THE COLOUR of green

G reen Grass of Home was a popular hit tune for many years but today the significance of green should more aptly be, green is where the home is. Better described as eco-friendly, the new buzz-word covers a multitude of disciplines that affect our daily lives and unless we each start con- tributing to the concept in any way we can, there is a strong possibility that our offspring may not have a planet in which to survive. Being a magazine dedicated to equipment and trucks, it is appropriate that I devote something to the discipline that covers the trucking industry showing some of the steps which the industry has taken to lead us into those greener pastures we dream about. Many of the developed countries of the world are concerned about the safety and environ- mental impact of trucks and buses, according to surveys conducted by concerned institu- tions. The surveys identified that although most people realise that new trucks and buses are increasingly safer and more environmen- tally friendly, few are familiar with the safety and environmental technologies that feature in the latest generation of these vehicles. In analysing the results of these various sur- veys it was clear that the majority agreed that trucks and buses played an important role in the economy whilst only a small minority dis- agreed that trucks are the most efficient form of transport option for goods.

There were some concerns regarding the safety of trucks and buses and their environ- mental impact, particularly in built-up areas because they are seen as being essential to our standard of living. This is why there is unilateral support for the implementation of stricter measures regarding vehicles in the urban environment. There was a small mi- nority however who even believed that trucks should be banned completely from our cities. Impossible to implement so make sure that every truck used in built up areas conforms and provide each one with certification, recog- nisable by a special number plate or such like. Biofuels is the new buzz-word and South Afri- ca has already made some meaningful contri- butions towards the development of biodiesel technologies. In December 2007, the Depart- ment of Minerals and Energy announced the 5-year Industrial Biofuels strategy which was aimed at stimulating not only job creation but also development in rural areas of the country where crop management had been neglected. The objective was for a 2% penetration level of biofuels in the national liquid fuel supply which equates to 400 million litres per annum. To date, investments in biofuels in South Africa have been very modest to say the least when one considers that South Africa has much more to offer with its capacity to grow total plant biomass as well as producing sugarcane or sugarbeet streams for ethanol or sunflower,

canola and soya oil for biodiesel production.

It’s interesting to see how some manufactur- ers have already been pro-active in that area to stimulate the use of biofuels. Scania has embarked on a programme of offering sus- tainable solutions to the transport industry whereby they combine the sales of their vehi- cles with arranging a biofuel supplier contract as part of the deal. South Africa has currently more than 200 small entrepreneurs that produce biodiesel on a small scale, mostly from waste vegetable oils. Major concerns for these entrepreneurs at the moment, is feedstock uptake and meet- ing specification required by the petrochemi- cal industries. South Africa has the potential as a technology provider andnow is the time is to re-visit the current lack of development in the biofuels arena and capitalise on our resources and ex- pertise to move forward into the next century. Many manufacturers have produced vehicles to meet these challenges, all ready to meet the demands of the eco structure. All it now takes is for the man-in-the-street to come for- ward, be counted and do his bit.

Shantui DELIVERS IN PARTS AND SERVICE By Pierre Sanson

In the African context, and as confirmation of their growing presence, Shantui has con- cluded deals in neighbouring territories such as Zambia and Kenya. In Zambia, Shantui recently delivered equipment worth USD$ 4 million to the Zambia National Service. The deal consisted of 320 hp SD32 bull- dozers and 20 ton SE210 excavators to be employed as part of the youth development programme aimed at infrastructure develop- ment throughout the country. Similar deals were concluded in Kenya where some 68 pieces of equipment were supplied to the Kenya National Youth Service. With Africa’s flourishing economies and the increasingly close economic ties with China, Shantui is steadily growing its overseas busi- ness, seizing this valuable opportunity by ag- gressively pursuing procurement contracts as well as developing products according to customer demand for respective markets. After sales and service, parts distribution and delivery are on par with global standards and are quickly helping to strengthen Shan- tui as a leading multinational brand. Shantui dealers are well-trained and experienced in service delivery as with the local market. Lo- cally, the parts team is very well established

S hantui Construction Machinery es- tablished a presence in South Africa in 2010 by opening its first subsidi- ary company. This is in addition to the facil- ities in East and West Africa where a large number of machines are operating in major projects. This can only be attributed to the growth in the reliability, affordability, ease of operation and parts availability that the Shantui brand offers. Many of the African economies have not yet reached the level of development where the latest innovations in technical and electronic technology in equipment has any additional ma- terial benefits, as hi-tech expertise is not always available to keep the equipment fully operational.

