Scan Systems celebrates 30 years Scan Systems is celebrating 30 years of servicing the OCTG industry with its most recent innovation, ESP (enhanced signal processing). The company released the program commercially last year after spending six years in research and development. The software, along with electronic upgrade advancements including sophisticated algorithms and newly designed sensors, has advanced EMI technology. (electric discharge machine) specifically designed to introduce artificial flaws in metal products. In the late 1980s the company started commercially offering the EDM Notch Master unit. At the same time another team within the company was working on two products for pipe service operations. inspection and reporting of OCTG materials. A real-time inventory control software, TDSW allows customers to access up-to-the-minute changes in the OCTG material within their facility. With Scan Systems’ roots being in the pipe inspection business, it has a group of engineers and support staff that develops, manufactures and supports new OCTG pipe inspection equipment and technologies. PITCO™ (Pipe Inspection Technologies Company) manufactures advanced EMI equipment and also maintains an extensive inventory of replacement parts, supplies and equipment. PITCO also maintains a fleet of service vehicles manned by experienced technicians.

“We are passionate about research and development and have a long-standing tradition of asking how do we make things better, more efficiently and just how far can we push the envelope?” said Matt Rutledge, vice president and general manager at Scan Systems.

In 1990 Scan created TDS (tubular data system), a PC-based software system for OCTG inventory management and control within pipe service companies. As specialised inventory control and business management software, it was specifically designed to manage and monitor the storage, handling,

Once engineering design and necessary permitting is in place, along with procurement of materials, the project’s construction schedule allows for a single site to be completed in as little as one to two weeks, or as much as several weeks, depending on the site specifics. More than one site can be improved simultaneously. “AbTech is eager to begin construction and looks forward to ground breaking, as the intent is to complete installation at the selected sites before the first frost sets in,” commented Glenn Rink, CEO of AbTech. “It is encouraging to observe this project is moving ahead and that we have passed this milestone in completing Phase One with the first 14 sites identified for improvement.”

The first phase of the project began in October 2013, but was significantly delayed due to circumstances beyond AbTech’s control. The planned timeline for the overall Nassau County project had a cushion built-in. Consequently, with the project now moving forward, these delays are not expected to prevent the targeted completion of installation by first frost this autumn, subject to timely receipt of permits and other regulatory processes. The work during the first phase relied heavily on information received from the county, to evaluate 60 sites for improvements. The gross domestic product in China has been growing for more than 20 years now, although, in comparison to the previous year, growth was a little less in the first quarter of 2014, with an increase of 7.4 per cent. Simultaneously to this growth, the demands of the end users, in regards to the quality of the products which are being produced, are growing too. For this reason, hose and tube manufacturers have to improve the product quality, to stay competitive in the market. Another issue is the increasing costs for raw materials and personnel in China. A wise manager invests into reliable devices in order to reduce costs and to ensure quality. In your opinion, which segments within the hose and tube industry in China offer the greatest potential in the future? In 2013, the percentage of aluminium multi-layer pipes produced in Asia grew to 55 per cent, in comparison to 48 per cent in 2010. I think that there will be continuously high demand for multi- layer pipes in the future, especially for building installations. For that application, we offer the X-Ray 6000. Furthermore, China has been the world’s largest automotive market since 2010. For this industry, I can also see high demands for high quality tubes, for instance for climate, fluid and charge air hoses.

What is your impression of CHINAPLAS 2014, and could you give us your conclusion for the show? I am very satisfied about the outcome of the exhibition. Besides many existing customers, we welcomed interested visitors and prospective customers at our exhibition booth. We had plenty of intensive professional discussions about our technologies, as well as developments and trends for the hose, tube and plastics industry. Overall, CHINAPLAS was very successful for Sikora. In comparison to last year, we could note an increase in visitor numbers of 41 per cent,

NSF expands plastic pipe testing capabilities

NSF International has served as a global provider of testing and certification for the plastic pipe industry for nearly 50 years. It developed the American national standards for pipes and other products that treat or come into contact with drinking water, and certified more than 60,000 products to these standards. In 1990, the US EPA replaced its own drinking water product advisory programme with these NSF standards. NSF’s expanded capabilities include oxidative resistance testing; hydrostatic design stress (HDS) testing; slow crack growth (SCG) validation/rapid crack propagation (RCP) testing; and testing for large diameter plastic pipe (up to 24" in diameter) at elevated temperatures.

health effects testing and certification for the global plastic pipe industry.

NSF International has acquired the laboratory portion of Jana Laboratories Inc, an engineering consulting and laboratory testing firm that serves the global water and plastic pipe industries. Jana Laboratories’ 14-person laboratory staff and 20,000ft 2 laboratory in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, will be renamed NSF Janalab and will become part of NSF’s global network of ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. NSF Janalab includes the 4,000ft 2 Advanced Pipe Test Facility II, which it claims has the largest oxidative resistance stress testing capacity in the world, as well as significant hydrostatic performance stress testing capacity. These capabilities, along with NSF International’s existing global laboratory capabilities, combine to make NSF a major provider of performance and

Jana will retain the consulting and training portion of its business under the name Jana. “The increased demand for plastic pipe has led to a greater need for state-of- the-art testing capabilities and technical expertise to protect public health,” said Kevan P Lawlor, president and chief executive officer of NSF International. “Both NSF International and Jana customers will benefit from more cost efficient and streamlined health effects and performance testing services for plastic pipe, including highly specialised tests for oxidative resistance, hydrostatic design stress testing and large diameter pipe testing. The acquisition also provides clients additional R&D capability and independent consulting resources through Jana.”

