From the Editor…

Opening weekend has now officially kicked off the Clubs 50 th Boating Season! Thank you to all the members who helped work the first weekend. The many activities were a lot of fun, and the clear sunny day for the Flag Raising Event made for a fantastic afternoon. Look inside this issue for the up and coming events, Meat Mania, Ladies Week, Kids Day, Membership Survey, Club Calendar, and Work Schedules. See you on the Island, Brent Malik Director, Publications

Commodores Comments…

We had a fantastic kick off to the 2015 season this past weekend. It was great to finally get back to the island by boat. We had a full house with only a slip or two available all weekend. The bar area was full with good participation starting Wednesday night right through Monday. A huge shout out to P/C Bob and Patti Watson for managing the very busy opening week and for all the work they did to tie up any loose ends left from the work parties this spring. The Flats gang put together a fantastic party for all of us following the general membership meeting. They began decorating Thursday and even had us start the party early with a warm up act during good of the order. Special thanks to that group for all their preparation and hard work. Thank you also to the cast of Gilligan’s Island castaways:

Bob Carnaghi – Gilligan Kim Miedema – Ginger Ruth Durand – Mrs. Howell Al Durand – Mr. Howell Ron Currie – The Professor Shelby Romatz – Mary Ann

On Sunday we had a touching flag raising ceremony followed by lunch and then the Blessing of the Fleet with Father Steve. A well-deserved thank you to the Tiara group for preparing the lunch once again this year. The many improvements that were put in place this year were tested early and came through with flying colors. P/C Watson stated that this was the most comfortable opening week in terms of temperature in the clubhouse they have ever had. The heat pumps were put in dehumidifier mode on Sunday afternoon after the carpets were cleaned and the carpets were dry in only 4 hours.

The audio quality and volume for the meeting was excellent, and the new Point of Sale system was used nonstop. Over $12,000 in gift card sales were loaded this week and the bar sales were fantastic. The ability to load a cash value to your membership card was a feature that was very well liked by the membership.

As P/C Harley Burris stated at the meeting “fasten your seat belts” because the fun has just started. We have many exciting events coming so make sure you don’t miss out.

Vice Commodores Comments…

Well it happened again. The club has opened on time and is in great shape. We are truly so blessed….the Lord has given us the perfect place to unwind and recharge the batteries of life. Although this does not happen on its own or by little magic elves, it took the hard work of more than 40 members each weekend, some working all 6 weekends. So much was accomplished again this year by our members volunteering and putting their unselfish sweat equity into the island, transforming the sleeping beauty into the princess that she is. It was great to see all of the eager help. We even had members in waiting on the island working, before they were even approved by the Board to be members. We do it because it is what we love; it is what lured each of us to join NCYC in the first place. Our club is strong, and has a very bright future. The general membership meeting was well attended, and it was very informative. One of the best highlights was that as noted the debt is now for the first time in a long time down to double digits. We are below the hundred grand mark and we are financially on very solid ground. You can feel the thrust that has developed between the general membership and your Board and Flag. I am proud to serve with such a caring, hard working group of members. The harbor was full. I want to thank the membership for their patience and flexibility to accommodate all of the dockage. We even had boats on the wall. But as always we will never turn a member boat away, we will always make room. The SS Minnow was a cool backdrop by the Flats gang to put on a great party weekend. The over 200 people that ate the pig all will attest that they did a great job bringing in the fun! I am sure I can speak for the membership to say a big thank you to the team for your efforts and hard work.

Mother Nature held out the rain for us to get the Flag raising ceremony completed. It always manages to bring a lump in my throat. It is such a humbling experience to watch, and brings such pride to participate in. Also a big thanks to the Pride of Michigan, their crew and officers for their participation. It is one of the traditions of the club that make us who we are…..The best club on the great lakes! Just when you think you have had a full weekend it time to do the blessing of the fleet. Father Steve came to the island as he has been doing for years and blessed our club and member fleet. I was fortunate to participate last year when Father Steve was asked to bless a pregnant woman and her unborn child in the island walk around, which he did without hesitation. The miracle of birth occurred since that date and this weekend Father Steve had the opportunity to bless the child, how cool that is!

Keep an eye on the club calendar. There are many more great plans for the upcoming weekends this year, DO NOT miss out!