Emerging economies have come to rec- ognise that the Shantui brand meets the requirements of robustness and ease of maintenance so necessary under the harsh African operating conditions. Already the South African landscape is dot- ted with some 400 units of equipment, all well supported by 14 exclusive dealers who have the trust in the Shantui brand, to offer specialized backup as and where required. Success in Africa has been the result of Shantui distancing itself from the negative typecast of inferior quality and service as- sociated with some brands from the East’s manufacturing sector, to become the largest bulldozer manufacturer in the world.

Many of the parts, especially undercarriage components are compatible with the some well known Jap- anese brands so Shantui is able to cater for their requirements over and above their own. “This has proved to be a huge advantage as customers are able to evaluate our service levels even though they are operating oppo- sition machines and are purchasing their re- quirements from us,” said Johno Routledge, Logistics and Parts Sales Manager SADEC region, Shantui South Africa. Shantui has an advantage by virtue of their association with international brands such as Cummins, Weichai, Deutz and ZF, which form the basis of the power train fitted to their equipment. This means that their own service coverage is extended by utilising the facilities of these manufacturers in areas that require additional technical expertise. THE ADVANTAGES of turbo coupling By Pierre Sanson

C onstant flow turbo coupling has been designed for vehicles in order to help eliminate the shock effects that the drivetrain may experience throughout day- to-day operation. This, in turn, reduces wear and tear dramatically, thus decreas- ing maintenance costs. Turbo couplings are of the utmost importance in the commercial vehicle market, partially due to the sheer size and weight of the vehicles, and par- tially due (at least in South Africa) to the dubious nature of the drivers. But how exactly can a component eliminate shock effects so easily? Simply put, the torque transfer system is designed so that there is no solid and mechanical contact. Usually through the use of a mineral oil, turbo couplings make use of a liquid torque-transfer system in order to give the vehicle its drive. Voith Turbo is the worldwide leader when it comes to these hy- drodynamic couplings, and an analysis of their system reveals exactly how it works. While the system as a whole is easier to un- derstand with a diagram, the system can be explained as two wheels that are not connect- ed or touching in any way, but are encased to- gether and form part of a closed system. On the sides of the wheels that face each other there

are hollowed out slats, and in these slats rests the coupling’s liquid. The first wheel, known as the pump wheel, is driven by the motor. This starts spinning and the torque transmitted by the engine is converted into the kinetic ener- gy of the liquid. This liquid, essentially thrown into the slats of the second wheel, known as the turbine wheel, starts it spinning and in so doing, converts the kinetic energy of the liquid back into mechanical energy and provides the vehicle with drive. Of course, at a standstill the liquid is at rest, and at start-up the pump wheel and the tur- bine wheel are turning at different speeds until what is called nominal operation is achieved. This means that the two wheels are turning at almost the same speed (the minor difference in speed being called the nominal slip), but what is important to note here is that the liquid transfer between the two wheels ceases. The flow becomes stationary and the liquid, for all intensive purposes, becomes a solid component in the drivetrain, this means that only the torque required by the driven machine is transmitted. Voith have paid special attention to the min- ing industry in recent years and have now developed a water-operated turbo coupling.

The water-operated coupling could be used in any application; however, it was designed with a specific view to end-users in the mining in- dustry. The industry’s vast demands on output, safety and environmental protection have re- stricted much of the old technology used; how- ever, Voith have turned this into an opportunity for innovation. Water as an operating medium for the turbo coupling holds significant improvement over the use mineral oil. Most notably, it is far more readily available, and it is environmentally friendly. On top of this, also take into account that it is often the case that vehicles at min- ing sites will be operating underground. It is undoubtedly safer to use water in such cir- cumstances. “The water coupling transmits power smoothly and virtually wear-free, without any mechan- ical contact between the torque-transmitting components,” Voith advertise. This innovative coupling is not only important to the vehicles that are involved in mining operations though. These couplings can run any numbers of belt conveyers, fans and pumps that may be on site as well. It is evident that, among others, the mining industry is set to receive huge benefit thanks to this innovation from Voith Turbo. b

