SPALDING TOWNSHIP OPEN HOUSE

A thought that was put before the Spalding Township over 5 years ago became a reality this summer, after planning the project for over a year. The actual work began in June of 2016. After many delays during construction, the new township hall/fire station was completed in April of 2017. The new structure measures 80ft. deep and 110ft. long, the fire station itself is 80ft. x 80ft., the township side measures 30 x 80 ft. The fire station has 6 stalls, showers, bathrooms, a chief’s office and a spare office that can be used as a command center for a disaster in the northern part of Menominee county. The funding was voted and approved by the spalding township residents and a loan from the USDA was approved. The township offices are now consolidated with the Village of Powers office. All under one roof. The convenience for the township and village residents has been much appreciated . The township board and the fire dept members wish to thank the residents of Spalding Township for having the foresite to invest in such an enormous undertaking. As one member of the board put it, “We are a very progressive community and have the full support of its residents.” This structure will be there to serve the township for many, many years.

Township Officials and Firefighters cut the ribbon for the Grand Opening of the Spalding Towship Hall. L/R: Kevin Labonte,(trustee) Dave LeBeouf, (trustee) Melissa Hart,, Jim Moraska (supervisor) Cherryl Mencinger, (clerk) Jerry Bartnicki, (treasurer) Les Srynka , Tom Wells , Jordan Hafeman

TREK THE MAC - The Bucket List

Al Bjorkman The Mare that saved Al Bjorkman’s life.... (Continued page 16)

Trek The Mighty Mac was an experience we won’t soon forget. It started last May in Christmas Michigan. We were there on a spring ATV ride and met a gal name Sue! We were looking at an ATV map on the wall and discussing other possible rides. Sue mentioned the ride going across the Mackinac Bridge and the interest was sparked. We exchanged information and became friends on Facebook. ( Continued Page 12) Over 600 ATV’s and well over 1,000 people drove over the Mackinac Bridge for the Mud Brother’s 3rd Annual Trek the Mighty Mac run- (this picture is taken from an ATV as it is crossing the Mac)

No one could have ever predicted that a yearly Elk hunting trip in the mountains of Montana could have turned treacherous in such a short amount of time. Mountain weather, like Yooper weather can turn totally unpredictable in a quick minute. A winter storm warning of 1-2” was on the forecast, but a blizzard blew in making the 9 mile trip to home base impossible. For Al Bjorkman of Niagara Wisconsin this blizzard became a battle of survival. His hunting partner, Ray O’Connor from Bark River, MI
