment was recorded in 2006 by IFSL Research). In the same week that workers went out on strike over pension rights at the UK’s Grangemouth oil refinery, Shell and BP announced higher than expected 1 st quarter profits of £7bn. The strike was the first in over 70 years to have closed a British oil refinery, and cost in the region of £50mn. In the midst of all the profit declarations and fears that the credit crunch might have dented company coffers by a few per cent, the issue of employment rights does not receive the attention it so rightly deserves. Although it is clearly not ideal for workers to resort to strike action and work- to-rule, a tipping point is reached when an employer needs to be regulated. A growing number of global companies are migrating manufacturing locations to more regions such as eastern Europe, South America and Asia. With cross-border employment issues heading into an increasing minefield, it is essential that worker rights, social justice and sustainable development become even higher global priorities. Trade unions across the world –

from Asia to eastern Europe – must effectively coordinate their efforts. One such organisation is the world’s largest federation of trade unions – the International Trade Union Confederation (www.ituc- csi.org) – which through a Global Unions movement represents the interests of 166 million workers in 156 countries and territories. The final word should go to ITUC’s mission statement, “More than ever in its history, confronted by unbridled capitalist globalisation, effective internationalism is essential to the future strength of trade unionism and its capacity to realise that mission.” Rich Sears Editor • Email: richard@intras.co.uk

Tube Russia 2008: Moscow, Russia

From welding of short tubes on the factory floor to mechanised pipe welding in the Saudi desert, the issues of welding are always complex and present a stiff challenge. It is first important to recognize the trends – the technology that works – before any advances can be made in welding technology. With the substantial number of methods and products available – ERW, orbital, stick, MIG, TIG, FCAW – the subject of welding is a melting pot that will always engender progression. Tube and Pipe Welding: Trends and Progress A brand new exhibition for the Ukrainian, Eastern European and CIS markets, Tubes & Fittings Ukraine 2008 will take place in Kiev from 18-20 June 2008. Based on a healthy economy, a solid Ukrainian tube industry, and a hospitable east Slav spirit, the fledgling event aims to become a mainstay in the exhibition calendar. Organised by TDS- Expo, the exhibition will also host a tube and pipe conference from 18-19 June. Tubes & Fittings Ukraine: Kiev, Ukraine Russia is always a tough but lucrative business arena to crack; in order to succeed, a company must have a dedicated presence on the Russian market. An ideal opportunity to reinforce that presence, Tube Russia 2008 will take place for the sixth time from 27-30 May 2008, held alongside regular partners Metallurgy-Litmash and Aluminium/Non- Ferrous. This feature offers a market overview and includes the Tube Russia exhibitor list.

New LAP facility doubles production space for ‘large measuring systems’

With future development in mind, the investment package also includes the modernization of existing facilities at the company’s headquarters in Lüneburg. The new production building features special foundations for the heavy equipment, a crane with a lifting capacity of more than five tonnes and a most state-of-the-art IT infrastructure. The software engineers have direct access to the systems from their work places,

LAP GmbH Laser Applikationen, Germany, has recently opened a new 1,500m 2 production building at its Lüneberg headquarters. The expansion effectively doubles the company’s production space to allow for big increases in machinery orders. Involving a total investment of almost €4 million, the development provides the laser measurement equipment manufacturer with the

systems must be completely assembled and tested here in our workshops under realistic conditions before they can be shipped to our customers. We are now in a position to perform pre-shipment approvals in our workshops, checking every single detail before the system is shipped. This gives our customers confidence.”