EATON EXPANDS UltraShift ® PLUS Automated Transmission Coverage

P ower management company Eaton has increased the functionality in its lineup of UltraShift ® PLUS automat- ed transmissions with enhancements that allow for compatibility with 2-speed axles. Geared primarily to increase the appeal of UltraShift PLUS among vocational custom- ers, especially dump and heavy haul fleets, the new compatibility provides a cost-sav- ing alternative to torque converter automat- ic transmissions. The new features include enhanced gear re- duction capabilities to maximize on/off road capabilities. In addition, the option allows for T he new Leuze RSL 400 safety laser scanner family incorporates two au- tonomous protective functions in one device, saving end users money while still ensuring quality of performance. Available from Countapulse Controls, the Leuze RSL 400 scanner’s most important feature is that it has two independently ad- justable configurations and two safety-related switching output pairs (OSSDs). Together with an operating range of 8.25 m and a scan- ning angle of 270°, this feature allows two different protection tasks to be performed simultaneously with just the one device. Ger- ry Bryant, managing director of Countapulse Controls, the distributor in southern Africa for Leuze sensors say that this capability means that, in most cases, customers do not need to acquire a second laser scanner, thus re-

the elimination of gear boxes that are typically installed behind an automatic design. The re- sult is lower overall vehicle cost, excellent per- formance and less drive line complexity that typically brings about reduced servicing and maintenance costs. “We are always exploring new ways to expand our breadth of transmission products to best serve the commercial trucking industry,” said Ryan Trzybinski, product planning manager for Eaton. “Fleets that prefer to operate with 2-speed axles now have an attractive trans- mission option to increase their efficiencies and improve performance.” ducing their capital investment. Not only are the scanners easy to set up and configure, but they are extremely easy to operate. Functionality and user friendliness are key attributes of the devices and upgrades can be performed quickly and without electronic and mechanical realignment, readjustment or configuration. “The RSL 400 range of laser scanners rep- resents a drive towards high quality, com- bined with simplicity. The goal is to encour- age customers to embrace these scanners and the advantages they offer in the safety arena. A separate connection unit, with inte- grated cable management, ensures uncom- plicated mounting and the large, plain-text display with electronic spirit level makes alignment simple,” Bryant points out. VOITH ADDING VALUE to the African power, oil and gas aftermarket

The recently-established Voith Africa Power, Oil and Gas (POG) Division covers the full scope of maintenance, servicing, upgrades and repairs across Africa. The company has filled a gap in the local market by providing a comprehensive and dedicated aftermarket services offering. Voith is recognised globally as the leading OEM for high-speed rotating equipment, includ- ing: high-speed gearboxes, fluid couplings, geared fluid couplings, variable speed drives, turbine controls and torque converters. Voith Africa POG vice president Derain Pillay states that the division boasts global technology and expertise that is customised for local operat- ing conditions. “With our dedicated African presence, quali- fied experts assist local clients to configure, operate and maintain their equipment for each particular application in the most effi- cient and cost-effective manner,” he says. Pillay adds that the Voith Africa POG division also provides maintenance contracts to in- crease the availability of the equipment, while reducing downtime and unnecessary costs. “A high percentage of our business is after- market, thereby providing clients with the peace-of-mind that we are the market-leading

experts in equipment inspection, repairs, up- grades and overhauls,” he continues.

All newer-generation power stations in South Africa rely on Voith’s high-speed rotating com- ponents to operate. More recently, the Africa POG division was commissioned to custom de- sign a total of 36 Vorecon variable speed plan- etary gears+ for use in coal-fired power plants. The enormous, intricately-designed Vorecons weigh more than 60 tons each when filled with oil, and assist in transmitting around 20 MW of power individually. Pillay points out that this is another example of a highly-com- plex and customised solutions offering. In addition to customising the design of equip- ment, Voith POG also assists plant operators to increase their efficiency by avoiding unfore- seen failures and downtime, currently a major issue in Africa. The Voith Africa POG division focuses on the entire Africa region. Pillay notes that the key markets that have been identified for mea- surable growth are Angola, Algeria, Kenya and Nigeria. “We currently supply a large amount of equip- ment to an offshore floating production, stor- age and offloading (FPSO) oil facility in Angola, in addition to power plants and oil pumping facilities in Kenya,” Pillay concludes. b

