COURSE DESCRIPTION 2012 2013

This is a seminar for upper-class students, preferably who have taken Health Law or have a health care background. The course will introduce students to the skills involved in representing consumers who seek access to health care, using current topical problems. After an introduction to the lawyer's role in consumer health care advocacy, the course will be organized around multi- week "modules", such as individual client advocacy, regulatory advocacy, advocacy through impact litigation, and community- based advocacy. Each module will involve a lecture, discussion of assigned reading, introduction of the case problem, and an oral exercise or written assignment. Skills to be addressed will include client interviewing and advising, strategizing about case development, writing effectively, and negotiation. Students will be graded on class participation and the quality or written work and oral presentation throughout the semester. Not offered 2012-2013
