Silence the risk of hearing loss
Every time you’re exposed to hazardous noise and you don’t use personalized hearing protection that fits properly or is worn for the correct amount of time, you’re putting yourself at risk. This is why the saying “a plug is a plug” is a dangerous misconception.
Over time, cells within the ear will start to break down and die, which may cause you to experience constant ringing, diminished hearing, and several other related health issues. Or worse – you could lose your hearing permanently.
Here's what you're up against: Temporary hearing loss – This is when the tiny hairs in your inner ear (stereocilia) become slack (ex: like after going to a concert). After a sufficient break from loud noise, regeneration is possible. Acoustic trauma – This is a strong, often irreparable loss of hearing after a single short, very high noise exposure or a series of high noise exposures (ex: the sound of a pistol or explosion). Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) – An early sign of hearing damage, this distressing condition is caused by both short and prolonged exposure to loud sounds and can become permanent (ex: working in a factory with loud noises for 10+ years). Permanent hearing loss – This arises after long-term periods of high noise exposure without breaks (ex: working in a factory with loud noises for 30+ years). The blood supply in the inner ear will be disturbed, causing irreparable damage to the stereocilia.

The life of stereocilia* When sound waves enter the inner ear, they create vibrations that are eventually picked up by microscopic hair-like projections, called stereocilia. These create the electrical signals needed to help the brain recognize and understand sound. Over time, the stereocilia can
become damaged due to age or exposure to hazardous noise. *NIDCD National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