In Africa’s climate and terrain, operating con- ditions are challenging. To address this is- sue proactively the Voith Africa POG division supplies critical spares and skilled service engineers for breakdowns or upgrades upon request. In order to add the greatest value to its client base, every order is solution-specific to ensure optimal productivity According to Pillay, the Johannesburg-based POG division has grown significantly since inception. Its success is attributed to a sub- stantial amount of investment in resources and training, to ensure maximum effectiveness. “Voith prides itself on reliability, advanced en- gineering, and longevity of its products. As a result, we are currently in the process of sign- ing reputable agents and distributors to access the entire region,” he observes. Pillay highlights the fact that the Africa POG division also has unlimited access to Voith’s pool of global resources and expertise. “Should a complex challenge arise that the local team is unable to deal with, we will en- deavour to send an international expert onsite to resolve it.”

in 26 countries. In 2014, the Group will pre- sumably achieve a sales figure of more than EUR 18 billion with approximately 72 000 employees. In order to continue to be suc- cessful with innovative products, ZF annually invests about five percent of its sales (2014: around EUR 890 million) in research and de- velopment. ZF is one of the ten largest auto- motive suppliers worldwide. ZF Services ensures that ZF systems exper- tise is carried forward consistently into the aftermarket. With integrated solutions and the entire ZF product portfolio, the business unit guarantees the performance and effi- ciency of vehicles throughout their lifecycle. Driveline and chassis technology by ZF is offered in the aftermarket business using the well-established product brands Sachs, Lemförder, Boge, ZF Lenksysteme, and ZF Parts. With its global service network and portfolio tailored to customer requirements, ZF Services has also become a popular part- ner in the non-automotive sector. In 2015, the company is celebrating its centennial. Originally named Zahnradfabrik GmbH, ZF was founded in Friedrichshafen in 1915 by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH among others. In its early years, the com- pany developed, tested, and manufactured aircraft transmissions. After 1919, the com- pany focus shifted under Alfred Graf von Soden-Fraunhofen, the first Managing Direc- tor and later member of the Board of Man- agement and CEO, to the automotive and commercial vehicle industry. In this sector, the company established itself once and for all as a major technology supplier, registering numerous patents for innovative transmission technology. The first location outside Europe was founded in Brazil in 1958, launching a globalization drive that still continues today. In addition, ZF constantly expanded its range of expertise – also through acquisitions. For instance, in 1984 ZF acquired the majority share in Lemförder Metallwaren & Co. KG, a move which extended the product portfo- lio to include chassis technology. Later, in 2001, ZF took over Mannesmann Sachs AG to strengthen its value creation chain with driveline and chassis components. It adopt- ed the current name of ZF Friedrichshafen AG in 1992. Today’s product range includes driveline and chassis technology such as transmissions, driveline and chassis compo- nents, as well as complete axle systems and modules. ZF products are used in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, construction and agricultural machinery, rail vehicles, and ma- rine applications. The company also focuses on the wind power and electronic compo- nents business. b

ZF SERVICES SOUTH AFRICA introduces the Lemförder brand

W ith more than 13 000 steering and chassis components for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, the ZF Services brand Lemförder, is already a strong and well established partner in the independent spare parts business world- wide – and is now once again markedly ex- panding its footprint into the South African market. From older generation vehicles to recently launched models, ZF Services and so its brand Lemförder has components which demonstrate the innovative power of the ZF Group. Steering and chassis components represent the most important link between the vehi- cle and the road. Control arms, stabilizers, or torque rods, ensure safety, comfort and road holding when driving. Only absolute precision in the design, manufacture and assembly of all components ensures that a commercial vehicle or bus can be safely controlled at all times. The established Lemförder product brand from ZF Services therefore stands not only for OE quality, but also provides extensive technological expertise through its service portfolio that includes training, product de- velopment and support which enables work- shops to easily identify and repair defective parts. Up to 70 steering and chassis com-

