LECTURE SERIES
On Monday, February 2, at 8:00 p.m., Donald Graham was the long time Publisher of the Washington Post, until he caused it to be sold last year to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. Sitting at the helm of that newspaper and Newsweek Magazine, he has had an incomparable view of the slow, but steady, demise of print journalism and the rise of a digital alternative. He will discuss the ramifications of this shift, and current issues, domestically and internationally, concerning freedom of expression and the press. As the son of the legendary Watergate-era Post Publisher, Katherine Graham and a close collaborator for many years of Warren Buffett, a long time Director and principal shareholder of the Post, Mr. Graham has many fascinating stories to tell and insights to share with us.
On Monday, March 2, at 8:00 p.m., Josh Glazer, a vice- president of Christies, will speak about the commercial art market. It will be different than past programs and quite fascinating to all, whether or not you are an art collector.
On Tuesday, March 24, at 8:00 p.m., we will be visited by David Makovsky of the Washington Institute on Near East Policy. David is an American journalist, who lived in, and reported from, Israel for many years. He recently took a leave of absence from the Institute to become one of Secretary Kerry's principal deputies dur- ing the recent intense, but unsuccessful, Palestinian peace talks. He is now back at the Institute, where he is reasonably free to talk about said talks. Moreover, since the Israeli elections will occur on March 17, we will benefit from his insight as to the election results, as well as other matters affecting Israel.

SECURITY LP Gas Customers - We Need Your Assistance W e need your assistance in helping reduce the number of LP gas leaks in our community. Over the past twelve months we have had approximately 10 LP gas leaks reported. I contacted all the major gas companies providing service to our community and asked them to conduct inspections of all homes with LP tanks in the ground. They advised that in order for this to occur the individual homeowners would have to call for this inspection. Most of the gas leaks found have been adjacent to the pressure regulator under the lid of the tank. Please contact your LP gas provider and officially request an inspection of your tank, regulator and valves. You can also ask them to inspect the connection to the pool heater if you have one. This is another location of leaks. You can find the contact number for your gas provider on your gas bill. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions regarding this request. Security can be reached at the gate house at (561) 622-7800.
Traffic Safety Detail 2014 Holiday
During the November Security Committee Meeting there was a discussion regarding traffic safety during the holidays and the balance between safety and enforcement. The Committee made a recommendation to focus on education during the two upcoming holiday time periods in an effort to improve traffic safety within the community. With this philosophy given as direction, Security developed a plan and established two “checkpoints” within the community where officers were sta- tioned wearing orange “Safety Officer” vests. These locations were Tournament Drive at the intersection of Rivoli Drive and the cart path where they intersect from Verdun Drive, the Fit- ness Center and the Starter Shack.
The officers were instructed to focus on the following safety issues: Overloaded Golf Carts (96)
Underage Drivers of Golf Carts (28) Reckless Operation of Golf Carts (8)
Child Riding on the Lap of Adult in a Golf Cart (33) Pedestrians Walking in the Wrong Direction (86) Pedestrians Walking More Than Two Abreast (28)
Over the 14 day holiday time period the officer’s documented nearly 280 encounters with residents or guests that met the safety criteria that needed to be addressed as established by the Director of Security. The officers attempted to educate the resident or guest during each of these encounters as to the safety issue they observed. There were no warnings or viola- tions issued and the educational effort was based solely on voluntary compliance. Many residents and guests were recep- tive to these efforts when the officers provided them with the safety issue and many complemented the new philosophy and program. Listed below is a spreadsheet of the safety issues that were observed and documented by the “Safety Officers”. Based on these numbers and the overall feedback received by our residents and their guests the Director of Security feels it was a successful effort and intends to recommend this pro- gram for future holiday time periods.
Thank you for assisting in keeping our community safe!
