ALL THE MEN University of San Diego : .. 1965

Printed by GLENBAR LITHO San Diego

Each yearbook which is produced has a philosophy which in the mind of the editor and staff justifies its publication. This year the staff has grasped a tenet expressed by Andre Malraux that "The artist is not the man who creates, but the one who feels," as its philosophy. We have attempted to capture the University through our eyes insofar as we have edited the variety of photographic scenes which are presented. However, we seek not to impart our feelings in the choice of pictures, rather we wish to evoke from you a personal feeling, a private mental recreation of what our University has meant to you throughout the past year. There has been no attempt to establish a theme for this book, for there is no phrase or single word which captures the year in itself. Rather we have chosen a mode of presentation which we feel presents the University in· all of its aspects. Utmost in our minds is the representation of these men and their companions in the environment of the University of San Diego. We have in the past year lived together, worked to– gether, enjoyed ourselves together, and prayed together ... all in order that we might better realize the role of a University Man. In short we have written a story ... a story worth telling ... a story worth remembering.

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL

lnterfraternity Council ... Bob Guiltinan (ADG), Bob Ramos (PIKE),Joe Martinez (ADG), IFC President, Jim McGreevy (PKT), Fred Carbone (PIKE), Bob Connell (PKT).

The inter-Fraternity Council has done much this past year in reaching its goal of unifying the fraternity men on campus. Each man takes great pride in his fraternity · but in so doing he must not neglect his foremost allegiance ... The University of San Diego. In promot– ing this co-operation among the fraternities the IFC has successfully sponsored such activities as the IFC Boat Dance, the IFC Dance at the Lark, and the co-ordination of Greek Week activities. Under the leadership of Rob– ert Ramos and Jim McGreevy this group has done a commendable job.

"I wanta hold your hand"

"We've played the toughest independent schedule in Cali– fornia, bar none." With this short phrase, Coach Phil Woolpert summarized the most successful basketball season in University history which had closed only minutes before when the Toreros had gained that long sought after 15th victory. That fifteenth win for the season seemed like it might not come when after winning game fourteen, the Toreros dropped four consecutive contests before facing Chapman College in the season finale and there stopping the Chapman club on a 65-61 count. The University season was fairly well a sea-saw affair, with both the longest win streak, and the most lengthy losing streak numbering four. After starting the year with an 83-78 victory over highly re– garded Pepperdine, the team dropped games to Los Angeles State and Loyola, before returning to defeat Long Beach State. However the second game with long Beach saw John Rambo, Olympic high jump medalist lead the visitors to an 85-75 victory. Following a loss to Whittier the Toreros entered the Cal Western tournament with a season record of 2-4. However, the tourney gave the team an opportunity to consolidate which they did by posting victories over Southern Utah, 69-58, and Cal Western 43-42 for the college division championship in this tournament. On the third eve of play, the Toreros faced the Armed Services division winner, Phibpac and scored a 68-53 victory to take the tournament at all levels. Cliff Ashford led the team scoring 24, 12, and 17 points respectively in each of the three contests. A three game jaunt through Montana was successfully handled as the Toreros slashed Carroll College 70-53, slipped by University of Montana 68-67 and were defeated 68-63 by Montana State College. Upon returning to their home court, the Toreros found them– selves preparing to host their own tournament ... a tournament for which Homecoming activities were scheduled. With a definite desire to please the alumni, the Toreros dis– posed of Cal State at Fullerton 87-67 in their first game, and then went on to knock over hapless Cal Western 68-52 which was losing its second tourney in less than a month to the Toreros. Days later, the team played in their third tournament ... though they were not quite so fortunate as they had been in the previous two. Their first contest against Chapman provided them their season high in points as they defeated the Panthers 101-91.

The final game of the tournament was won by Cal Poly of Pomona when they completely demolished the Toreros 75-47. The tourney loss was quickly forgotten , for the next Torero game was to pit the University team against cross-town rival and constant tormentor San Diego State College. That game started at 8:15 in Petersen Gym and just a little over two hours later, including two overtime periods, the Uni– versity of San Diego basketball team left Petersen Gym with an 89-85 victory. Thus the Toreros served notice to the city that they were now and would be in the future a power to be reckoned with. Smiles sang out the words "We won," and every Torero on the hill or in alumni circles stood just a bit taller, thought just a little bigger, felt just a little better . .. for now it was their turn to claim victory over a foe which had twice conquered them in the past. Somewhat fatigued from the previous night's game, the Tor– eros fell before Pepperdine 96-71 , but returned to stop three foes in a row including Cal Western, UC at Santa Barbara, and San Fernando State. It was at this point with a 14-7 record that everyone started looking forward to that fifteenth win .. . a new school record. With five games remaining, the probability of fifteen wins was conside red a sure thing, and talk turned to the possibility of 17 victories and possibly more. In their fi rst attempt at the magic number, the Toreros were stopped by Cal Poly of San Luis Obispo 92-84. This was followed by a loss to Cal Poly of Pomona, 50-47, which was in turn fol– lowed by a crushing and unexpected defeat by thrice-beaten Cal Western. With two games remaining chances for fifteen wins became an even bet. In bid four, Santa Clara tripped the Toreros 83-78 ... and one game remained. February 20 . . . USO Gym . .. vs. Chapman College. The scene was set, the team was ready, the fans were hopeful, almost desperately so, and the game began. Behind a well-balanced attack, including a 10 point effort by Matt Malerich the Toreros jumped off to a 33-21 half time lead. From this point, Lymond Williams with an 11 point second half and Alan Fay with nine led the way as the visiting team failed in an all out effort to foil the Toreros. They had waited long and they had waited patiently, but now the team had its fifteenth win .. . the first Torero squad to do so. And with the yelling and shouting over . .. came the recogni– tion to the men who had worked so hard to see this day come about. First to the Seniors who closed their careers the "best way" ... Lymond Williams, Mark Teissmann, Larry Moyer, and Ken Kullberg . . . they remembered their dismal sophomore year, an even season record their junior year, and now a 15-11 mark, a goal worked for, a reward earned. For the others-Ashford, Malerich, Yavorsky, Verlasky, Wo– jdowski, Fe rree, Bickerstaff, Fay, Price-there are still the sea– sons to come. Next year, and perhaps the following for some ... and always with the thought that last year it was fifteen , how many this year. How many?
