School of Natural Sciences Majors UC MERCED

Answers to the world’s complex problems depend upon understanding physical and biological processes and crossing disciplines to harness knowledge from other fields. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in discovering new knowledge, as UC Merced’s world-class faculty members often recruit students to work in their labs. Students can choose from five majors that offer 18 emphases. This flexibility allows students to build on core knowledge and channel it into specialty areas, such as cell biology, biophysics and environmental chemistry, which will prepare them for a wide range of successful careers.

The bachelor’s degrees offered in Natural Sciences prepare students for a wide range of scientific and technologically advanced careers, including biotechnology, healthcare, forensic science, solar energy research, aerospace, telecommunications, education, environmental consulting, natural resource management, computational modeling and simulation, software development and predictive analytics. Alumni have begun careers in clinical laboratory technology, teaching and health administration. They have also gone onto prestigious graduate school programs in medicine, environmental systems, hydrology, physics, chemistry, forensic science, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, health administration, public health, physical therapy, pharmaceutical sciences, bioengineering, and quantitative and systems biology.
