Public Health Law - Power, Duty, Restraint

2 credits day; 2 credits evening. Grading will be non-anonymous and by alphabetic grade method. Evaluation will be based on class participation, short writing assignments, and a final oral presentation and written assignment. 20% Class Participation 40% Short Writing Assignments 40% Final Presentation and Written Summary

Public Health Law includes a wide spectrum of topics and issues. In this course we will study: - The definition(s) of public health - The basis of the government to regulate the interest of public health - Relationship of federal, state and local jurisdictions in the regulation of public health - Individual rights and the limitations on the government to regulate in the interest of public health We will then use these concepts to examine the various issues in public health and the law including: - Surveillance, Research and Policy - Control of Communicable Diseases - Public Health Emergencies - Isolation and Quarantine - Reproductive Issues - Public Health and the Environment - Public Health: Stem Cell Research Regulation - Litigation as Public Health Strategy The textbook for the course is Public Health Law Power , Duty, Restraint by Lawrence O.
