President’s Message

A s I write this message, it is the end of another, one of many, rainy weekends here at Greystone. The last several week- ends have provided limited golf and tennis play. I’m sure most of you are like me and are ready for better weather and hopefully many weekends where we can enjoy the facilities Greystone has to offer. Despite the unfavorable weather, our Greystone committees have gotten off to a great start working on many improvements centered around membership growth, retention and engagement. I want to thank all of our committee chairs and members for their commitment to making Greystone great. Greystone has provided several great events for members to enjoy thus far in 2018. Comedy Night, the Wild Game Dinner and Valentine’s Dinner have been well attended and the feedback on these events has been very positive. In addition, our Chef’s Dinners, Sunday Brunches and Cellar 91 dining have gotten off to a great start. Our new dinner menu and family favorites has been well received. Our board and management are listening to the members and we will continue making adjustments during the year as a result of member feedback. The spring season includes some of Greystone’s best events. Easter is just around the corner and our annual Easter Egg Hunt is a member favorite. I am certain Chef Alan has a very special menu planned for our Easter Brunch. The Greystone Member Guest is upcoming and thanks to our staff and the GMGA, this event is recognized as the premier-member guest in our area. The Women’s SEC Championship will be returning to the Legacy Course for the fourth time with a weekend completion televised by ESPN. The tournament and television schedule will be sent to members in advance. We encourage you to come out and watch some fantastic golf played by ladies you will soon see on the LPGA Tour.

Just around the corner is the Regions Tradition. Last year Greystone made $450,000 on this tournament and we expect to do even better in 2018. Our new Regions Tradition Committee is working closely with the PGA Tour to roll out great member packages for our members. This year’s packages will be on an “opt in” basis, so we encourage you to take advantage of these packages for your family and guests.

This is one of the premier events on the PGA Tour Champions schedule and the players love competing in front of the tremen- dous crowds we have for this tournament. In addition, we will have some great after round parties on the patio that you will not want to miss. If you are a business owner or in sales, please take a look at the various sponsor opportunities available to entertain your clients and prospects. I want to take a moment to thank the great staff at Greystone for all they do to create a great member experience. We recently had a dinner to recognize several of our staff for their years of service to our club. There were four celebrating five years, three at ten, one at fifteen and one at twenty. We have a similar numbers each year which shows Greystone is a great place to work. This is also a testament to how our members treat our staff. I would be remiss if I did not take time to welcome our new Food & Beverage Manager, John Onsa, to Greystone. If you haven’t met John, please reach out to him. He is a great addition to our management team and if you have been dining at Cellar 91, I’m sure you’ve seen the positive impact he is having on the service. In closing, one of my commitments to the members this year is to have regular communication on the financial position of our club. Please stay tuned as we will be giving an update at the end of the first quarter. Please take advantage of all the upcoming opportunities to use and enjoy your club. Together we can make 2018 the best year ever at Greystone! Lane Milam Club President, 2018

General Manager’s Message

Dear Members, Capital projects are underway. The two projects we have focused on are the development of a new conference room in the old TaylorMade Performance Lab and converting the upstairs conference room into office space for the member- ship development team. The major project is the refurbishing of the pools. This includes removing all old plaster, replacing broken tiles, coping, deck repairs, all mechanical upgrades, new diving board, new dive blocks, new life guard stands, new cabanas, improved drainage and painting of the decks, bathrooms, and building. The next project will be the refurbish- ing of half of the Har- Tru tennis courts. We have some incredible social events coming this spring, so please read closely in this issue and look out for our communications. The Murder Mystery on March 10, Witness Tree Wine Dinner on March 22, Easter Egg Hunt on March 31, Easter Brunch on April 1 and Sinatra at the Stone on April 20 are some of the highlights you don’t want to miss. Private event bookings are also off to a great start with 12 wedding receptions and 7 rehersal dinners. We have made some changes in the Food and Beverage team over the winter, as you know. We are not increasing personnel but restructuring with the addition of John Onsa as Director of Food and Beverage. John oversees the entire front of the house side of service and Chef Alan oversees all food production and execution. Sous Chef Adam Joiner left in December for a position in Mississippi, Michael Edwards moved on to a new opportunity, Helen Humphreys moved back to Chicago and David Dunston stepped down from his Sous Chef position to focus more time with family, and fortunately he is still with us. We have the same number of personnel, just a few new faces and our team is even stronger now to deliver the quality and service you desire and deserve.

In case you have not read about the change to the food minimum, I would like to explain the change again for you. The food minimum is now a Club Minimum. It includes prepared or pre-packaged food consumed at the club or take out, all beverages (alcohol and non-alcohol) and merchandise from the tennis and golf shops. Wine purchased in bulk wholesale through the club does not count toward the Club minimum. Raw product cannot be purchased to count toward the Club minimum. I hope this change is a positive one for you and your family.

