The September Issue Welcome to the latest issue of Tube & Pipe Technology magazine. This issue we have an in-depth feature on tube mills and roll forming and take a look at the EMO Hannover show and Tubotech 2013. We also have two technical articles – OTO SpA discuss tube mills and Schwarze-Robitec write about some of the latest developments in the science of tube bending. I will soon be heading to TuboTech in São Paulo, Brazil, for the second time in just a few weeks and it will be interesting to see how the country has evolved even just in the past two years as Brazil’s growth as a major international power appears to continue at a rapid pace. Of course, some of the excitement surrounding next year’s FIFA World Cup and the Olympics in Rio in a couple of years has been dampened by the recent riots but this is still a very exciting time for the country, and hopefully the people of the country will come to an amicable agreement with their leaders. I found it a charming country that I look forward to visiting once again so please do come and pick up a copy of the latest magazine if you are heading to Brazil.

Planning for EuroBLECH 2014 THE next EuroBLECH will take place from 21 to 25 October 2014 at the Hanover Exhibition Grounds in Germany. As part of the marketing campaign for EuroBLECH 2014 the exhibition organisers, have presented a fresh design for the show. The advertising campaign features a new exhibition logo, which is designed to be more recognisable and features a precisely cut sheet metal-style appearance. Visitors said they would happily return to EuroBLECH in 2014

As one of the leading trade exhibitions for the sheet metal working industry, EuroBLECH hopes to reflect technological advancements in the industry and thought it was time to also adapt the logo to a new era of sheet metal working technology. “In order to guarantee the brand recognition we kept EuroBLECH’s distinctive purple colour,” said Nicola Hamann, exhibition director at EuroBLECH, on behalf of the organisers, Mack Brooks Exhibitions. An exhibitor brochure including important information about stand reservation at EuroBLECH 2014 is now available in five languages. The brochure can be ordered via the newly designed show website: www.euroblech.com or directly from the organisers. EuroBLECH 2014, the 23 rd International Sheet Metal Working Technology Exhibition, will, once again, cover halls 11,12,13,14,15,16,17 and 27 at the Hanover Exhibition Grounds. The exhibition profile comprises the entire sheet metal working technology chain: sheet metal, semi-finished and finished products, handling, separation, forming, flexible sheet metal working, joining, welding and surface treatment, processing of

Technology Day focuses on part transport and transfer operation

a genuine alternative to progressive die manufacturing: it needs only the same space as the progressive die and also reduces material consumption as the parts are transported by the carriages and not the coil material itself, which must later be separated from the finished stamping as scrap. The performance of the Intra Trans is at least as high as that of current modular transfer solutions, which were also on show at the Technology Day. With its three automation levels, “L” (Light), “M” (Medium), and “H” (Heavy), the product portfolio covers low, medium and high part weights and stroke rates. Its high- speed servo drives ensure significantly improved transfer rates. In the “S” (Strong) version, extremely rigid and low-vibration carbon-fibre rails help raise productivity by up to 30 per cent. A further highlight was the live presentation of the active vibration dampening (AVD) system. This guarantees exact and controlled part transportation, even with variable loads and at peak transfer speeds. The demonstration of a transfer with a support width of ten metres and a profile of just 200mm impressed many visitors with its absolutely precise and vibration- free movements.

mounted on the transfer rails. This means that the full width of the window is available for material feeding and is no longer restricted by the transfer rails. A major benefit of this compact design is that larger parts can be produced on the same press. The Intra Trans is thus also ideally suited for retrofits on existing presses. As each carriage of the Intra Trans can be moved individually this even allows varying distances between stations. The new transfer also means material can be fed from both sides, thus enabling, for example, the central joining of parts. The Intra Trans is also

SOME 50 visitors from Germany and abroad attended a Technology Day held by Schuler Automation in Hessdor. As well as receiving information on the latest developments in part transport, they were able to observe eight different transfer systems in operation. The highlight was the presentation of the new Intra Trans, which offers new perspectives for manufacturing thanks to its efficiency and flexibility. In contrast to conventional transfers, the Intra Trans does not work through the press window but within the press – thus saving space. Parts are transported by carriages

Continuous Mill Technology (CMT), for example, is extremely energy-efficient. By linking the steel works directly to the rolling mill, the SMS group’s specialists have developed a process that coordinates continuous casting and rolling more efficiently. In cost terms, CMT saves around €11 per ton, while also cutting CO 2 emissions by 72,000 tons annually.

In front of 250 representatives from the industrial and political areas, the SMS group set out how ecoplant-orientated solutions can improve the running of metallurgical plants in both environmental and financial terms. What makes these solutions particularly attractive is the fact that they lower both operating costs and emissions at the same time. The speakers from SMS presented solutionscoveringtheentiremetallurgical process chain, from pig iron production through to the manufacture of finished metal sheets, strips and pipes.

CONSERVING energy and protecting the environment are increasingly important issues for the People’s Republic of China. Now, thanks to state-of-the-art technology, even the metallurgical industry is in a position to reconcile environmental and financial concerns. This was the most important conclusion reached at a conference held in Beijing by German plant construction and mechanical engineering SMS group and an organisation comprising various Chinese ministries.

to 650°C, and pipes are processed at up to 100mpm. Maximum yield strength is 1,180 MPa (171,145 psi). The 6CR Series API straightening machines consist of six concave rolls mounted in three pairs, vertically disposed and supported by base and crown sections held together by substantial steel columns. The top and bottom rolls can be driven by individual gear motors or large gearbox and universal drive shafts, which permit the angular and vertical adjustment of each roll. The rolls are quickly and easily adjusted angularly, to provide line contact between the tube/pipe and roll over the maximum effective length of the roll profile. This gives support to the tube/pipe over its length as long as possible and enables tubes with a very thin wall to be straightened without being damaged. In order to process upset-end pipe, the 6CR machines are designed with the ability to open each straightening pass automatically to allow the larger diameter upset end to pass through the machine unrestricted. They are engineered to automatically close immediately onto the pipe body after the upset end passes, allowing the machine to straighten the full length of the pipe body. Another design feature incorporates all of the upset movements into the top passes of the machine, eliminating the need for maintenance access to hydraulic cylinders in the base of the machine – an area typically flooded with scale and water. A quick-opening hydraulic relief circuit has been added as a safety measure to protect the rolls and bearings. Fives Bronx’s COMPASS computer- aided setting system utilises the latest in industrial electrical and electronic technology to provide consistent product quality and throughput capacity. CONTROLE Mesure Systèmes has designed, developed and manufactured a complete NDT range of products in eddy current and ultrasonic testing methods for more than 25 years that comprise high performance instruments and systems, probes and transducers, accessories and complete turnkey machines with associated mechanics. The main equipment manufactured by CMS is: eddy current rotating heads RotoETscan for tubes and bars diameter range 1 to 220mm for surface, subsurface and punctual flaws detection; and ultrasonic rotating head RotoUTscan for tube inspection welded in stainless steel, titanium, zirconium and carbon steel (diameter range 6 to 250mm) for longitudinal and transversal defect detection and thickness measurement MAGNETIC Analysis Corporation, a leader in non-destructive testing, is celebrating 85 years of designing and supplying innovative inspection instruments and systems for metal manufacturers throughout the world. Founded in 1928 in Long Island City, New York, at a time when testing for quality purposes usually meant laboratory “sampling” techniques that essentially destroyed or altered part of the product being tested, MAC began working with electromagnetic techniques to non-destructively test steel bars without altering the product. After six years of development work, MAC introduced the first successful bar tester to identify cracks in steel bars in a mill in 1934. Since then, the company has set the standard for innovative NDT technology for metal bar, tube and parts, with rotary eddy current testers, phase gating, pulsed eddy current, polar presentation, fully digitised test instrumentation, vivid colour presentations, rotary ultrasonic testers, advanced flux leakage inspection and much more. “With the increasingly demanding specifications

Lord Green opens facility LORD Green, Minister of State for Trade and Investment, has opened the new design and manufacturing facility of UK machinery builder, Unison. Based in Scarborough, Unison makes machines for bending metal tubes and pipes, exporting over half of its output – mainly to America. The new facility will allow Unison to more than double its production capacity, which will help the company to enter new international markets that it is targeting in the high growth ‘BRIC’ countries. Applauding Unison’s export success, Lord Green emphasised the critical need for the UK to increase its manufacturing output, and to increase its export ratio. In his role as Minister of State for Trade and Investment he has visited over 50 countries and he noted how receptive world markets are to British goods and services, and the high regard in which many countries hold British values, quality and technology. This effect has been greatly reinforced by the success of the London Olympic games and he urged British companies to capitalise on the major opportunities that exist. “Unison makes specialist equipment that goes around the world. It’s a perfect example of the kind of manufacturing that this country excels at and that we need to do more of,” said Lord Green. “We aim to make our new Scarborough facility the world centre for advancing tube bending technology,” added Alan Pickering, managing director of Unison. “One of the first machines we are manufacturing in the new factory will be the largest ‘all-electric’ tube bender ever made – with the ability to bend pipes up to eight inches in diameter. This technology is opening up new markets for Unison – in this case it’s destined for the shipyards in Virginia that build the US Navy’s aircraft carriers and submarines.” Roto-Die joins Formtek Group FORMTEK Inc has entered into agreement to purchase Roto-Die based in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Roto-Die is a manufacturer of hydraulic press brakes for sheet metal that has a unique, versatile tool design to quickly and easily switch between bending operations. “Having common dealers and serving similar markets, Roto-Die is a great fit for the Formtek Group,” said Darren Muchnicki, president of Formtek Inc. “It will be a great complement to our Iowa Precision, Lockformer, Engel, Lion and ISM products and solutions.” Formtek – USA Website: www.formtekgroup.com

Ultrasonic control bench A FRENCH tube manufacturer has placed an order to Tecnatom Metalscan for a new ultrasonic testing bench using phased array technology for a full body inspection. Provea will ensure all the mechanical design whereas M2M will deliver the full body phased array electronic equipment. speed will be controlled directly from the main HMI. The operator enters the tube information (diameter, length, thickness), and the pre-settings are done automatically. Setting time for a new tube production campaign is reduced compared to existing technology. Two lasers, in charge of encoding and speed measurement, are also integrated in the upper frame.

speed of control, the bench ensures the final customer global capacity target. This value is reached thanks to several features: an automation system ensuring a minimal distance between two tubes (0.5m approx). Phased array technology and full parallel M2M method are a key advantage in terms of productivity. Provea has an insonification of an area corresponding to the full length of the PA probe in 1 shot (gain of productivity). Therefore, the pitch can be driven up to 110mm, surface speed 1.5m/sec for all tubes. A software supervisor, Lineview, developed by Tecnatom Metalscan, manages the whole UT configuration and operation for calibration as well as production with the highest flexibility. The complete bench will be delivered in 2013. The main feature of this system is its roto-translation capacity: the tubes have a helical movement in order to control the entire tube surface with advanced design for short untested ends. The new equipment will allow several types of defect detection: axial and skewed cracks, transversal cracks, delamination and smooth defect. An ultrasonic thickness measurement system will also be configured; four phased array probes will be integrated into very specific ultrasonic tanks. The roto-translation motion will be possible thanks to angled roller conveying systems. The pitch and the

One of the most important technical developments is the partial immersion tanks designed for the project. They will enable the PA probes to come in contact with the tube without any water getting inside the tube (no plugging necessary). The mechanical design ensures a constant, accurately set and regular focal distance during the process. One of the main advantages of the future bench will be its flexibility. When it comes to changing the tube type, very few settings are necessary. Most of them will be centralised and controllable from the control panel. In terms of
