From the Editor… Fun was had by all on January 24 th as we raised our glasses to our new Commodore Brian McEvoy and wife Renée, to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of North Channel Yacht Club at the 2015 Commodore’s Ball. Planning for the club’s 2015 boating season is in high gear, and your elected board is active developing fun entertainment for the holiday’s and boating weekends ahead. I want to highlight a change the board approved in publishing the monthly meeting minutes. The change will allow the posting of the monthly Beacon earlier in the month. Starting in February, the monthly meeting minutes will be published two months following. For example, January’s meeting minutes will be published in the March Beacon. Due to, the Board of Directors has to approve the prior month’s meeting minutes before publishing them. With the board meetings taking place in the middle of each month, this will allow any ‘time sensitive’ information to be released in the monthly Beacon at the start of the month. Please look inside this issue for the up and coming events, NCYC Ski/Snowmobile Weekend, ABYA Boating Safety Seminars, and Club Calendar. Brent Malik Director, Publications “a ship in port is safe, but that is not what ships are built for…”

Commodores Comments…

Renee and I would like to thank everyone who attended the 2015 Commodore’s Ball. We had a great time and we were very happy we could share such a special night with such great friends and family. For those of you who couldn’t make it, we missed you and based on how full the dance floor was all night long you missed one heck of a party! Thanks Soul Provider for the awesome performance. Many thanks to everyone who helped us pull off this event, and to all of you who came in Saturday morning for set up. Congratulations to Ian Blackburn & Marie Pepin for their Spirit Award and Diane French for the Member of the Year Award. Both richly deserved for all their hard work and dedication. 2015 projects are already under way. The Point of Sale (POS) system has arrived! Ian Blackburn our supplies director has been communicating with the manufacturer and has provided them our menu, which will be loaded on our system just in time for our first training session in February. All of the components for the new PA/Music system have also been ordered and will be at the clubhouse for us to begin installation at the first Elite Brigade party. We will also have the components for the heat and air on hand as well. Hopefully everyone will pitch in their time and expertise to complete all of these projects before opening weekend. The 2015 work schedule is filling up. All members, if you haven’t already, need to send your top three choices for a work weekend to our Secretary Randy Pagel so that he can complete the schedule. If you are interested in managing for a week, contact PC Harley Burris. There are still three weeks open. NCYC has a couple of winter events coming up. Both are a great opportunity to get together and enjoy great company. First is the 5th Annual NCYC Ski/Snowmobile weekend at Shanty Creek. It should be a great time! Next is the ABYA Spring Rendezvous in Midland. This weekend always promises to be a lot of fun. I'm sure this year will be no exception. Watch your fan outs and the Beacon for details on both of these great events. Commodore Brian McEvoy

Vice Commodores Comments…

Man was it ever a BLAST!!! The 2015 Commodore's Ball is now in the history books. The NCYC rich tradition of our Commodore’s Ball was well attended and it did not disappoint. Brian and his lovely wife Renee, along with all of their NCYC support team did a fantastic job. If you unfortunately had to miss the event for whatever reason, bummer, you missed good food and drink, good music and dancing, great comradery, and a great party. We still have fun to look forward to this winter. The ABYA event in Midland is approaching in March. It is not too late to get your reservations in to participate in that fun event and represent NCYC. Also bowling each month is a great way to stay connected to our extended family at NCYC, come say hi and socialize with the teams. As Vice Commodore, I am taking tons of notes in preparation for my Commodore year using Commodore Brian’s actions as my guide. One of the events I must prepare for is the 2016 Commodores cruise. I know you are saying it is only February 2105! Why so early? Well, we will need to make reservations a year in advance to ensure that our group is covered for this exciting event. My original choice was gong north through Lake Huron to Georgian Bay and the North Channel. As I thought about the trip, I felt that plan might be a bit selfish and many members would likely not be able to participate. Then Sandi and I had a brainstorm and came up with an idea that we feel will make participation possible and desirable for a much larger group. The plan is to go south, tentatively the 2 nd week in August, to Dale Hollow Lake in Tennessee or Lake Cumberland and rent houseboats with all of the amenities; slides on the top to go into the lake for swimming, hot tubs under the stars, and much more. They have houseboats that can accommodate from three to six couples per boat. So buddy up, find a group that you love spending time with, and let Sandi or I know so we can get you on the list for this new, exciting boating experience. We can raft the houseboats and have a big party. Sandi and I are trailering our center console to be able to tube, board, ski, and fish; others may want to do the same? More information to follow in the next couple of months. See the web site link for more information http://www.houseboating.org We each need to be logging the “save the date” on our calendars for the very important upcoming elite brigade dates as well as the opening work parties. I look forward to it! As the count down continues for launch, only 63 days, it is getting closer every day! V/C Chuck Stroh