ponents may be installed in a single vehicle. As they are safety parts, they are subject to special diligence during design, production, and assembly. Chassis components for trucks by the ZF Services brand Lemförder increase pay- load, reduce fuel consumption, and optimize driving support. In order to ensure safe axle guidance, trucks and buses require torque rods which are also referred to as axle guiding control arms, axle control arms, or, when on the front axle, thrust rods. These parts connect the axle with the frame in a longitudinal, transverse, or diagonal man- ner. The precision products from Lemförder guarantee an accurate axle guidance. This contributes to reducing tire wear. The weight is reduced with torque rods thanks to design optimizations, e.g. through the utilization of casting technology. In doing so, the chassis as a safety part is always the priority for us. Lemförder steering parts have prevailed on the truck and bus market thanks to zero maintenance, low weight, an individual and space-saving design, as well as long service life. The spare parts for the aftermarket also feature this original equipment quality.

CAT ® 12K: A GRADING ICON that delivers

S ucceeding the H-Series model, the new Cat 12K motor grader launched within the southern African market in 2015 continues a proud heritage that can trace its lineage back some 77 years to 1938. This was the milestone that marked the first introduction of the ‘Caterpillar Die- sel No. 12 Auto Patrol’. The machine was renamed as a ‘motor grader’ a year later and a legend was born. Since that time, there has been a contin- ued evolution of the No.12 grader, with the Cat 12K conventionally operated unit being the most recent example. Manufactured at Caterpillar’s Suzhou facto- ry in China for worldwide distribution to Tier II emission standard markets, the Cat 12K sets the next industry standard in its class as a versatile machine for general construc- tion and governmental applications (typically here for gravel road maintenance). In addition to reliability, durability is a key feature, making the Cat 12K a true work- horse designed for decades of performance, given Caterpillar’s second and third life

rebuild philosophy across its earthmoving product range.

through sudden, short-term increases in load, reducing the need to downshift. As a result, the operator can maintain desirable working speeds, which means the work gets done faster. “The Cat C7 engine, direct-drive power shift transmission and load sensing hydraulics work together to ensure the power and precision you need to work in demanding conditions,” explains Barloworld Equipment product marketing manager, Johan Viljoen. (Barloworld Equipment is the Cat dealer for southern Africa.) Important for efficient grading, proportional hydraulic flow provides outstanding ‘feel’ and predicable movements, a standard re- quirement for general as well as final level work. Longer-term, every component, from blade linkage to the long wheel base on the Cat 12K is designed for optimum moldboard control and material movement: an engi- neering legacy that can be traced back to the ‘Auto Patrol’ design that contributed to modern day motor grading. b

A high visibility lift arm design, consistent with that found on the joystick controlled M-Series, is featured on the Cat 12K, a set- up that provides enhanced visibility to the front of the machine for the operator. Operationally, the standard blade width for the southern African market is 4,3 m (14 foot) and the machine has an approxi- mate operating weight of 14 334 kg. This is a powerful and fuel efficient machine, equipped with a Cat C7 ACERT engine – designed and rated to handle tough loads – delivering a net output of 108 kW base power in first gear. The standard variable horse power (VHP) feature enables variable delivery from 108 to 123 kW. The machine’s Power Shift transmission features direct drive and electronic control for smooth, powerful shifts at any speed. High torque output and high torque rise make the C7 engine very responsive. The engine’s lugging capability allows it to pull

FINLAY INTRODUCE DUAL POWER crushing and screening train to Africa

B ell Equipment has just received the first FINLAY dual power crushing and screening ‘train’ on the African con- tinent. This means that African customers now have the flexibility to operate a fully mobile crushing and screening plant that be powered from mains electric or run self-powered if required. This is the first in a number of exciting new FINLAY products that will be introduced to the Southern African market during 2015. The dual power train is a new concept for