Regions Tradition is fast approaching and this year we will be offering two ticket packages for purchase, and there will be no auto billing with opt out. The entire month of March the PGA Tour will offer a discount on the packages. Also, members can purchase guest passes by the day this year versus previously by the week. We will be offering daily happy hour Thursday- Sunday from 3pm-4pm and bands Thursday-Saturday, as well as a comedian on Saturday night between music sets. The Club is offering an incentive to members who bring in new members. If you bring in a new social member before the tournament, you will receive two Member Badges. If you bring in a golf member, you will receive two V.I.P. Member Badges with Cellar 91 + Patio access as well as access to an on-course Member VIP area. If you bring them in after you purchase the tickets, we will reimburse your account. The staff and I are excited for a busy spring season at the Club. I am looking forward to seeing you around campus.

All the best, Dave Porter General Manager

South Africa Member Trip AS DOCUMENTED BY DAVE KUYKENDALL

DAY 1 IN MALA MALA We were greeted by a few friendly elephants, Roll Tide. Then embarked on an evening safari that produced some unbelievable scenery and situations. We saw the big 5: lions, elephants, giraffes, rhino, and a leopard. We even had a close encounter in the Zaharias/Viner Jeep, where a rhino backed them down! Can’t get that at the zoo! After a wonderful dinner, we were exhausted from an unforgettable day! DAY 2 IN MALA MALA We went on safaris in the morning and afternoon. We saw our 1st male lion today. It was a beautiful overcast morning and the temps were very pleasant. There is no way that these pics do justice to this majestic land. Seeing nature this close is truly unbelievable. The people who are serving us here are so hospitable and so proud of their country. We feel like part of the family even if it is for a short period. Kelly and I feel so fortunate to be part of this adventure. After a final safari in the evening we enjoyed wine and snacks on the Savana; thankfully we weren’t the main course! DAY 3 IN MALA MALA Our morning drive with, Mike was awesome! We had two very exciting chases that involved high speeds in an open jeep. We almost lost Terry and Dottie Smith, but Mike said we would have gone back for them later. Everyone survived and we saw 3 rare animalscapehuntingdogs, cheetah, andajackal.Mikewaswonderfulkeepingussafeand providing us spectacular views. After some quick naps we began our evening safari, where we stumbled upon a pride of 13 lions in a creek bed. They were unfazed by our presence due to the extremely large meal they had just eaten. We had rain but Mike supplied us with ponchos. We had an encounter with a cute baby elephant. We didn’t have the heart to tell him that he was just not big enough for those intimidating moves, but you’ve got to respect his attitude and his mom for pushing him off the road. After an enjoyable dinner, it was hard to think that this was our last night in Mala Mala. One more drive in the morning and then off the Fancourt for some golf. DAY 4 LEAVING MALA MALA We had a challenging travel after a beautiful morning drive. Let’s just say we made it. Southwest doesn’t fly here but they should. My wife, Kelly and I were picked up by John Bland (1996 Bruno’s Memorial Classic Champ). We stayed with he and Sonya while in Fancourt. The Greystone crew made it to the Manor House in time for a nice dinner and rest. Golf tomorrow my, 1st round of 2018! I’m so excited! DAY 5 IN BLANCO We began with golf at Fancourt on one of the most beautiful golf courses I have ever played. There is no way to share all of the great shots. We were joined by special guest, John Bland. All who played enjoyed it with cool weather, but no rain. Premier Africa greeted us with a starter and snacks at the 1st tee. It’s tradition here to stop at the turn and have a chicken pie, which was delicious. Lunch that followed was fantastic! Then we were off to see ostriches and elephants in the afternoon. We left a cool environment and crossed over mountains to find a desert within 25 minutes of us. We first visited the ostriches & then to visit with the elephants. Funny how we felt threatened by elephants in Mala Mala, but now we were feeding and being hugged by them. How crazy! Afterwards we went back to the house with a couple of bottles of wine. Cheers!