necessary space to produce large measuring systems for the steel industry. During the last three years the company has raised its turnover by 150 per cent to €30 million. The expansion was urgently needed due to these record turnovers and increasingly fuller order books. The production of large measuring systems – which sometimes span over eight metres – could not be realized in the existing facilities. The expansion of the production capacity was unavoidable. Mr Guido Jung, managing director of LAP, explains “Our

met all expectations we have of leading international trade fairs. For us, they proved to be outstanding platforms with the expected high level of sophistication of the trade visitors.” Over 73,000 visitors attended the combined Tube and wire events. Tube welcomed 32,900 visitors from 71 countries, a 9.7 per cent increase on 2006. Of these visitors, 52 per cent were international. The next show will take place in Spring 2010, with an announcement on show dates due soon. The jury is also currently out on whether Metav will take place alongside Tube and wire in two years’ time. As the doors closed on Tube 2008 many new doors had already been opened, with full order books, newly forged partnerships and excellent prospects for post-fair business the result of the show held in Düsseldorf from 31 March to 4 April.

Tube welcomed a record-breaking number of over 1,000 exhibitors in more than 41,000m 2 display space, while partner show wire 2008 hosted 1,129 exhibiting companies. The two regular shows were also held alongside

new show Metav, which meant that Tube was relocated into exhibition halls 6, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 8a, 8b and part of hall 5. The new halls 6, 8a and 8b

 A number of artistic exhibits added extra interest to Tube 2008 (exhibit from Felss Group)

provided a more modern environment for Tube exhibitors.

There was a mixed reaction to the co-staging of Metav, with a number of exhibitors saying that the show had become too large, while there was little of relevance between Tube and Metav. Dr Ing Joachim Schönbeck, chairman of the management board of SMS Meer GmbH and member of the management of SMS GmbH, said, “The two trade fairs, wire and Tube, have

enabling them to monitor the functioning and accuracy of the equipment at all times. The official inauguration ceremony was attended by Mr Hartmut Möllring, minister of finance of the German federal state of Lower Saxony, Mr Ulrich Maedge, mayor of Lüneburg, and district administrator Mr Manfred Nahrstedt. Over the last three years LAP has increased its turnover by 150 per cent to €30 million. During the same period 50 new jobs were created – bringing the company’s current headcount in software development, sales and production to some 110 people. The growth in staff creates additional capacities in order to meet specific customer requirements. Established in 1984, LAP has supplied laser-based systems for high-precision measurements of geometric dimensions, such as position, width, thickness, length, diameter and flatness, to industrial customers. LAP systems excel at providing ultra-precise measurement results under harshest operating conditions. Hundreds of LAP systems are tried and tested every day in the most demanding industrial environments. LAP Laser GmbH Laser Applikationen – Germany Fax : +49 4131 951196 Website : www.lap-laser.com

Samco has two manufacturing facilities, one in Toronto and the other in India

A leader in the North American roll forming industry has aligned itself with an innovative European firm to bring enhanced efficiencies, creativity and service. Samco Machinery Ltd, Toronto, Canada, has formed an alliance with Formia Tech Oy of Jyvaskyla, Finland. The two companies have plans to “foster a culture of advanced technological exchange and quicker product development” to each other’s geographic areas. The expected result of the alliance is “world class technology at globally competitive prices” . Samco specialises in design and manufacture of rollforming systems primarily

for steel framing, purlin, automotive, HVAC and material handling. Samco has two manufacturing facilities, one located in Toronto and the other in India where it is the majority owner of SAGA (Samco and Gallium, a tube mill manufacturer). The company already supports North and South America, South Africa, Europe and India. Formia specialises in roof tile roll form lines, deep trapezoidal panel roll forming lines and insulated metal panel rollforming lines. Formia has two assembly facilities, located in Jyvaskyla and one in Nanging, China. The company has strong local presence in Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and China.

Rofin-Sinar Marking division moves to new premises

After 17 years at its existing facilities, Rofin- Sinar Laser GmbH, Germany, has moved to a new company building – but only 150m away from its old home. The company has been steadily growing in recent years, meaning the relocation was inevitable. In 2007 spacious new facilities were built just half a block away. With 7,000m 2 , the three-story red building offers enough room for all departments – and for future growth. The company develops, produces and distributes solid state and CO 2 laser sources and laser marking systems. The company also sets a high value on additional services like training.

