What We Love About…

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO, SEE, HEAR, AND TALK ABOUT THIS MONTH History:

Important Dates to remember:

11/1 - All Saints' Day 11/2 - Daylight Saving Time Ends 11/4 - Election Day 11/11 - Veterans' Day In November 1919, Presi- dent Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the Armistice Day to honor veterans of the World War I. In 1938, 20 years after the war ended, the Congress made the day a national holiday, and then in 1954, changed the day's name to Veterans Day to remem- ber and to honor veterans of all wars.

In the original Roman calendar, November was the ninth month of the year. It got its name from the Latin word "novem" which means nine. However, it became the eleventh month when the Romans added in January and February to the start of the year. Throughout much of history, November has often been thought of as a somber month because it signaled the start of winter. People would spend the month storing up their harvest and pre- paring their food and homes in order to survive the winter.

Historical names:

Roman: November; Saxon: Blotmonath; Germanic: Nebelmond (Fog month)

11/27 - Thanksgiving Day

In 1621, the first Thanks- giving was celebrated in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Fun facts about November It is the last month of the Fall season. November in the Northern Hemisphere is similar to May in the Southern Hemisphere. Elections are held in the United States on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The third Thursday of November is the Great American Smokeout. Smokers are encouraged by the American Cancer Society to stop smoking on this day. Some Christian churches celebrate All Saint's Day on the first day of November and All Souls Day on the 2nd. American football is the main sport watched in the United States during this month. Most, if not all, of the leaves have fallen off the trees by the end of November.

Tennis Clinics have started!

MEN’S TENNIS CLINICS Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. A good workout for everyone!! Everyone is welcome!! T ennis Tip Well, it is October Halloween month, so let’s try and scare your opponents with your great new tennis shot! Serve up the middle!! The down the “T” and body serves are the most important serves in doubles. Since the height of the net is lower in the middle, these serves should improve your first serve percentage. Most important serves, hit to these spots, take away angles from the returner. This gives your partner more chances to poach and allows you to serve and volley without having to stretch and dive for wide angles. It’s a good idea to mix in a wide serve every once in a while to keep your opponents off balance, but don’t worry about being too predictable on your serve in doubles. If you hit these two spots consistently and with depth, your opponents won’t be able to burn you! Go out and prac- tice that serve and scare your opponents with an ACE! We look forward to seeing you on the courts!! Don’t forget to attend our Welcome Back Tennis Cocktail Reception on NOVEMBER 15th, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

A fun and happy group so come have some laughs and there will be no saying sorry just lots of laughs and a good workout.