Rear Commodores Comments…

The 2015 Commodores Ball is behind us now but it has left us with fond memories of a great time. I would like to thank Commodore Brian McEvoy and his wife Renee for the fantastic time that they provided to all of us. If you did not make it to the ball, you missed the premier event of year. February reminds us that we are still in the hands of winter and its ruthless weather and road conditions. The ice dams in the St. Clair River have lowered the levels of Lake St Clair, but should not have an effect on the lake levels into the upcoming boating season. While most of you are awaiting the thaw and upcoming launch, the Board and Flag are hard at work, fine tuning this year’s projects and expenditures. One of the new concepts that we will be introducing this year will be new member orientation. We will be requesting all new members to attend an orientation session where they will be introduced to the rules, policies, and By Laws of NCYC. Any existing members would also be welcome to attend any of the orientation sessions. I can’t think of a better way to welcome our new members to our club and offer them a better way to get involved. This is my second article for the Beacon and if you don’t want to hear me preach about getting involved 34 more times, please listen and start getting involved with what we do, what we are, what we are about. You only get out of this club what you put in to it. Please volunteer for a committee if asked, or better, volunteer before being asked. Get involved, you won’t regret it. Rear Commodore, Pat Carroll

AMessage From Chaplain Art Brooks…

In follow up to my email regarding the passing of Bill Yowan on Friday, January 30th. He was surrounded by his family. Please pray for Bill and his family during this time of need.

Obituary for William E. Yowan, Age 73 Resident of Shelby Township. Beloved husband for 53 years of Marie. Dear father of Gary Yowan, Sandy (Ed) Gulick and the late Glenn (twin brother of Gary). Dear grandfather of Eddie, Tommy, and Kaitlyn. Brother of Diane Cassatly and the late Myrna Gatlin. Retired from Ford Motor Company after 37 years. Graduate of Mississippi State University. Avid boater and member of the North Channel Yacht Club. Another long time member, Sharon Wood, passed away peacefully on January 13th. She and partner, John Prochaska, had been very active up to several years ago, achieving the designation of “Member of the Year” for their many hours of hard work and dedication. We pray that Sharon is at peace and that John will find comfort through his friendships at NCYC. I received the following email regarding 1989 Past Commodore Ardo Apigian. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. "Hi Art, Ardo is in St. Joe hospital with blood clots in both legs and in his lungs. They have him on heparin and they feel he will do well because his vitals are excellent. I'm asking for prayers and good thoughts. No phone calls please. He will be in the hospital for several days until they can regulate his blood thinner. Thanks, Charlene"

Below is a path of life to relate too.

The Voyage of Life

At birth we board a seagoing vessel and meet our parents. We believe they will always travel by our side. However, at some unknown port, our parents will hop off from the ship, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other crew members will join us on our voyage and they will be significant – siblings, friends, the love of your life, children and many others. At some point, some will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we won’t realize that they have vacated the aft seat. The boat ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, good-byes and farewells. A successful voyage requires having a good relationship with all the crew. We must give the best of ourselves. The mystery to everyone is, we do not know at which port we ourselves will depart. So, we must live in the best way….. love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes to depart , we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue on sailing on the vessel of life.

Get the retirement youwant.

It’s never too soon to start planning.

Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn those dreams into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them. That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help your money work long enough and hard enough to fund the retirement you envision. LIFEWELLPLANNED. Contact me to get started.
