WHAT IS THE RIGHT DIAGNOSTICS SOLUTIONS FOR YOU? Today’s mechanical workshops cannot function without diagnostics equipment but are you getting the best out of what you’ve got? And more importantly, is the diagnostics kit you have right for you? Your diagnostics equipment should give you confidence that you’ve found the root cause of a problem, enabling you to make a repair quickly, efficiently and, of course, profitably. Here COMMUNICATION There are three aspects to a diagnostic machine’s communication capability: vehicle coverage, communication protocols and the user interface. Broad vehicle coverage is now expected on universal diagnostics machines. Vehicles have had a standard EOBD (or, for older vehicles, an OBD) communication port for many years, so at one level, all diagnostics machines do cover all vehicles because they will be able to carry out a basic Read/Reset*. But all-makes workshops still get caught out now and then, so vehicle coverage is still relevant. Alternatively, you may be looking for specialisation. Vehicle computer electronic data exchange systems (communication protocols) continue to evolve, enabling more data to flow more quickly in either direction. Knowledge of the communication protocols of a particular machine will provide an understanding of what the machine is ultimately capable of, so it’s a key consideration when making a purchase. Finally, the way the software presents you with information, vehicle feedback, and options on the screen (the user interface) is a matter of individual preference but it’s important nevertheless. Firstly you need useful results, information that takes you further in your fault-finding; not data that throws up more questions. Machines that contain reference data that you can compare against your live test results have an advantage. Secondly even if you think you know the problem, with today’s interconnected systems can you be certain that simply replacing the component will resolve the problem with no come-backs? Features like guided troubleshooting, experts’ forums and live tech helplines all help you interpret diagnostic results more thoroughly, and quickly. ACTUATION – CODING AND SPECIAL FUNCTIONS The ability to instruct or code vehicle ECUs and components. Some diagnostics solutions provide OEM level aftermarket software and may well do so on a range of vehicles. Some offer Pass Thru capability that allows access to OEM interfaces and some offer the capability to download OEM software and operate it alongside the aftermarket software*. DATA RETRIEVAL The way a diagnostic machine handles data is important on two levels.

Car – 2006 BMWMini Fault – Window winder not operating Data – No fault found

2006 Mini was booked in to have driver’s window regulator replaced due to the window not going up / down. A very straight forward replacement and the window now works fine however when parking the car in the collection bay the technician noticed the remote central locking was not working and could not remember whether it did before. Fully expecting the customer to say the key had been working perfectly beforehand, he decided to dig deeper. The fob battery was replaced and basic programming technique used to no avail. Time to worry as the customer was collecting their car in one hour. Assist Plus was plugged in and vehicle scanned however nothing that would relate to the problem with the remote. Nevertheless, the technician forwarded the full scan to Autologic Vehicle Diagnostic Support, making sure to explain the issue in the ‘Work done to Vehicle’ notes section. He received a call from the BMWMini Team who asked him to sit in the car with a basic multi-meter on the 20hz setting. He was guided step by step to carefully remove the casing behind the rear view mirror and pay attention to two wires only (wire colours were pointed out as if Autologic were sat in the passenger seat!) while these two wires were probed a colleague was requested to press the unlock

button and then the lock button on the key fob. Assist Plus asked for the resistance seen which was zero. A double check of probe connection was made but still zero. On that information Autologic were happy to inform the key remote was not working regardless of what work had been done on the vehicle. Phew!! When the customer came to collect the Mini the reception explained how they hoped that by exchanging the drivers regulator the key may have started working again as sometimes they are related. The customer replied – “It hasn’t worked since I went swimming in the sea with the key still in my shorts!” The moral here is the garage owner was given solid confidence by Autologic Assist that they had done nothing wrong. I am sure as a garage owner / technician yourself you can think of MANY similar scenarios!

ONLINE TECHNICIAN ASSESSMENTS Preliminary online Technician Assessments help us to gauge every technician’s current ability and level of understanding – we don’t waste time going over ground that’s already been covered. The Assessment consists of a questionnaire divided into three subjects: Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, and Diagnostics. Each subject is further divided into five subsections focusing on particular vehicle systems with five questions each, so the candidate has 75 questions to answer in 75 minutes. The results quickly and clearly indicate the technician’s technical strengths and weaknesses. Technician Assessments are a valuable tool for employers, allowing technicians to be graded according to ability, and can be used as part of a strategic recruitment and remuneration policy. They also enable us to structure personal training plans, tailored to the individual needs of the technicians.

TAILORED TRAINING PLANS Depending upon ability, a personal plan will cover up to 18 different subjects at either Basic or Advanced Level, spanning either two years for Advanced or three years for Basic Level technicians. Each subject is covered by eight hours of e-learning, accessed wherever and whenever it suits the technician, and eight hours of on-site practical training. Onsite training takes place at a venue determined by the location of the trainees, and is restricted to no more than 10 technicians at a time. Personal training plans lead to Master Technician status, a degree of excellence that qualifies technicians for ongoing training on new technologies and systems implemented in the latest vehicles, allowing businesses to develop and diversify into new specialities and offer new services.

MASTER TECHNICIAN TRAINING At this level, courses adopt a modular structure, split 30% theory and 70% practical. Every two-day module includes an introduction to the course and details of the car, the system and its various components. The rest of the module is hands-on in the workshop, with a Master Technician and one of our specially prepared vehicles. We have 35 cars fitted with electronic fault simulators, programmed to reproduce up to 28 real technical faults. They are popular models that reflect the vehicles on the road today, the cars you will see in your workshops with problems that you will face. You can learn how to diagnose and repair faults on DPFs, DSGs, CVTs, Haldex systems, CAN Bus, Driver Assistance and Start/Stop technology, even electric and hybrid vehicles.

Course content is continually re-assessed and is aligned to the Euro Vehicle Troubleshooting online helpline – as the database grows, so these known faults and repairs are incorporated into the syllabus, to keep the training up to date and give technicians the information they need.

Practical training can, when convenient to those attending, be held in Euro Academy’s new IMI Approved Centre, where all training sessions are IMI Quality Assured. Of course, we can hold sessions at any suitable location if logistically preferable.
