THE W EST COAST CONFERENCE was originall y founded in 1952 as the California Basketba ll Assoc iation to provide a conveni ent venu e for five San Fran cisco Bay Area sc hoo ls to compete in basketba ll. Since that modest beg inning, th e Conference has evo lved in to a nationall y recogn ized and competitive force w it hin the NCAA T he leag ue formally known as the West Coa st At hl etic Conference currently sponsors 13 sports: baseball , both men's and women's basketball , cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis; and women's vol leyba ll and crew. FROM THE PINE FORESTS of Ea stern Washington, to the Columbia River Basin, to the dynamic San Fran cisco Ba y Area, to the sunny beaches of Southern California, the current wee membership spans the weste rn coast of the United States. The Conference is characterized by th e stability of its membership, as only t wo NCAA Di vis ion I conferences nati onal ly have been together longer. S ince its birth in 1952, the wee has been a dominant force in interco ll egiate athleti cs, boasting 33 NCAA indi vid ual and team championships. And w hile titl es are being earned on the field , degrees are being earned in the classroom, as the wee is home to numerous Academic All-Americans. And after graduation, West Coast Conference alumni ha ve continued to flouri sh, as some of the world 's elite athletes started in the wee. THE so-YEAR HISTORY OF THE wee demonstrates that success in interco llegiate athletics ca n be built on the foundation of values, character and academics.