DAY 6 AT FANCOURT COUNRTY CLUB Well, the number one golf course in South Africa, The Links at Fancourt certainly lived up to all the expectations. The wind assisted in making the hardest course I have played into a thorough beat down of all of the Greystone members including the pro. It was spectacular. The course was challenging (pot bunkers, heather everywhere but fairway, 20 mph winds). The conditions were awesome. The scores were not. At the turn I had a chicken pie which was the only decision I committed to all day. Fear dictated the day on the links. After golf we were whisked away to walk with the lions. Scary to see them after being told they would kill you. The experience was spectacular and the lions were well behaved. Seriously, I could have just reached out and touched them. We stopped by the Indian Ocean on the way home just to dip our feet. John and Sonya Bland invited our entire group to a cookout at their house. Great food and wine andsuch great hosts! Thanks John and Sonya for making Fancourt great! We then had to say goodbye to Fancourt. It was sad because the golf was out of this world here. DAY 7 CAPE TOWN We awoke to a beautiful leisure morning in Fancourt with eggs benedict and croque madame. Next we said our goodbyes to our wonderful hosts, John and Sonya Bland, then headed the airport to wait for our 50 minute flight to Capetown. We arrive to this giant city and checked into the Table Bay Hotel. Then we all enjoyed a lazy afternoon at the waterfront in Capetown. Kelly and I walked around seeing all the shops and interesting eating places. We had a little snack and some drinks by the water. After a relaxing afternoon, we assembled for an unbelievable dinner on the Waterfront where we were joined by Andrew and Michelle Whitelaw. After dinner we enjoyed cake for Jackie’s birthday, then it was off to bed! DAY 8 CAPE TOWN We began the day with breakfast at the hotel, then took off for the Cape of Good Hope. We traveled a road around the mountain on one of the most beautiful drives in the world. When we arrived at the Cape, we were greeted with seals and baboons. To follow was the most spectacular view imaginable. These pics will not do it justice but here ya go. After that, we went to see penguins (penguins in Africa?). They were awesome! Then my favorite part of the day, lunch, at the Harbor House on False Bay. Again, these pics are a small indication of how majestic this place was. Our drive home got a little spicy when we hit Capetown traffic. Country music in South Africa.... it just felt right. Our driver Deon didn’t agree. We then arrived at 12 Apostles Hotel on the ocean where I experienced one of the best dinners ever. From the sunset to dessert, we enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. Life is good! DAY 9 LEAVING SOUTH AFRICA We had very pleasant weather the entire trip, but this day we got the heat. It was about 95 degrees for our early morning golf round at Pearl Valley Golf Club. We had twelve golfers, the other two enjoyed a “girls do anything day” around Cape Town. We enjoyed the course with bent grass greens which were very true and quick. Everyone enjoyed lunch at the club and cooled off for the afternoon adventure to one of the many vineyards in this region. Some did wine tastings and others visited a car museum. Needless to say, the wines were fantastic. Visiting all of the vinyards in this region could be a separate vacation in itself! We arrived back to the hotel for showers and our last night in South Africa. As we finished our final dinner together, we remembered the sites, people, sounds, and the cuisine from this truely remarkable part of the world. This trip has changed me forever and I’m so to have had the opportunity to travel to South Africa with these 6 couples.

It is extremely gratifying to know our team’s teaching and coaching is developing players at all levels. In 2017, our Lead Instructor and Operations Manager, Brian Speakman was awarded the Alabama Northwest Florida Section PGA, Teacher of The Year, the highest teaching award in our Section. We suggest the membership seek him out and engage in his programs. Our new Scoring Club and Scoring Workshops will highlight Brian’s skills so we encourage you to participate. Liz Mattioli has grown our active ladies programing to over 100 women which is amazing. This season we are adding an LPGA 101 class to introduce new golfers and continuing our Ladies Spring Clinic Series. Chip Thomas drives our junior programs while also fulfilling his duties as the First Assistant at the Legacy golf shop. In 2017, Chip was nominated for the Section Player Development award, which is a huge honor. Eric Blinn at Legacy also continues to be a integral part of the instructional team assisting in our coaching programs whenever possible. To further develop our Junior programming and lighten Chip’s load, we are excited to add Max Doster, PGA, to the Instructional team for 2018. Max brings a wealth of experience in junior development having won the Section Player Development award during his time at Highland Park. Max will head up our Golf 101, Operation 36, PGA Sports Academy, and Junior League Team aimed at growing our junior programs and memberships. Max will also direct our PGA Hope program which offers our Veterans access to golf through PGA Grants. All members are encouraged to attend our free “Edumertainment” (hybrid of education and entertainment) evenings that will run through the spring and summer. These events are an opportunity to learn and be entertained by your instructional team. Our first event will be Thursday, March 15th with our second on Thursday April 19th. We will post topics via the weekly news but are open to discussing any golf related subjects, so feel free to send any requests you might have our way. In the interim, please know you are always welcome to drop in at the Performance Center whether to observe a lesson from the comfort of our lounge or try one of our coaching programs. If you’re looking to develop your golf game in 2018, we strongly urge you to come visit the Performance Center and let us help you develop a program to accomplish your goals.