See you next weekend,

V/C Chuck Stroh

Rear Commodores Comments…

I would like to take this time to extend my personal thanks to all of the members who set aside time over the last six weeks to participate in getting the club ready for the Memorial Day Weekend opening. The numerous projects that were planned for this spring, along with the many perennial tasks associated with the club opening, demanded a huge member turnout if we were to complete every one of them before opening. The member participation at the work parties was fantastic, the best that I can recall. The board had high expectations for this spring and the membership did not let us down. Once again, Thank You. The weather we experienced over opening weekend was not the best, yet it was nice to have a warm clubhouse when the lows bottomed out in the 40’s. It was enjoyable to attend a General Membership meeting and not hear someone yell speak up, we can’t hear you. The new POS system was easy to use and the ability to load our membership cards for bar purchases was overwhelmingly accepted. When the time comes for cleaning up, the repaired floor and new sink in the kitchen will make the task much easier. The conversion of Sam’s room from a cluttered office into another updated sleeping room is another welcome change. The turnout for Memorial Day weekend was good, with only a handful of slips left open. The Castaways dinner and party was great and a thanks goes out to those who put on Saturday’s dinner and Sundays lunch. Member participation has been great so far this year. We need to keep it up thru out the remainder of the year. Please make it a point to come out and participate in the many activities being held at the club this summer. RC Pat

Get the retirement youwant.

It’s never too soon to start planning.

Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn those dreams into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them. That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help your money work long enough and hard enough to fund the retirement you envision. LIFEWELLPLANNED. Contact me to get started.

NCYC Cigar Smokers and Cigar Friends Mark your calendar for the 1 ST Annual NCYC Big Smoke! This is a word-of-mouth event to be held Saturday, 6 June, on the NCYC Patio from 1-5 PM.

Cigars will NOT be for sale … Those of us that are Cigar Smokers already have our favorites. Please bring what you plan to smoke and an extra to trade or share in the event some of our Cigar Friends care to give it a try.

To add to the ambiance … E-mail your 5 favorite cigar smoking songs to druma07@comcast.net . A playlist will be compiled and we’ll have great music while we smoke.

And now for the finishing touch …

For only $10 you will get 2 pours of the following in any combination* 1 ½ Oz Pour of BALVINIE Caribbean Cask – 14 Year Scotch 1 ½ Oz Pour of MACALLAN Fine Oak – 15 Year Scotch 3 Oz Pour of DiSARONNO Amaretto with an Orange Slice *While the supply lasts … Served Neat, On-the-Rocks or with an Ice Sphere

THE BALVENIE Caribbean Cask AGED 14 YEARS Caribbean Cask has been matured in traditional oak whisky casks for 14 years, and then ‘finished’ in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. To create the ideal finish, Malt Master David Stewart filled American oak casks with his own blend of select West Indian rums. When he judged the casks to be ready, the rum was replaced with the 14 year old spirit and the wood was put to work adding the final touches. The result is an exceptional single malt whisky with the traditional smooth, honeyed character of The Balvenie, married with notes of toffee and a hint of fruit, with a warm, lingering finish.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE

Rich, sweet and creamy toffee on the nose combines with fresh fruit notes

TASTE

Rounded with vanilla and sweet oak notes, with a fruity character that develops with time

FINISH

Soft and lingering

THE MACALLAN Fine Oak AGED 15 YEARS

The perfect balance of sherry and bourbon seasoned oak casks. A lighter style Macallan with flavours of citrus, vanilla and coconut. The addition of American Oak Bourbon seasoned barrels imparts aromas and flavours slightly drier and more oaky than the American Oak Sherry casks with more pronounced flavours of coconut, but still with the lighter colour and sweetness associated with American Oak.

The breadth, depth and sophistication of the Macallan Fine Oak is simply jaw-droppingly good.

TASTING NOTES

COLOUR Rich straw NOSE Sublime and full with a hint of rose and cinnamon TASTE Intense rich chocolate with a hint of orange and raisin FINISH Lingering with a hint of chocolate, orange and dried fruits VANILLA INTENSE RAISIN ROSE CHOCOLATE SHAVINGS FLORAL SUBLIME CINNAMON DRIED FRUITS ORANGE ZEST

DISARONNO O R I G I N A L E The warm, sophisticated taste of DISARONNO has a lineage dating back to one of the most romantic and creative periods in Italian history - the Renaissance. In 1525, the artist Bernardino Luini, a brilliant pupil of Leonardo da Vinci - was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles in Saronno (Madonna dei Miracoli in Saronno, where the Fresco is still displayed today). To portray the Madonna, he chose as his muse a beautiful local innkeeper. As a mark of her gratitude she prepared for the artist a special gift of a flask full of an amber liqueur. That is how the legend of DISARONNO arose: from a simple gesture of kindness and the unique handmade combination of secret ingredients. Rich warm amber, autumnal gold, deep gold, topaz NOSE Sweet with a strong dominating almond aroma with hints of honey, bakewell tart and marzipan TASTE Soft on the palate with a short, sweet flavour of almond, honey, bakewell tart and marzipan FINISH Thick and fiery with good length, peppery alcohol with a luxurious mouth feel … harmonious TASTING NOTES COLOUR

Member of the Month

Bob Marin was recognized for all of his help with installing the generator. Scott Greenfelder was also recognized for his fixing the leak under the clubhouse.

