The next day, her new life in USA began. She was told by their friend how to obtain social security card and they took her in Jamaica Social Security Office. In the same year, she received her ECFMG certificate and started working in a Geriatric Center health facility in Brooklyn as a physician. Dr. Billah’s son, Wasim, was staying with his maternal grandparents at that time in Bangladesh. She got her first-year surgical residency at Booth Memorial Medical Center of New York and until she started residency, she continued job in the same Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center in Brooklyn. She finished her surgical internship and then joined Brooklyn Jewish Medical Center for Diagnostic Radiology Residency. During her surgical residency in 1977, she went back to Bangladesh to bring her son, Wasim with her to USA. After she completed radiology residency, she got her state license as physician in New York in 1982. She joined Bronx Lebanon Hospital as a fellow staff Radiologist and was working there for six years. She joined Mary Immaculate Hospital in 1987. In next several years, Dr. Billah became part of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and was attending Radiologist until that hospital merged with St. John and became Interfaith Medical Center in 2001; and she continued to practice in the same hospital with a new name of the hospital and location. It is located on Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn.
She still took the same Interboro Parkway, which was renamed Jackie Robinson Parkway for her daily commute. She was working for the hospital until her retirement in 2015. From then on, her new modified life as a physician in private practice started. Writing stories was her hobby since her childhood and started publishing her first short story in high school journal. Her published book in USA was entitled, Beyond Destiny, which was all about their life in Dhaka, Bangladesh that served as her inspiration for the book.
