The roots of EFD induction go back to the launch in 1950 of a universal induction hardening machine by the german company induktionserwärmung Fritz Düsseldorf gmbH (FDF). While FDF was expanding in the 1970s, an induction revolution was taking place in norway, where engineers had figured out how to transistorise frequency converters for induction heating. in 1981 three of those engineers founded ELVA induksjon. in 1983 they unveiled the Minac range of mobile converters. Workpieces no longer had to be brought at great cost to a stationary induction heater – the heater could now go to the piece. in 1991 the managing directors of FDF and ELVA met by chance. They talked… and speculated. FDF was strong in stationary induction hardening machines. ELVA was the agile innovator with a track record in finding new applications for induction heating. What if the two companies got together? in January 1996 FDF and ELVA merged to create EFD induction. And the rest is, as they say, history. Roll-Kraft announces addition of lean manager

FIVES Stein, a designer and supplier of thermal solutions for steel and glass applications, has been awarded a major contract for Indian-based group Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), one of the largest steel makers in the world. The walking beam furnace will be supplied in the Raigarh works of JSPL. This furnace will be unique in its kind – the main feature of this new furnace is that it will be burning 100 per cent blast furnace gas as fuel through regenerative burners. In addition, the furnace will be equipped with backup system for combustion firing fuel oil to run the furnace when BF gas is not available. This furnace will be unique because of the HFO firing backup system in ROLL-KRAFT has announced the addition of Kevin Hartman to the position of lean manager. Mr Hartman has previously held leadership positions in operations at several manufacturing firms. He holds a Six Sigma Green Belt certification. As a member of Roll-Kraft’s management team Mr Hartman will lead and develop the company’s lean initiatives in pursuit of streamlining its processes and scaling the company for growth. His education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Fives Stein awarded key contract with Indian steel maker

Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) is one of India’s major steel producers with a significant presence in sectors like mining, power generation and infrastructure. JSPL and its group companies are headed by Mr Naveen Jindal. The company produces economical and efficient steel and power through backward and forward integration. Linear cage forming tube mill produced OLIMPIA 80 has successfully commissioned in Turkey a linear cage forming tube mill destined to produce square and rectangular tube sections in carbon steel. The line can produce square sections from 30x30 to 80x80mm and rectangular sections from 60x30 to 110x40mm, in a thickness range from 1 to 6mm, with maximum speed of 120m/min. The mill can produce all square and rectangular tubes within the size range, without changing any roll in forming, welding, sizing, straightening and cutting sections. The average time of changing tube dimensions is approximately 15 minutes. The main characteristics of the technology are simplicity and rapidity in changing diameter; easy maintenance; and simplicity in software utilisation. The mill allows the production of both square and rectangular tubes by means of a computerised control able to save production data in recipes that can be easily recalled. It is possible to create a particular shape with different angles, and from the PC the ‘tube flower’ of the tube to be produced can be viewed. Tube OD changing time for the forming section is around 3 to 5 minutes. All the axes are controlled by hydraulic motors with encoder, and the strip feeding is provided by vectorial motor with inverter (closed loop). Olimpia also has other pending orders for similar lines for round and sections in carbon steel and stainless steel, destined for the European market.

With this equipment calibration, the accuracy of the measuring device is verified and documented. With the in-house calibration service, the calibration of devices is performed by a Sikora engineer at the company’s headquarters in Bremen, Germany, or at the specially equipped Sikora subsidiaries. A functional test and basic cleaning is carried out, and the reliability and accuracy of the device are checked. The customer receives a ‘calibration certificate’ that confirms the successful calibration with certified test probes. As a special service, Sikora can provide loan equipment for the time of calibration. For customers with permanently installed equipment or with the need to avoid time losses due to the de- installation and shipping of the device, Sikora recommends the on-site calibration service. The calibration is performed by a Sikora service engineer or by a trained employee of one of the Sikora subsidiaries directly at the customer’s site. A functional test and basic cleaning is carried out and the reliability and accuracy are checked. In addition, the employee checks the installation of the device on-site, maintains the equipment and offers employee training on request.