In the new premises, the sales, service and training centre are close to the entrance. With a space of 250m 2 , the new application lab provides the opportunity to run application trials on virtually all of Rofin’s marking systems. The new address, which is immediately effective, is Dieselstraße 15 D-85232 Bergkirchen, Germany. Rofin has also recently appointed key members of staff. Mr Stephan Geiger has become the new managing director of Rofin/ Baasel Lasertech in Starnberg, Germany. Mr Geiger’s previous positions within Rofin include manager of ‘new technologies’ for the company’s

Tube China 2008 set to repeat a winning formula

increased overall between 2002-2006 by a total of 4 per cent (according to the Steel Tube Manufacturers Association). In contrast, China has registered an increase of 142 per cent for the same period. Since 2002, China’s exports have increased from 700,000t to 5.9 million tons in 2006. This means that for the first time China has overtaken Germany, Japan and Italy as a pipe/tube exporter and is the number one global player in the world market. China is also now the third largest supplier country of seamless pipe to the EU countries. With this strength continuing to grow, Tube China 2008 is again certain to be surefire success. Sponsorship will come from the International Tube Association (ITA), together with Chinese associations including China Iron & Steel Association (CISA), China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA), and China Steel Pipe Association. Tube and wire China will return this year for the third time from 23-26 September, taking place immediately after the 2008 Olympic Games have been held in Beijing. Due to the Olympics, the exhibition calendar in both Beijing and Shanghai is expected to be extremely busy. Tube China will again take place at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre (SNIEC) in Shanghai, China. Jointly organised by Messe Düsseldorf China Ltd

and the Metallurgical Council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (MC-CCPIT), the event is predicted to be even bigger than the sell-out show in 2006. This year’s event is sure to reflect the incredible success of the Chinese tube and pipe industry. Within just a few years China has developed into the third largest economy in the world behind the USA and Japan. The enormous economic growth in recent years

has led to China becoming today’s largest worldwide producer and consumer of steel and steel pipe. In 2006, China accounted for more than one third of world production totalling 99.8 million tons. To put this into perspective, worldwide steel pipe production

LOI Italimpianti and Interpipe Niko Tube intensify cooperation

Industrial furnace producer LOI Thermprocess, an LOI Italimpianti company, has received a major contract for a rotary hearth furnace from Interpipe Niko Tube, Ukraine. The new furnace is intended to expand seamless tube production capacities and to further improve the competitiveness of the company. In future, the new rotary hearth furnace will reheat up to 96t/h of extruded steel blooms. The direct-fired furnace, which will be a state-of-the-art unit, is to replace an old rotary hearth furnace and will be integrated into the existing production plant. A special mathematical model developed by LOI Italimpianti will ensure compliance with a defined reheating process with a constant material temperature at the furnace exit. This will allow significant energy savings and will improve the quality of the material as a result of reduced scale formation. Production is scheduled to start in February 2009. LOI Italimpianti is a market leader for industrial furnaces for metals. LOI Italimpianti is a company of the Tenova Group, formerly Techint Technologies. Tenova develops and produces leading technologies, products and services for the metals and mining industries. Tenova is near to the customer through a network of 20 companies in 14 countries. Increased sawing centre turnover for RSA in 2007