Finlay crushers and screeners and compris- es the J-1175 jaw crusher, C-1540 cone crusher and 694+ inclined screen. These three machines are market leaders in their size category with many units already oper- ational across the continent The dual powered crushers are electrically driven, allowing users to run from electrical supply with the aim of giving significant sav- ings on energy costs. These machines are also fitted with an onboard gen-set allowing the operator to move and use the machine

where there is no electric supply and thus giving the flexibility and versatility of current standard models. In applications where a full train is powered by the on-board gen-set configuration the crushers generate sufficient energy to en- able the operator to run the FINLAY 694+ dual power inclined screen for ‘free’ when used in conjunction with the J-1175 dual power jaw crusher. “We are excited by the introduction of these new models to the South African market- place. The crushing and screening models are already well respected and the flexibility of dual power will only enhance their repu- tation with operators in the market. We’ve already had a positive response from our customers and are confident that this will result in firm orders in the near future,” re- marks Paul Chappel, FINLAY Regional Sales Manager. The dual powered FINLAY J-1175 jaw crush- er offers operators the flexibility to power the plant either by mains electric connection or the onboard gen-set power pack configura- tion. Either power option presents operators with significant power, servicing and mainte- nance cost savings in direct comparison to a diesel/hydraulic powered plant. The plant incorporates the robust and re- nowned JW42 high performance electri- cally driven single toggle jaw chamber and a heavy duty VGF feeder to give optimum production in quarrying, mining, demolition and recycling applications. Additional bene- fits include rapid set up time, ease of main- tenance, high reduction ratio, high output capacity and advanced electronic control system. The jaw chamber is hydrostatically driven, which offers operators reversible oper- ation for clearing blockages that may be

experienced in demolition and recycling ap- plications.

The hydrostatic system also provides vari- able chamber speed to suit given applica- tions. Chamber CSS (Closed Side Setting) adjustment is fully hydraulic, and can be changed in a matter of minutes. The dual powered FINLAY C-1540 cone crusher offers operators the flexibility to power the plant either by mains electric connection or the onboard gen-set power pack configuration. Either option presents operators with significant power, servicing and maintenance cost savings. This energy efficient and productive ma- chine incorporates the proven Terex ® 1000 cone crusher with direct electric drive, auto- matic tramp relief and hydraulic closed side setting (CSS) adjustment. The dual powered FINLAY C-1540 can be fitted with an optional patented pre-screen module which allows fines materials to bypass prior to being fed to the crushing chamber. This offers better wear rates in the crushing chamber. The fines materials can also be prepared separately and discharged via the optional on-board side conveyor. The large hopper/feeder has automat- ed metal detection and a purge system to protect the cone and reduce downtime by removing metal contaminants via the purge chute. The FINLAY 694+ dual power inclined screen provides customers with the option of running this class-leading machine by ei- ther diesel or electric mode, depending on the resources available at each site. In terri- tories with wide disparities in quality of fuel or where the cost of fuel is an issue versus electricity prices, the machine will also have particular advantages.

As standard, the FINLAY 694+ dual power uses 2 x 37 kW IE2 Electric motors, which operate at 50 Hz and are suitable for most regions. However, a 60 Hz and/or IE3 set-up can be configured to suit particular regions such as the USA. The intuitive and user friendly electrical and hydraulic system allows the customer to switch between diesel and electric mode at the flick of a switch. The primary operation and control of the machine remain the same regardless of the selected power. It is pos- sible to power this 694+ inclined screener using the onboard gen-set of the J-1175 dual power crusher. This means that oper- ators can essentially run the screener free of charge. The FINLAY 694+ dual power features a large 6.1 m x 1.525 m (20’ x 5’) triple deck inclined screen, giving a total screening area of 28m² to provide efficient screening and high capacity. b

CAT ® 745C SETS THE NEXT BENCHMARK in 41 tonne class ADTs

R olling out to the southern African market from May 2015, the latest generation CAT 745C is a major ad- vance on the previous world leading CAT 740B model launched locally in 2011. It offers a host of new performance features designed to lower owning and operating costs in mining, construction and allied in- dustrial segments. “Tonnes moved per hour and per litre of fuel burned are key drivers to business success in today’s contracting market, and Cater- pillar has made this a key focus during the research and development, and pilot testing phases of the CAT 745C,” explains Bar- loworld Equipment group product and appli- cation manager, Johann Venter. He adds that this includes comprehensive in-field trials in South Africa (Barloworld Equipment is the CAT dealer for southern Africa.) Along with more power and improved op- erational efficiencies, the rated payload on the CAT 745C has increased to 41 tonnes, compared to the CAT 740B’s 39,5 tonne capacity. The CAT 745C has a newly de- signed dump body with a capacity (heaped SAE 2:1) of 25 m³.

