From the Editor…

Here we are, Year 2014 – as we let the holiday season of 2013 sail past us, I want to wish all the NCYC members a healthy and prosperous New Year! As your new Director of Publications & Beacon Editor, I look forward to servicing the club. In this role, I am the voice and bulletin board for the North Channel Yacht Club membership. If there is ever any news, information, or comments a member would like to share or post – please just let me know? I want to thank P/C Don Vanover and his wife Barb for the wonderful leadership and guidance they gave the club last year! Thank you to Greg Brigman, for his excellent work in Publications last season. I greatly appreciate the training and support you have given me in handing over the publications torch. There is a tremendous amount of learning in this role, but I am up for the challenge (...G.B., stay close to your phone…ha, ha). I am excited to stand next to another great team of elected Flag Officers, Board of Directors, Appointments and Committees. I wish Commodore John Anderson and his lovely Lady Beverly, best of luck in leading NCYC in 2014 – you will do a fine job! Plus, you will have a strong team supporting you all the way.

In closing, I hope all the members have a safe and sound winter season – and let’s keep thinking spring!

Wishing you all the best,

Brent Malik Director, Publications

“T’was the Night before Christmas and all Through the House” …. And literally, as of this writing, it is the Night before Christmas. A wonderful time of the year in my opinion. It lends pause to reflect on this years’ past and give thanks for all that we were blessed with. Family, friends and good times that we’ve enjoyed. The Joy of a newborn … the Sorrow of a loved ones’ passing. All in this cycle of Life. Then in its’ debut, the New Year challenging us with the prospect of starting anew. A new beginning … a new determination for better times ahead. A chance to make a difference in our life and the lives of others. So rejoice! Hold your family close and give thanks for our blessings. Look forward to a brighter year ahead!

, North Channel Yacht Club. More than a Club … it’s a Family. A Past Commodore of whom I have a great respect has been heard to say “ … in joining this Club, your life will be changed forever”. How true that statement. If you allow yourself to get involved in the activities and meet and mingle with its’ members the essence of the Club transforms your experience into more than just a social pastime. I am both proud and humbled to be taking the reins of Commodore for this coming season. Looking back, there has been greatness and achievement in each and every Commodore that has led this Club throughout the years. Every One! The bar is high and the standards set. I will meet and exceed your expectations. That is my Commitment to you. With that, I would hope that you will be there with me. Experience the events held for your entertainment. Share the meals prepared for your nourishment. Enjoy the companionship of fellow members partaking in what we all worked so hard to achieve. My goal at year’s end is to pass stewardship on to the next Commodore with NCYC on sound financial and social footing, even better than was received. A progression of success built upon year after year. And so Life with NCYC continues. Even in off-season there’s things to do to keep in touch with your friends at North Channel. The Annual Ski/Snowmobile Outing at Shanty Creek Resorts the last weekend of January. If you’re still in town looking for excitement and adventure, that’s the place to be. Nearby, we have the North Channel Bowling League in full-swing. Once a month, I believe it is. If you’ve missed sign-up on a team, stop on by to say “Hi”. It’s always good to share part of a Saturday afternoon with friends. Lastly, if you’re not busy on January 18 th , I would hope to see you at the Commodore’s Ball. I would be honored to have you celebrate with us, this gala event. In closing this article, I would like to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Keep close your family and friends. Be thankful for the treasures that we’re blessed with. Most importantly, make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others.

Let The Good Times Roll, Commodore John Anderson

Renee and I would like to wish each and everyone of you a Happy and Healthy New Year! We sincerely hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas. I would like to congratulate our outgoing Commodore Don Vanover and his wife Barb for all they have done in 2013. I would like to welcome our new board members Frank Corcoran, Randy Pagel, Brent Malik, and Brian Malik and thank outgoing directors Diane French, Greg Brigman, and Kim Miedema for all their time and effort over the last nine, three and one years.

The celebrations are not over yet, it is time for more festivities as we welcome Commodore John Anderson and his Lady Bev at this year’s Commodores Ball on January 18 th , plan on joining us and your friends for a great time, see you there. Really, I plan on making it to the ball this year! If you have family members or friends that have the work ethic and level of commitment to be good members, then contact them and have them put in a membership application. We had great growth last year, but we have room for more and a full membership makes for a healthy club. Please consider volunteering for an Event, Week Manager, or Weekend O.D. this season. Your club is a working club and everyone’s involvement is crucial to our fun and success. We will have various projects and tasks to complete in 2014 and we look forward to working with all of you this year. As always, thank you for all of your support. It is an honor serving on your flag and I look forward to an excellent year working with an outstanding incoming Flag and Board of Directors.

