As BUSHkids grow and expand our services, the importance of implementing and maintaining comprehensive Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures assumes paramount importance. Our Quality Assurance and Risk Coordinator liaises with the Maintenance and Safety Coordinator to regularly review and update WHS policies and procedures, and associated WHS documentation. All new employees and volunteers receive a WHS induction, which includes emergency evacuation procedures, fire extinguisher training, online access to all WHS policies and procedures, and guidance on how to complete Incident Reports and Risk Assessments. The number of BUSHkids vehicles has grown with increasing numbers of staff driving throughout the regions. This presents an increased risk to the organisation, which is monitored diligently by the Maintenance and Safety Coordinator with the assistance of Brisbane-based volunteer Rob Gluch. Rob meticulously checks all incoming vehicle logs and GPS tracking logs at the end of each month. As part of their induction, new staff must view an RACQ Driver Training video prior to driving any BUSHkids vehicle. The video provides useful tips on how to drive safely on country roads, how best to avoid collisions with wildlife, and discusses safe overtaking techniques and braking distances. Risk Management plays a vital role in all our activities and staff maintain the corporate requirement by completing thorough risk assessments for all outreach destinations, school visits, offsite playgroups, and so forth. These assessments encourage staff to think of possible risks associated with all new activities, help to identify hazards and consider new strategies to adopt to mitigate all risks. Work Health and Safety (WHS) continues to play a very important role within BUSHkids and we consider it a core responsibility of the organisation. We continually review our WHS policies and procedures to make sure we keep our workplaces as healthy and as safe as possible for both workers and visitors.
