From theEditor… ‘Open for Business’ as they say. NCYC is finally upand running for the summer and it’s due to everyonewho volunteered at thework parties and prepared our Island Treasure sobeautifully! OpeningWeekend, ‘Fitting-Out’ was ahuge success. I guess you can say I actedout theold saying “party until you drop”. Or at least, worked hard until I dropped. I want to send a sincereThankYou toall themembers that supported our club andworkedOpeningWeekendwith Jill andme. Plus, a show of gratitude to thememberswho stepped upat the last minute to fulfill dutieswherewewere shorthanded. Thanks toall of you! It was anenjoyable four days and awonderful timehadby all. Please look inside for highlights onupcoming news such as Calendar of Events, KidsDay, Club IslandRendezvous, and aSpecial Visitor Guest Pass offer.

See you on the Island,

Brent Malik Director, Publications

NCYC is officially openandLet theGamesBegin! What agreat start to the2014BoatingSeasonand it all came together perfectly. The weatherwas gorgeous, the food couldn’t bebeat andall of the membershipattendingwereawesome. P/CBobandPattiWatson were first upat bat andmademanaging that first pre-openingweek look likea pieceof cake. Thank youBobandPatti for laying the groundwork for all of the rest to follow. ThePomp, CircumstanceandTradition that theNCYC follows for Memorial Day openingmakes it oneofmy favoritesof things to attend for the season. There is a lot of specialmeaningbehind the Day itself not only inour personal lives but also inwhat has goneon withNorthChannel Yacht Cluband theNational Day of Remembrance together.

My thanksgoesout toABYACommodoreMatt Barells for attending theceremonyandalso to Capt. LukeClyburnalongwith theSeaCadetsandPrideof Michigan.

This year we re-visitedanother tradition that I am fondof and that is theSteer Roast. Thank youP/CBill andSandyBauer and crew, of which there is awhole list of helpers thatmake it all happen, for orchestratinganother successful NCYChappening! Another dynamic team that is never too far from theaction isP/CRick and Jill Romatz. If you’veever seena red-headed whirlwind full of energyand life it’s gottabe Jill. Snapof the fingersand there’s the rest of the meal togowith theBeef Roast. Another snapand there’sentertainment toget you dancin’ and singin’. Thanks to these folk’s efforts, wehada tastyAND successful Openingweekendat NorthChannel. Theaftermathof theSteer Roast is another excitingevent that cannot be left unmentioned. LEFTOVERS!Without the likes of theBreuhan’s, Campbell’s,Miedema’s, Schoen’sand Swatosh’swewouldn’t haveenjoyed the ‘Re-Visitingof theBeef’. Better knownas theTiara Group, TGWannabe’sandplainol’ BlackThunder these folks got upat aquarter toMimosa’s inearlymorningand started shreddingbeef before you could say BarBeeQsauce. They pulled off agreatmeal for all toenjoy. ThankYou! Monthsbefore, inadarkenedbackroomof theCrew’s Inn, newlyelecteddirectorswere huddled together busy drawing straws forWeekendManagers. Suddenlya curseandamoan, followedbyBrentMalik holding the short straw. Yes indeed…hedrew the short straw for managingOpeningWeekend!Well maybe it didn’t playout exactly like that but…. Brent… against all adversity youdidamagnificent job running the show for our first weekendof the Club. ThankYou!

Somy friends, that’show it was for oneweek in the lifeof NorthChannel Yacht Club. The wholepoint to all I’vewrittenhere is that weall got together andhadagreat timeof it.We ate, drank, laughedand cried, hugged, kissed, shookhandsandenjoyed the time spent at the NCYC.We hadmembers stepupandput together somethingweall enjoyed.Weworked together for the commongood. There’smore to come this seasonof 2014. Don’t bea stranger to the Island. Participate, see your friendsandmakenew friends.Welcome in thenewmembers to this special groupof folks that we share. Life is too short not to enjoywhat’s placedbeforeus.

Let TheGoodTimesRoll,

Herewegoagain………………….. Another great year to look forward to at the island. I spenda lot of time talking to the membershipwhileat the island. One of thenewermembers toldme something that expresseshow I felt when I was new to the club. He toldme that whenhe came to thework party this year it hit him that he, as he said “loves this place” that “if there is anything I cando to make the club successful just ask, anything”. Another person told me that hehopes that thework partiesnever stop. That those eventsarewhat helpshim feel personal ownership in the club. This kindof feedbackdescribes thepositiveeffects that the islandand our extended family hasonaperson. We havehadour first generalmembershipmeeting, steer roast, and theABYAoutingof 2014under our belt. Theywereall very successful, andmanyhad tons of fun!

Thanks for themanymembers that supported theactivities through their volunteerismand through their participation. Theseeventsand the visionof the club that was sharedby our memberswith the visitors producedsomenewmembershipapplications. We have kid’s day comingup very soon, Sandi and I look forward toputtingon theactivitywith thehelpof somany othermembers. The daywill be full of funandgames for the kids and I am sure theadultswill findenjoyment aswell. It is not too late to signup to givedonations, support, andbrining the kids, nephews, nieces, grandkids, friendsand neighbors.GiveSandi Stroha call. Membership –BobCarnaghi We have 4 people on the waiting list. We brought in a lot of people this year, but we must keep themembership drive going. Looking forward to another great summer at NCYC. Publications –GregBrigman Thanks to themembership, I appreciateall of the support I received this year. Thanks to Commodore Don for a great year. Five years ago I started on the board as the Board Recorder. I have seena lot of conversations, arguinganddebates at themeetings in the past, but this year therewereno fightsor arguing. Thiswas agreat board this year. Secretary –Diane French I knowwe have a lot to cover tonight, so I promise to keep this short. Because this is the LAST time I will have the opportunity to speak to this membership as a Board of Director, I just want to say THANK YOU for thosewho have supportedme the last nine years. A special thanks to P/C JimWhyard for his persistence to getme to run that first time. I started with Publications for 5 years, Activities for one year, then Supplies and this last year Secretary. Iwould like to saywhat apleasure it has beenworkingwith this Flag and Board this year. I think we should ALL give a SPECIAL thanks to Commodore Don & Barbara Vanover for making it such a FUN year. If anyone has any thoughts of running for office, I highly recommend it. Youwill get somuchmore out of it than you canpossibly imagine. Youonlyget out of this clubwhat youput into it. I saw a sign at the Leader Dog for the Blind in Rochester that reads, "Volunteers are unpaid, not because they areworthless but because they are priceless." So, asmy last act, on behalf of my fellow officers, I would like to make a motion to double the pay checksof ALLof theofficers. Forme, most of you have heardmy story, the opportunity to serve on this Board came at theperfect time inmy life. My husbandhad just passed away and at the same time I lost my job. Being on this Board gavememy "purpose in life" back. You have no idea what youhavedone forme. And for that, I can't thankyouenough.