Commodore’s Comments: Commodore, Brian McEvoy I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone here at the Board table for all of your time and dedication so far this season. All of you have put in countless hours and it is evident how much you care about the operation of this Club and the importance of representing the membership’s best interest. Thank you! Vice Commodore, Chuck Stroh Being on the Board requires that at the end of each year that we do the hard task of assessing our fellow members that choose not to perform their work or pay duties for that year. This is always a sad task, as it shows that we have members that do not feel compelled to give back to the Club that provides such great fun and pleasure to the members. But then I attend the Elite Brigade weekends and I am renewed. I see just how truly blessed we are as a Club. I see the shadows of our founding families hard at work. Just as our founding families were, these member’s DNA show them to be caring, generous, unselfish, hard working, sweat equity, members that with no expectations, come out in droves to give back so that others can get the same enjoyment that they do at the Club, not only for this season but for years to come. To those members I say thank you from the bottom of my heart!! Vice-Commodore’s Comments:

Rear-Commodore’s Comments: Rear Commodore, Pat Carroll Two Elite Brigades down and two more to go. Then we have two regular work parties and the Club is open. Four more weeks and we start another year at NCYC. As Board members, we need to make sure that we contact our member friends and convince them to participate in the work parties. We still have an awful lot to get accomplished in the next four weekends. On Saturday morning when we get to the island, look at the list of what needs to be done, grab some members and attack as many tasks as you can. Let’s make sure that everyone that comes to the island is put to work, we have something for everyone to do no matter what their limitations might be. We can make the island be the showplace that she really is if we as Board members manage and make use of the manpower that attends our work parties. Financial Review Frank presented an update on the financial results through March. Revenues for the month of March were $14,219, YTD stand at $131,538. Expenses for March were $4,654, YTD stand at $33,777. Net income for the month of March and YTD were $9,565 and $97,760, respectively. Cash balance stands at $164,730 at the end of March, and the First Merit loan balance was $107,006 as of March 31. Comcast Agreement Frank updated the Board that he and the Commodore finalized discussions and negotiations with Comcast for a new three year agreement to provide Internet, TV, and phone service to the Island. Included in the new Comcast agreement is a substantially increased internet capability and speed that should alleviate past performance issues that have frustrated members. Based upon the overlap of other nearby systems, and to avoid degradation of the system and ensure privacy of our network for NCYC members only, the WIFI system will be password protected. Further information will be provided to members on the password. During the installation scheduled for April 27, the technicians will decide what equipment relocations or additional equipment needs to be installed to optimize the system capability. With the Comcast agreement, services previously provided by Dish Network and AT&T have been discontinued. The Comcast agreement provides the Club with an Off-Season pricing structure to minimize costs when the Club is closed. Frank and the Commodore also recognized Keith McGregor for his helpful technical input and preliminary work on the project with Comcast. Financial Report Treasurer, Frank Corcoran

Point of Sale (POS) System "Gift Cards" Frank advised the Board that, with the implementation of the new POS system, members will have the option to "load" an amount of purchased credit onto their membership card for usage at the Bar, essentially much like a Gift card. To account for this new feature, future NCYC balance sheets will have an account titled "Gift Cards Outstanding" which will represent the aggregate amount of unused credit on Gift Cards. The Board discussed various operational aspects of the Gift Cards and the Commodore requested that the topic be added to the May Board meeting agenda to finalize certain policy aspects as to their usage. The following Motions were made: Motion: Moved by Randy Pagel to approve the financial report. Second, Ian Blackburn. Motion Carried Motion: Moved by P/C Vestal to allow a member to carryover any unused Gift Card balance to the following year. Second, Kim Miedema. Motion Carried P/C John Anderson With the excused absence of P/C Anderson, the Commodore provided a brief update on ABYA activities. Discussion ensued on accepting ABYA's request to host their annual Spring Dinner Dance on the Island on May 30 weekend. Motion: Moved by Kim Miedema to accept ABYA's request, with a limitation of 40 boats. Second, Ian Blackburn. Motion Carried Correspondence: Secretary Pagel read various administrative correspondence from other yacht clubs requesting approval to visit NCYC during the year. Randy also read a request from a senior member requesting the Board's approval for a permanent exemption from the annual Work Hours requirement due to health reasons. The Board received and read letters from P/C Jim Whyard and Jim Wunderlich. Motion: Moved by Randy Pagel to grant the senior member's request. Second, P/C Vestal. Motion Carried ABYA Report:
