LB Foster has delivered 2,600 tons of pipe for the San Francisco transit hub excavation

36" pipe for transit hub excavation LB Foster Company has completed delivery of approximately 2,600 tons of 36" diameter steel pipe to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc, for use as lateral shoring struts in the excavation of San Francisco’s new Transbay Transit Center. the Port of San Francisco. LB Foster’s piling professionals managed logistics from the port to a steel fabricator for additional finishing and transport back to the jobsite. “More than 160 truckloads of pipe as heavy as 17 tons each were required for the excavation of this signature transit project,” said Dan Schrager, LB Foster construction products senior sales representative.

The new California High Speed Rail will also travel from the Transbay Transit Center to Southern California once that ambitious project is completed. Construction of the new transit hub began in 2011, with final completion currently scheduled for 2018. Established in 1902, LB Foster Company is a manufacturer, fabricator and distributor of products and services for the rail, construction, energy and utility markets with locations in North America and Europe.

The contractor required pipe in lengths from 40 to 70ft with a unique wall thickness of 1.125" to 1.5", to support the steel wide flange beams of the shoring walls inside the 60ft-deep excavation.

The multi-billion dollar Transbay Transit Center replaces the old bus terminal near San Francisco’s Embarcadero with a state-of-the-art regional hub that links the city to eight Bay Area counties and beyond with rail and bus transit systems.

Valve World Expo: 60% already booked As early as one and a half years before the start of the 3 rd Düsseldorf Valve World Expo, to be held at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre from 2 to 4 December 2014, the trade fair organiser has decided to open another hall for the duration of the exhibition. and visitors to use both the South Entrance on the Rhine and the North Entrance with the underground station.

Also new will be the location of the accompanying conference. While it used to be held in the rooms of the adjacent Congress Center Düsseldorf (accessed via the South Entrance), a large proportion of conference events are now to be held in Hall 4, which is more compact, transparent and right in the middle of the action. This move means that conference content is to be embedded in the exhibition activities, and conference delegates will be brought closer to exhibitor ranges.

The End Users’ Pavilion will be located in Hall 5 for the first time. This is a special show where initially some 20 end users, ie the exhibitors’ customers, will present their corporate portfolios. The aim is to promote matchmaking between exhibitors and end users. After Valve World Expo 2012, companies from the oil, water and chemical industries had requested to be presented at the next trade fair in 2014 in this format as a contact point for exhibitors.

In addition to exhibition Halls 3 and 4, now Hall 5 and the adjacent North Entrance will be opened. At this early stage, 60 per cent of existing exhibitors have already registered, which means that re-booking has been completed. For 2014 organisers expect another increase in exhibitors. Opening the second entrance will allow exhibitors

major impact on the heavy daily traffic. Taking into account the criteria – time frame, condition of the existing pipe, construction site surroundings, nominal width and length of the rehabilitation section – the Close-Fit method was selected. Breaks and cracks would normally require preliminary sealing. With the Close-Fit liner, depending on the flow level, this step is not necessary, and installation of the liner can be started without delay. With the help of a traction-limited winch and using a normal manhole, a four-man team from the Rabmer construction company, a subsidiary of SPR Europe, installed the pre-shaped PE pipe in the 150m length of sewer in two days. The deformation reduces the diameter of the new pipe by 25-30 per cent, making it

The close-fit method has existed for 20 years as an alternative to other trenchless pipe rehabilitation technologies, such as CIPP or spiral-wound pipelining. With the pipe-in-pipe method, pressure pipes as well as gravity pipes of various diameters and lengths can be quickly rehabilitated, extending the service life of the pipes by at least 50 years. In September 2012, quick rehabilitation was needed for 150m of sewage pipe with diameters of 300mm, on the shores of Lake Attersee, a popular holiday destination in Austria. SPR Europe used its Close-Fit liner to provide the solution. The sewer was showing signs of breaks and cracks in the brickwork after a pipe inspection. Trenchless renovation was the economical and technical best solution for rehabilitating the sewer in the specified narrow time frame and without

withstand even higher pressures in combination with the host pipe. In the following two days, rehabilitation was performed manually on the manholes as well as the connections to the manholes, where pressure was applied to eliminate the annular gap between the liner and the host pipe. SPR Europe has three key technologies for trenchless rehabilitation of water, sewage and gas networks: spiral- wound and cured-in-place pipe lining methods, as well as the Close-Fit lining. The products are distributed by the sales company SPR TEC Europe and manufactured at plants in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. easier to pull into the damaged pipe. With the help of hot steam and pressure, the Close-Fit liner was brought back into its original circular shape and pressed against the host pipe, without an annular gap. The new structurally self-supporting pipe within the pipe can withstand operating pressures of up to 12 bar, and can

Keighley achieves Nadcap accreditation The technical services division of Keighley Laboratories has achieved Nadcap accreditation for a materials testing laboratory (MTL), a status recognised by the majority of global aerospace primes as a mark of quality assurance excellence. As one of the few Nadcap-accredited MTL facilities in the UK, Keighley Labs has been successfully assessed for the evaluation of aerospace welds, tensile, impact and bend testing, metallographic and micro indentation hardness procedures, and specimen preparation and machining.

“Companies such as Keighley Laboratories go above and beyond achieving Nadcap accreditation, to obtain Merit status, and they should be justifiably proud of that. We are determined to support continual improvement in the aerospace industry, by helping companies such as Keighley Labs become even more successful.” Debbie Mellor, MD of Keighley Labs, commented, “This is an important breakthrough for the company, since it raises our profile and reputation within the aerospace industry and enables us to obtain greater recognition for our expertise in weld and materials testing.” “It helps us to retain existing customers within the Northwest Aerospace Alliance and beyond, establishes our technical credentials for fresh market opportunities in other industries and paves the way for further export business in weld testing and other special processes.” The Nadcap application, which was supported by numerous key aerospace customers and Airbus itself, involved divisional technical services director Matthew Mellor, senior metallurgist Peter Hanson, and quality manager Tim Clegg, in a thoroughly intensive programme.

The UK company also gained Merit grade, which rewards superior performance in Nadcap audits and reduces subsequent audit frequency. Accreditation has also prompted affirmation and prolongation of its Airbus approval, the aircraft manufacturer having adopted the Nadcap programme for its global supply chain.

Combinedwith UKAS accredited testing and certification to many international standards and Civil Aviation Authority approval of in-house weld specimen supervisors, this confirms the company as a centre of excellence for weld testing, at a time when there is a Europe-wide shortage of the necessary expertise.

“Achieving Nadcap accreditation is not easy; it is one of the ways in which the aerospace industry identifies those who excel in superior special processes,” said Joe Pinto, executive vice president and chief operating officer at the Performance Review Institute, whichadministers the Nadcap programme.
