Cable production with reduced energy consumption

To remain competitive, data and communication cable manufacturers need production equipment that saves energy and reduces consumption of raw materials and consumables. Maschinenfabrik Niehoff has developed a range of machinery to meet these requirements. The double-twist stranding machines of the DSI series (DSI 631 and DSI 1001) are built for a wide conductor cross-section range and a maximum strand diameter of 8.5mm or 15mm. The lay length can be freely adjusted within a very narrow tolerance band; the lay length consistency is < ± 0.5% of the effective lay length. The DSI machines are equipped with Class IE2 energy-saving AC motors with electronic control, and correspond to the current safety regulations of the machinery directive RL 2006/42/EG. Characteristics of the DSI stranders (available in left- and right-hand versions) are the single bow design – which results in a significantly reduced energy consumption and noise Data cable stranding line consisting of a back twist payoff ARD 630 D (left), a longitudinal tape payoff ALB 600, and a double-twist ❍ stranding machine DSI 631 (right)

emission – and a contactless machine data transfer, which reduces maintenance as well as operational and material costs to a minimum. The DSI machines can be combined with other systems such as double-twist back twist payoffs, longitudinal tape payoffs and pre-twisters. Depending on line configuration up to three foils can be applied on the cable under controlled film tension. For certain applications a double-twist back twist payoff can be applied. Optionally the double-twist back twist payoff can be used to enable a triple twist stranding process. In this way the stranding speed and therefore the production capacity can be considerably increased and – as a consequence – the production costs can be reduced. DSI machines can be integrated into stranding lines to manufacture all types of data and communication cables, including LAN cables of all existing – and even future – categories.
