One day, Jesus received word that his friend Lazarus was sick. When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it."

Now Jesus loved Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. Yet, he waited two days before telling his disciples,

4

5

“Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

The disciples didn't understand that Jesus meant Lazarus had died. So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe.”

6

7

When the disciples and Jesus got to the town where Lazarus and his sisters lived, they found out that he had already been in the tomb for four days and that many people had gone to the home of Martha and Mary to comfort the girls.

8

9

When she heard that Jesus was on his way, Martha ran to meet him.

Lord," Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."

10

11

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will come back to life." Martha answered, "I know he will at the last day."

12

13

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

14

15

"Yes, Lord' she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."

16

17

Then Mary came. She fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and others crying as well, he was deeply moved in his spirit and troubled. "Where is he?" Jesus asked.

18

19

Jesus cried as they led him to the tomb. Everyone saw how much Jesus loved Lazarus.

20

21

As Jesus came to the tomb, he said, “Take away the stone."

22

23

But Martha said,” Lord, by this time there is a bad smell, for we buried him four days ago!" Then Jesus just said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

24

25

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and prayed, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."

26

27

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and the burial cloth around his face.

28

29

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes. Let him go!"

Who had ever seen such a thing? This man, Jesus, had the power of life and death! He was not an ordinary man! He was the Son of God! God the Father gave Jesus, His Son, great glory on that day.

30

31

That day many saw and understood that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God! They had come to comfort two sisters who were sad at the death of their brother, but now, they left filled with joy and amazement at what Jesus had done!