Manufactured in Peterlee, England, the CAT 745C will be available alongside the current 725C, 730C and 730C EJ (Ejector) models launched in southern Africa during 2015. Production of the first CAT 745C units at Peterlee commenced from March 2015. Powering the CAT 745C is a Tier II CAT C18 engine delivering a gross power of 381 kW (SAE J1995) compared to the 365 kW CAT C15 power plant installed on the CAT 740B. Driving the CAT 745C is a new CX38 High Density Power Shift (HDPS) transmission with Advanced Productivity Electronic Control Strategy (APECS) and nine forward/ two reverse gears, combined with Electron- ic Clutch Pressure Control (ECPC), Shift Torque Management (STM) with improved Shift Control Logic (SCL), and Part Throttle Shifting (PTS). The CAT 745C features permanent six- wheel drive with four open differentials for optimum traction in undulating ground con- ditions and during steering manoeuvres.

“Together, these advanced features allow smoother shifting and greater acceleration

on grades as torque is maintained through the shift changes,” explains Venter.

Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) has been introduced to further improve ease of op- eration. Working in forward and reverse gears, this feature can now be set to fully automatic in addition to manual control. In automatic mode, the machine manages retarding through a combination of engine brake, gear selection and supplemen- tal application of the service brakes. Two position manual retarding is also retained for more experienced operators. Both ATC and ARC are unique Caterpillar proprietary systems. “ATC was first introduced on the CAT 735B, 740B and 740B EJ in 2011 and has received excellent market feedback from customers,” points out Venter. Additional ease of operation features help to maximise machine efficiency and in- clude Hill Assist (for easy stop/start on grades) and Waiting Brake (which tempo- rarily applies the service brakes during typ- ical loading/dumping/waiting applications). The machine is fitted as standard with the Product Link™ transmitting hardware, en- abling connection via either GSM cellular or satellite to Caterpillar’s online internet portal, VisionLink™ and the CAT Connect telematic suite. CAT Connect technologies offer improvements in three key areas, namely equipment management, produc- tivity, and safety.

Via VisionLink, machine owners can track location, hours, fuel usage, productivity, idle time and diagnostic codes, and make timely, fact-based decisions to maximise efficiency, improve productivity and lower costs. CAT Connect payload technologies like the CAT Production Measurement payload monitoring system will be an option on the CAT 745C, as well as other C-Series mod- els. With CAT Production Measurement, operators can view real-time load weights on an in-cab integrated display and know precisely when target has been achieved. Cab mounted external payload lights signal the loader operator when to stop loading. Payload data can in turn be viewed remote- ly via VisionLink for key information such as loads and cycle counts, and daily totals. “These and other design features translate into increased profit potential for machine owners, positioning the CAT 745C as the new class leader when it comes to all-ter- rain trucking,” concludes Venter. The CAT 745C has a newly designed dump body with a capacity (heaped SAE 2:1) of 25 m ³ and an increased payload of 41 tonnes. b

SCL provides automatic shift selection that is more specific to the desired machine operation, and downshifts when needed for maximum acceleration when increased throttle is applied. PTS allows shifting at lower speeds during part throttle operation. This results in improved part throttle fuel economy, quieter machine operation, and better manoeuvring in reduced speed op- erating conditions. Standard fitment on the CAT 745C is an updated Automatic Traction Control (ATC) system, which leads the market in terms of technology. ATC significantly improves ease of operation by removing all manual trac- tion control decisions from the operator. The system automatically changes the level of inter-axle and cross-axle differential lock en- gagement on the go. This aids in maintaining traction at all times, contributing towards im- proved cycle times and productivity. The ATC system is also fully proportional, constantly modifying and applying the exact amount of torque to each wheel to match changing ground conditions. Furthermore, the proportional ATC system works in harmo- ny with the hydraulic steering system, without compromise in tight turning manoeuvres.

JOEST KWATANI ANNOUNCES NAME CHANGE after stakeholder acquisition

A significant, strategic move has re- sulted in local vibrating equipment manufacturer Joest entering into an agreement with black-owned consortium Vhatsila Holdings to form Joest Kwatani. The agreement sees Vhatsila Holdings acquiring a 30% stakeholding in the com- pany, making Joest Kwatani the first in its class to exceed the requirements of the Mining Charter. As a result of this move and the concerted effort to continue with its programme of pref- erential procurement and skills development, Joest Kwatani has also achieved a Level 3 BB- BEE certification. Two shareholders from Vhat- sila Holdings have been appointed to Joest Kwatani’s board as non-executive directors. Under Gunter Vogel’s guidance, Joest Kwatani has grown over the past 26 years into a ma- jor supplier of high quality vibrating equipment suitable for the harsh African mining environ- ment. According to Kim Schoepflin, managing director of the company, Joest Kwatani has a heritage that is proudly African and it is there- fore fitting that the company has changed its name to one which embodies this credo. “Interestingly Kwa Tani is Swahili for ‘For Ton- nage’. This is appropriate, given the fact that Joest Kwatani has a 39 year track record of designing and supplying high quality custom- ised vibrating equipment, characterised by robust construction and emphasis on contin-

uous tonnage,” says Schoepflin. Part of the company’s heritage is its ongoing commit- ment to overall trans- formation and it will leverage this operating strategy to continue to empower and uplift South Africans. We have a philosophy of identifying talent from within the or- ganisation and have a programme whereby individuals’ skills are developed in their area of potential,

conditions in the world, we engineer our prod- ucts to global best practice standards and as a result we can boast an established footprint on the African continent of screens and other vibrating equipment. In all instances, our prod- ucts set the benchmark for reliability, efficiency and performance,” Schoepflin points out. “Similarly, the Vhatsila Holdings directors and shareholders have strong mining and engi- neering backgrounds, indicating that there is a clear understanding of the industry in which we operate as well as the challenges faced in the sector. They will naturally leverage their expertise and experience to assist us on our continued growth path,” Schoepflin adds. b

allowing them to better their position in the company. This includes the ongoing training of artisans, both at learnership level and above,” says Schoepflin. Showing care for the communities in which it operates is one of Joest Kwatanis’s core val- ues and education remains the key focus of the company’s Social Upliftment Programme. Joest Kwatani facilitates business and admin- istrative skills development for a number of disabled, previously disadvantaged individuals who would otherwise not have access to this type of education.

PMSA LAUNCHES NEW CONCRETE MIXER at Totally Concrete 2015

P MSA sales and marketing manager Quintin Booysen says that the Fiori DBX35 fills a gap in the local market for an affordable and reliable self-loading concrete mixer that offers the user accu- rate measurement without the need for ad- ditional equipment. “It is the ideal self-load- ing mixer for the price-conscious customer, and therefore I am confident of obtaining measurable market share across Sub-Sa- haran Africa,” he adds. The new Fiori DBX35 is designed specif- ically for emerging markets in Africa that require high-quality concrete on demand at a more affordable price. It was unveiled at the Totally Concrete 2015 exhibition at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg in mid-May by PMSA, the largest supplier of concrete brick, block and paving-making machinery and technology in Africa. The Italian-designed and manufactured mix- er forms part of an entire range from Fiori, with a smaller and larger unit available as entry-level machines. To make the DBX35

more affordable, all non-essential parts were removed and certain design aspects adjusted. Fiori’s quality standards have, however, remained uncompromised. Two major design enhancements are the in- troduction of front loading arms and a grab bucket, which replaces the standard bucket found on other Fiori machines. This design change was implemented as a cost-saving benefit for up-and-coming contractors un- able to afford a capital-intensive weighing system for material measurement. “The Fiori DBX35 is the ideal self-loading mixer for customers who have not budgeted for a separate weighing system to measure all aggregates, as the grab bucket allows the user to measure materials more accurately when loading the bucket, which can be filled up to 90 percent capacity. This is not possi- ble with a standard bucket design,” explains Booysen.

including more accurate volumetric loading and reduced loading times, thanks to the positioning and inclination of the drum. Its compact design also results in considerable transportation savings. “Two Fiori DBX35 self-loading mixers can fit into one standard 140 m 3 shipping contain- er, which halves transportation costs when compared to other similar-sized competitor mixers. This is another major value-add in terms of ensuring affordability, without com- promising on efficiency or reliability,” points out Booysen. b