V/C Brian McEvoy

I hope that everyone had a fun, safe, and festive New Year celebration. The New Year opens the next chapter in my long list of experiences at North Channel. As I looked back at past January articles, I see the positive changes that we have experienced in 2013 as a club. The concerns over our financial soundness no longer needs to steal undue attention from the basis that our club was founded under, fun, camaraderie, and boating pleasure.

We had a great year in 2013 financially, paying down the debt and positioning ourselves through the large increase in membership to focus on growth and making improvements to our club and island. I want to thank Don Vanover, our newest PC and his wife Barb for a great year in 2013. Sandi and I had loads of fun on the island and rendezvous’ last year, thank you to Greg and Yvonne Murray! We made many new friends with the new batch of members that 2013 brought. I wish John Anderson and his wife Bev the best in 2014. Please help me show our support for them, starting by attending the 2014 Commodores Ball. Let’s make this the best year possible. I hope that each of you remember that at the core of NCYC is our volunteering, sweat equity, hard working membership. I look forward to sharing time with you at the elite brigade activities and work parties that are so important to open up our beautiful island and club house.

I am looking forward to the countdown to my 2014 launch date, hot sun, deep water and the sound of the bell.

AMessage From ChaplainArt Brooks…

On December 13 th , Russ Adams’ mother passed away as the result of a stroke.

P/C Tom McHughs’ father, Thomas J. McHugh, age 81, peacefully passed away on December 21 st . A memorial mass will take place on January 4, 2014 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Gaylord, Michigan. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated during this difficult time.

Any support the NCYC membership can offer these families would be appreciated during this time of their loss.

“To our NCYC extended Family, The Brooks family would like thank so many members who sent cards of encouragement after the death of Sue’s mother, Gertrude Murray. During a time of grief, it is so comforting to receive expressions of sympathy. Thank you sincerely.” Sue and Art Brooks

As a New Year begins, the reading below seems like a great resolution to follow:

Making Friends

We have so many friends in life That may not be close at all. To find the love in those we meet I feel this is my call. It’s so nice to see a smile For some little things you say. You may help to change a life For maybe just a day.

As we go along the while, It’s fun to watch an eye, To see the twinkle of a soul As we pass them by.

At the end of the day, recall The hearts you may have cheered. To reap the fullness of the act Is when His love is near.

By James Joseph Huesgen

Happy New Year to you all !!!

Outgoing message…

Hello, and welcome First Mates and guests to our annual Christmas Celebration!

Thank you for taking the time to spend a part of your holiday season with us, and also for supporting the charity the First Mates have chosen to donate to this year, The Children’s Hospital Toy Drive . A big thank you to Diane Marten for organizing this year’s Christmas Party. When I joined the First Mates Board in 2009, I could not think past the position I had been elected for – The Treasurer. Those 3-years flew by, and then I knew I would like to step-up and become your President. I knew there would be many tasks to be done when I served, but I never could have imagined the support and sense of pride I’d have during this past year. This never could have happened without the great group of women that served on the Board alongside of me, and also the many other women who stepped-up to help serve, prepare, and clean-up at the many functions we had held. It is spectacular when so many ladies get together and do what needs to be done! Thank you everyone! Thank you to my 2013 Board of Director Members: Kathy Bell, Yvonne Murray, Diane Marten, Marie Pepin, Cathy Criner, Cathy Jarvis, Jill Romatz, Cheryl Moore-Swatosh, and Renee McEvoy.

Thank you to the membership for your support and contributions. The First Mates always come together…“just ask and they will be there!”

Thank you to those ladies who have served in the past, the ones leaving us this year, the ones continuing, and the ones coming onto The Board next year. All of you are what it takes to keep the First Mates going and accomplishing all the things that we do.

I am proud to turn over the gavel to our 2014 President – Kathy Bell. I’m looking forward to many great things in 2014.

Thank you again,

Sandi Stroh Past President – First Mates