GREYSTONE PERFORMANCE CENTER While the weather outside has been less than inviting this winter, our Greystone Performance Center has been bustling with member coaching programs. If you have not yet experienced a lesson or one of our coaching programs at The Performance Center, it is a must for developing your golf game. With the latest video and biofeedback technologies, the facility offers members and guests an amazing learning environment. Regardless of the weather, we have the ability to work on improving all aspects of your game from putting to driving. Members can send the instructional team videos from their smart phone to be analyzed and returned with a practical solution to improve their scores. Our members who have utilized the instructional team have had some fantastic success with their golf over the last few years, both home and away from the Club. Our

Matchplay Champions for the last three years are all students and our multiple club Champion, Steven Muncher can often be seen at Legacy striping shots out of the Performance Center. Our juniors continue to earn college scholarships and excel in high school and elite junior tournaments across the country. Our Player Develop- ment Members and Ambassadors are earn- ing PGA Latinoamerica and LPGA Symetra Tour status. While our PGA Tour players have been winning tournaments and competing in The Presidents Cup. The proof is definitely in the pudding as they say!

We look forward to seeing you soon!

SETTING THE STAGE Well 2018 certainly got off to a chilly start with temperatures going below freezing 20 days in January and the average temperature nearly 5 degrees below normal for the month! That made it very difficult to get rounds of golf in and led to a lot of covering and uncovering of the bermuda greens at Founders. The good news is that with the colder than average temps we haven’t noticed any added stress to the greens at Founders and very little in our other turfgrass areas. Early spring is an important time of year for several tasks that set the stage for course conditions throughout the year. The first of which is greens aerification at Legacy. This will take place the week of February 20th and into March. We have modified the process this year to include a deep drill aerification in addition to our standard core aerification. This application consists of 5/8” drill bits on 5” spacing penetrating the greens profile up to a 10” depth, which is very beneficial inhelpingmoisturemove through theprofile inolder greens likeours, aswell as creating opportunities for deeper rooting. This should be very beneficial in summers like 2017 in which we encounter a lot of rain and humidity. It is important to note that the deep drill process should not add any time to the overall healing process. Another very important task is our spring fertilizer/pre-emergent herbicide spread, which is scheduled for both courses in March. This application includes fertilizer granules with a herbicide sprayed onto the particles. Once watered the herbicide washes off and locks in just below the surface, creating a barrier against weeds. The coated fertilizer particle then settles into the top of the soil and slowly breaks down over time, providing the turf with continuous feeding throughout the growing season. Other important tasks taking place this time of year include preventative maintenance on both irrigation pump stations, collecting annual soil samples for data analysis, spreading of pinestraw in beds and native areas, bunker maintenance (depth checks and adjustments as required), physical properties testing on the greens at Legacy (by an accredited lab), and seeding of fescue in select native areas at the Founders. Successful and timely completion of tasks like these will put us in position to provide great course conditions throughout the year! JasonMiller Director of Golf Course Operations

The Greystone lady golfers are about to get into full swing. We would like to invite all lady golfers to come join us on April 5th at 10:00 AM for our first official playday of the year. So mark your calendars and hope for beautiful weather. Our annual Tillie Bailey Memorial Invitational will be held May 3rd and 4th. Hole sponsors allow us to raise funds for a very nice donation to the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. This disease took Tillie from us way too soon and this is our way of honoring her memory. In

the past, we have also been able to make a donation to the Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation, of which Tillie was one of the major founders. This organization provides scholarships and grants to deserving young ladies who have an interest in the game. So, please consider sponsoring a hole to support this great cause. Ladies, contact your friends and form a team to play in this fun event.

GOLF SPECIFIC SPORT PERFORMANCE All our personal trainers in the Fitness Center are now certified by the prestigious Titleist Performance Institute to work with golfers to maximize their physical performance! Is your physical condition keeping you from playing the game you love at your full potential? We can help you in the Fitness Facility. We use an advanced approach created by the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) to screen golf athletes for common movement dysfunctions that may be hurting your game or causing you injury. During a TPI movement screen, we will assess your physical fitness and movement quality. We use these results to prescribe exercises that will correct physical issues that will give you the capability to produce a more efficient golf swing. Results are based on the individual and may include any of the following: fitness training, physical therapy, coaching of swing mechanics and biomechanics, and nutrition. Call or email us today to set up an appointment with one of our TPI professional trainers.

LIVE HEART RATE MONITORING FOR GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES Introducing OnBeat live heart rate monitoring right here in your very own fitness facility! This system will allow the members to view real-time results including active heart rate, zone, calories burned and their average heart rate during and after the group fitness class. We will provide Bluetooth heart rate monitors to the first 8 participants in each class if they choose to use this feature. It will be the participants discretion if they want their information displayed on the screen. At the end of the workout, the member will receive an email with a detailed summary of their results from the session: workout time, calories burned, and average heart rate. We will also be able to provide the Bluetooth monitors for members to use on any of our elite cardio equipment for accurate heart rate monitoring and calorie expenditure.