Sikora also offers device training, and is putting a focus on a calibration service. With the company’s extended service support, customers can choose from a variety of service possibilities, no matter in which part of the world the devices are installed. Continuous galvanising line THE Chinese Pangang Group has given Siemens Metals Technologies an order to supply a new continuous galvanising line for its Chongqing plant. The line will process 450,000 tons of high-strength cold strip per annum for use in the automotive industry.

achievable coating thicknesses of both sides will be between 50 and 350g/m 2 . The scope of delivery from Siemens will start at the coil feed and the entry section with a double payoff reel, followed by a Siemens type LW21 laser welding system with strip centring. Both welding and cutting operations are carried out with laser technology. The laser beam is transmitted via fibre – no mirror is needed. Also, no mechanical shear is required, thus avoiding wear of cutting tools. This will produce a continuous strip, which will first pass into a 16-fold strip looper with a capacity of 430m. The strip will be cleaned in an electrolytic cleaning section, and then heated in an ART (all-radiant tubes) furnace. Hot- dip galvanising will take place in two coating baths, a common one for GI and GA coatings, and one dedicated to aluminising coating. An induction furnace located above

the air wiping system serves for galvannealing. The coated strip will then be tempered in a cooling section. This will be followed by an intermediate looper with a capacity of 280m. After that, the strip will be fed to a Siroll-4Hi temper mill with a roll force of 1,200 tons and a 25-ton tension leveller. The shiftable Siroll Roll Coater will provide additional protection for the coated surfaces against corrosion and fingerprints at the last stage of post treatment. The strip will run through a 400m exit looper before it is side-trimmed and the width measured. This will be followed by an inspection station, in which the strip surface quality is checked. The exit section will consist of an electrostatic oiler, a rotary shear and a single tension reel, as well as coil handling, strapping and weighing machines.

For the first time in a Chinese plant, strips will be able to be optionally hot-dip galvanised with GI and GA coatings or aluminised on a single line. The project is scheduled to be completed by the middle of 2015. Siemens will plan and supply the complete mechanical and electrical equipment as well as the automation for Pangang’s continuous galvanising line in Chongqing. The galvanising line will coat deep-drawing steels, hot-formed and high-strength steels, as well as dual-phase steels with strip thicknesses ranging from 0.5 to 3mm, and widths from 800 to 1,600mm. Polysoude THE new centre of automated welding technologies has opened at CNIITMASH (a part of Atomenergomash group of companies). In market conditions this equipment is necessary. Automated welding does not just reduce NPP’s construction terms, it also ensures the highest quality of welding performance. “CNIITMASH is engaged in welding since 1929,” Yuri Volobuev, deputy general director, director of welding and testing institution, says. “Of course, the technology has made a gigantic step ahead. Methods and consumables of the automated welding will be developed in the new centre, not only for nuclear and thermal power applications. Innovations of such kind will come handy in aviation, space, construction and other industries.” French company Polysoude supplies welding equipment for the centre. “As you know NPP has lots of piping. Until now most of them have been welded manually,” Yuri Volobuev tells. “Automated narrow gap welding of primary coolant circuit, for instance, is two times as faster as manual welding using conventional bevel. One joint is treated manually for 100 hours. Do you imagine scope of economy? Colfax acquires Victor Technologies PRIVATE equity firm Irving Place Capital (IPC) and Victor Technologies have entered into a definitive agreement to sell Victor to Colfax Corporation, a global manufacturer of gas- and fluid-handling and fabrication technology products. The all cash transaction values Victor at approximately $947mn, including the assumption of debt, and is subject to customary closing conditions. Victor is a designer and manufacturer of a comprehensive suite of metal cutting, gas control, and speciality welding products. Italian stainless steel event THE ‘Stainless steels hot news on: regulations – laws – directives – certifications’ event, organised by Centro Inox in partnership with Unsider, will be held in Milan on 29 May. From the point of view of regulations, laws and standards, the world of stainless steel production and distribution is going through an important period, due to the updating, integration and revision activities, which represent a point of reference for those who must be informed on the inclusion of new alloys, those who must buy appropriate materials, and those who want to be up-to-date on physical and chemical characteristics and end uses. A one-day seminar has been organised, aimed at discussing and clarifying the different issues included in the agenda, and in particular the updating status of the laws and regulations referring to the main iron and steel products, and the major current regulation and standard projects, in a period in which new steel grades have been launched and are increasingly used for specialised applications. In addition, the relevance of imports of stainless steel products originating from Far-East countries to Europe should not be underestimated. Problems arising in connection with issues such as non-compliance with international standards can become the cause of claims and counterclaims between suppliers and users, which may depend on misunderstanding or incomplete, incorrect and non-updated information. The themes concerning the directives on structural applications and CE marking will be dealt with, as well as the laws and regulations concerning materials that come into contact with food and drinking water, without neglecting other important and wide-ranging aspects such as certifications and inspection documents. Housed in its own special hall, the press line will be used by Heru for die try-out and optimising, as well as for tests, start-up and alternate production. However, the company will not be producing parts on the line, and so will not be acting as a contract manufacturer. The servo press can be booked for demonstration and training purposes, and a special seminar room with space for 50 people has also been set up. Several bookings for the current year have already been received for the hall, which can also be used for events. A dedicated display area showcases the other systems and process partners.
