MAKING THENEWS Cable will transform trans-Atlantic link

WORK on building the world’s first 100x100 Gbps multi-million dollar trans-Atlantic submarine fiber optic cable begins next month. The 5,200km cable will transform band width and connectivity and will be a much welcome boost to Iceland’s emerging data center industry. EmeraldAtlantis Limited(EA)andTE SubCom this week announced the finalization of an Instruction to Proceed to build the Emerald Express Trans-Atlantic Cable System, with EA being tasked to design the 100x100Gbps on each of its six fibers. “This will provide Iceland with the required connectivity to support the anticipated explosive growth of low cost, 100% carbon free, renewable energy powered data centers based in Iceland, in which the Wellcome Trust, Emerald Atlantis’ largest shareholder and strategic partner, has a major investment,” said Greg Varisco, EA president. The trans-Atlantic marine cable route survey between UK and Canada starts inearlyAugust and the systemwill enter

“This industry shifting commitment to new Trans-Atlantic bandwidth is on the fast track and Subcom is looking forward to working with the Emerald Atlantis team in the US and Iceland, where we have worked before, to deliver this unique IT infrastructure project within budget and on time,” said Michael Rieger, SubCom vice-president of global sales.