Tata Steel contract to supply pipes to Subsea 7

already do together on a global scale, demonstrating the value of Tata Steel in today’s oil and gas industry.” Phil Cran, Subsea 7’s category director for group supply chain management, said, “This global frame agreement reinforces the strong cooperation between Subsea 7 and Tata Steel, which has been developed over a period of multiple successful project deliveries. Subsea 7 fully expects this collaborative relationship to continue successfully in the future.” Tata Steel is Europe’s second largest steel producer, with steelmaking in the UK and Netherlands, and manufacturing plants across Europe. The company supplies products and services to markets that include construction, automotive, packaging, rail, lifting and excavating, energy and power, and aerospace.

Consisting of four separate projects, the latest contracts are believed to be worth in the region of £10mn, and will see Tata Steel supply in excess of 55km of pipe weighing more than 9,000 tonnes. As a supplier of products and services to the oil and gas industry, Tata Steel will supply around 28km of carrier pipe, more than 27km of sleeve pipe, girth welding and triple jointing, and the application of glass flake epoxy pipe coating. Welding and coating will take place at the company’s offshore processing centre in Hartlepool, UK. Tata Steel’s exploration and production commercial manager, Richard Broughton, commented, “Our work with Subsea 7 over the years has been extensive, particularly in the North Sea oil and gas industry, which has become an increasingly important market for us. The new framework agreement will extend the work our companies market. Steel pipe is dominant in oil and gas applications due to its low cost, durability and compression strength.” The high level of drilling activity and the efforts of oilfield service professionals to increase the size and scope of the USA’s network of transmission and distribution lines will drive gains. Plastic pipe demand is anticipated to rise at the most rapid pace of all materials, advancing 8.7 per cent annually until 2018. Growth will be spurred by the increasing use of plastic pipe at the expense of such materials as steel and concrete. In such applications as potable water and sewer and drainage, plastic pipe will increasingly be specified by consumers trying to reduce maintenance and replacement costs. Rebounding building construction expenditures will spur demand for plastic pipe used as conduit, gas distribution, and drain, waste and vent pipe. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was the leading plastic resin

Tata Steel has signed a global framework agreement with Subsea 7, a contractor in engineering, construction and subsea services to the offshore industry, which will formalise a 25-year working relationship between the two companies. The long-standing partnership, which has seen four multi- million pound North Sea contracts signed in the last 12 months alone, is cemented by the new agreement.

used to make pipe in 2013 and will remain so in 2018. PVC pipe is used in such applications as potable water distribution, sanitary sewer, conduit and agriculture. Demand will benefit from the material’s durability and resistance to degradation. High-density polyethylene (HDPE), which accounted for the second largest share of plastic pipe demand in 2013, is expected to see the strongest gains through to 2018, boosted by the use of HDPE pipe in sewer and drainage, potable water and natural gas distribution applications. HDPE pipe offers such advantages as durability and corrosion resistance.

US demand for pipe is expected to rise 7.3 per cent per year to $63.5bn in 2018. Gains will be driven by strong growth in crude oil and natural gas activity, as pipe is used extensively in drilling and oil and gas pipeline applications. Demand will also be supported by a projected rebound in building construction expenditures. Increasing housing completions and strong interest in kitchen and bathroom renovation projects will boost demand for drain, waste and vent pipe, while growth in non-residential building construction will spur demand for conduit. These and other trends are presented in Plastic & Competitive Pipe , a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc. According to analyst Matt Zielenski, “Steel accounted for the largest share of pipe demand by value in 2013 with 62 per cent of the total, supported by its use in the large oil and gas

would not damage the freshly coated surface. Finally, train wagons were loaded with System88 for a durational test of the system in practice. As a result the system was approved by TÜV Nord in 2005. Since 2005 System88 has been implemented in the pipeline industry, and over 10,000 trains and trucks have been equipped with the adjustable transport system. Every five years the tests are repeated to guarantee safety during long-term use. Dhatec started to extend its logistic programme with Pipe Stop, in 2009, for storing pipes in the range of 8" to 150", and its latest development – the Pipe Carrier Premium (2013), suitable for both transport and storage of small diameter pipes between 4" and 20". The systems are based on the same quality standards and share the following advantages with System88: reliable transport and/or storage system; adjustable to a range of sizes; each pipe is stably nested, with sideways support; safe for pipe and coating; reusable and highly durable; and weather proof.

After establishing itself in the oil and gas industrywithpipe-endprotection,Dhatec started in 2002 with the development of a safe and efficient transport system as an alternative to traditional wooden supports. The patented design of the adjustable transport system is claimed to eliminate the disadvantages of other support systems. System88 consists of a zinc plated steel profile on which LDPE blocks can be positioned that are secured with locking pins. Due to the wedge-shaped blocks, pipes are supported sideways, and risks for deformation of the pipe are reduced. Each pipe is blocked separately, and finite element analysis shows almost four times less displacement and almost two times less stress compared to a situation where pipes are supported by a (wooden) beam. During an extensive testing phase of multiple years, the advantages were proven in practice. Collision tests between train wagons showed that the frictional resistance of the blocks is satisfactory. Tensile tests on the block proved the quality and strength of the PE compound material, which is guaranteed for five years. Coated pipes with a temperature of 80°C were loaded on System88 to prove that the blocks

For over 20 years Dutch company Dhatec has been working on a research and development programme that keeps pipes in optimal condition during logistics of line pipes. Several solutions have emerged during the years to improve safety of the logistic process, including System88, Pipe Stop and Pipe Carrier Premium. Dhatec has studied the supply chain of pipelines in detail. During each step in this logistic trail there is a risk of damage to both the pipe and its coating layer. Dhatec isolated dangerous situations during transport and storage, and this resulted in the creation of solutions that safeguard the quality of the pipe and improve the process in terms of efficiency and safety.
