THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING A COTTAGE

If you’ve always dreamed of buying a little cottage or cabin nestled in the woods or on the shores of a peaceful lake, you may be thinking now is a good time to go for it. Before you start packing your bathing suit and bug spray, there are a few things you should consider. For example, the lure of a cottage is often to escape the bustle of the city. Remember that remote locations can be harder to access. Are you willing to buy a property you can only get to by boat? What about a property accessible via rural roadways that may not be plowed in the winter? It’s important to

have this all worked out before you make your purchase. Also, because of their location, cottages often don’t have the same services a home in a town or a city would. They may be hooked up to the electrical grid, or they may have solar power. They may also run off a generator. Another service to consider is water. Where does it come from? Is it potable? What about the septic system? Make sure you know what you’re getting into and are aware of any special maintenance or additional costs that come with rural services before you buy.

TRICKY RIDDLES 1. How can you add eight 6's together so that the total adds up to 750? 2. A little girl goes to the store and buys one dozen eggs and, as she is going home, all but three break. How many eggs are left unbroken? 3. Friday, Jason and Jeff went to the store to buy some bread. The total of $12 was divided equally among the friends. Jason paid $4 and Jeff paid $4 as well. Who paid the other $4? 4. People make me, keep me, change me, raise me, even though I can be very dirty. What am I? Courtesy of www.getriddles.com

5 REASONS TO INSTALL A LANDSCAPE SCREEN IN YOUR YARD

If you have a backyard – or if you have only a balcony, consider installing a landscape screen. Here are five reasons to install a landscape screen in your yard. • Privacy. One of the number one reasons for installing a landscape screen is to create a feeling of privacy. If your yard is exposed, or if you just don’t like looking at the neighbouring yard while enjoying your morning coffee, a privacy screen is for you. • Protection from the elements. Whether it’s sun, rain – or even that white stuff – an outdoor screen can provide your yard protection from harsh elements. For example, if you want to create a shaded area for hot summer days, a full-height screen that lets only a little light filter through would be quite refreshing. • Create a separation of space. Perhaps you’d like to define a dining space in your yard. Install a screen – either full height or half, to partition off the area and create a cozy tucked-in feeling while you enjoy outdoor meals. • Add an eye-catching element. Outdoor screens aren’t just practical – they’re also pretty. Screens with details carved into them let light filter through and act as a work of art. • Grow a garden. If you don’t have space for an in-ground garden – or lack the time or skill to look after one, consider a screen that allows for a vertical garden. Not only will it look beautiful when it’s in bloom, but you can also use it to grow edibles like lettuce and herbs. Yum!

SELLING YOUR HOME? CONSIDER HIRING A DESIGNER So, you’ve decided to sell your home, but you know it needs some work before it’s ready to be listed. Most homeowners wouldn’t even think of hiring an interior designer for a home they’re about to sell. However, here are several reasons why hiring a pro is a great idea. First, one of the best reasons to hire a designer is that they see potential where us regular folks just see dull. Sure, you could slap a generic colour of paint on your walls and call it a day, but a designer will know which colours will compliment your existing finishes best, and which will turn potential buyers away. Another major reason to bring in a designer is that they can help you save money in the long run. For example, if your kitchen needs an update, a designer can find you good quality materials and finishes for better prices, which translates to a higher asking price – and a higher selling price. The last reason to consider hiring a designer is that they can save you time. If you need to get your home ready for sale quickly, a designer can help steer you in the right direction in no time flat. They already have all the tools and tricks of their trade and can help bring your home to a state of "wow" in a reduced amount of time. You never know, maybe you’ll enjoy working with them so much you’ll hire them to help with your new home!

3 ALTERNATIVE HOUSING TRENDS When you think of a home, what comes to mind? Perhaps a single-family dwelling with a good-sized yard. Maybe a duplex, townhouse condo. Or maybe you think of the farm you grew up on. The truth is, just like Canada itself – Canadian homes are very diverse. These three alternative housing trends illustrate that home is definitely where the heart is. • Laneway homes. The popularity of laneway homes has spread over the past few years. Smaller homes that are built on existing lots, a laneway home is often a converted garage or even a new structure erected in an existing home’s backyard. Perfect for grandparents, adult children, guests – even renters, laneway homes get their name because they are most often accessed via the back lane. • Co-ownership. Not an alternative home, just a different way of looking at home ownership. Instead of buying a residence on their own or with a partner, people are opting to buy with friends and extended family members. Not only does it help ease the stress of only one or two individuals paying the mortgage, but it also creates a built-in support system under one roof. • Cabins. Cabins may not seem alternative. After all, it’s pretty common to own a cabin or cottage – somewhere you can escape to on weekends, and during the glorious days of summer. However, what if you decide to live in your cabin year round? More and more people are forgoing the “live in the city, vacation at the lake” lifestyle by opting to just live at the lake permanently.

WHY BACKYARD PODS ARE THE NEXT BIG THING If you’ve never heard of a backyard pod, you’re about to be introduced to the latest trend in home offices – even though they aren’t really inside the home! Backyard pods are more like sheds, but instead of housing potting soil and shovels, they house a desk, a computer – and maybe even a coffee station. For those tired of hunkering down with their laptop at the dining table, a backyard office might sound like a little slice of paradise. Similar to the concept of a tiny home, a backyard pod can be purchased ready to go and placed in your yard. Companies like Tiny Room Co. and Urban Pods have been providing homeowners with beautiful miniature spaces – ready to become the birthplace of your next great idea.