RSA will spend additional money on its worldwide service network. The company aims to consolidate its market position in the global automotive supply industry, achieving uniform quality standards from any location through a uniform machine concept. This requires a worldwide efficient and reliable service from machine manufacturers. RSA considers the prospects for its tube-processing branch to be absolutely positive. The company’s profits of the past two years will be invested in up-to- date production in order to meet the next economic downturn. According to RSA, many companies are already planning for additional processing modules when purchasing sawing centres. These companies base their strategy on opening up additional sales potentials with short notice equipment expansion, in case production capacity decreases. This way, the branch is well positioned. including products, machinery, equipment and engineering. Technology on display will include dies and tools, finishing and shaping, machinery and plant equipment, measuring and testing, tube mills, rolling mill technology, ferrous tube and pipe, non-ferrous tube and pipe, and plastic/ composite. Organised by Expomedia Group, the new event will also feature conferences, technical workshops and seminars about domestic and international tube and pipe production. The organizers expect in the region of 250 exhibitors and over 5,000 visitors in 3,500m 2 of exhibit space. Sectors represented will include automotive, aircraft manufacturing, construction, chemicals, energy and power supply, mechanical engineering, marine and shipbuilding, offshore, oil and gas, and petrochemicals. The opening times for the event will be 10am to 6pm. RSA, Germany, achieved a turnover of over €21m in 2007, surpassing the high goals the company set itself regarding turnover and market share. In particular, the company experienced above-average sales increases in the market sectors of the automotive supply industry and tube production. Dipl-ing Mr Rainer Schmidt, RSA’s business manager, states, “In the pre-production of the tube and section processing, the diversity of workpieces has considerably

increased – last but not least due to new steel grades. Flexibility and profitability are the keywords for up-to-date sawing centres and the reason for our increased sales.” For 2008, RSA has again considerably increased its research and development budget. “We will considerably advance in the field of rationalization of working processes. The customer will be able to increase the flexibility of its production and lower the piece costs,” Mr Schmidt explains.

Logstor and Mannesmann Fuchs Rohr form oil and gas partnership

The move is designed to

Logstor, Denmark, and Mannesmann Fuchs Rohr GmbH, Germany, are to launch a one-stop-shop production concept for pre- insulated pipes for the oil and gas industry. Logstor is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of pre-insulated pipes, and Mannesmann Fuchs Rohr GmbH (a member of the Salzgitter Group) is Germany’s leading company within longitudinally HFI-welded steel pipes. Together, the two companies will form a strong joint marketing programme tailored to the oil and gas industry. The move is designed to optimize production and logistics and thereby strengthen Logstor and Mannesmann Fuchs Rohr’s market position in the oil and gas industry. This common approach will be focused predominantly on the oil and gas sector for onshore and offshore pipelines. Both companies will remain separately owned and follow their own existing sales and marketing strategies. “Logstor and Mannesmann Fuchs Rohr have formerly worked closely together

on joint project planning, and we’ve been able to solve some of the most demanding challenges. We therefore welcome the extended prospects of a shared marketing programme,” said Mr Marc Rasquin, CEO of Mannesmann Fuchs Rohr. “Our marketing agreement with Mannesmann Fuchs Rohr is a new opportunity for Logstor to support our oil and gas customers with increased capacity and a positive delivery of our products. The new agreement has been formed following an ongoing strategic review conducted by Logstor to ensure the supply of world-class pre-insulated pipes. With this decision, we are now taking the next step in becoming the world’s number one manufacturer of pre-insulated pipes to the oil and gas industry,” said Mr Jakob Jespersen, managing director of Logstor Oil & Gas. Until just a few years ago, Logstor’s main focus was the growing demand for district heating. Logstor has more recently developed core competences in pre-insulated pipe systems in the area of transportation of oil and gas. Today,

Maillefer SA gets backing from the Alpha Group

IIL celebrates 60 years of service to the industry

The management of Maillefer SA, Switzerland, has proceeded with a second buy-out of the company with backing from the Alpha Group. Prior to the deal, Maillefer management was financed through private equity from Argos Soditic. The timing for the buy-out was opportune, as Maillefer activities have been steadily developing. Total sales in 2006, as announced in early 2007, reached a record exceeding €100 million. Though the figures

for 2007 are not yet published, they are clearly topping those of 2006. The Alpha Group is an independent private equity firm based in Europe. It manages funds exceeding €1.7 billion. Maillefer looks forward to expand activities into new growth areas with the support of Alpha. Maillefer SA – Switzerland Fax : +41 21 691 2143 Website : www.mailleferextrusion.com

International Industries Limited (IIL), Pakistan, has recently celebrated its 60 th anniversary of recognized services to the international steel processing industry.
