David Acheson, Ph.D.

David W. K. Acheson, M.D., F.R.C.P., is currently serving as a director on the AOAC Board of Directors. Dr. Acheson graduated from the University of London Medical School in 1980, and following training in internal medicine and infectious diseases in the United Kingdom, moved to the New England Medical Center and Tufts University in Boston in 1987. As an Associate Professor at Tufts University, he undertook basic molecular pathogenesis research on foodborne pathogens, especially Shiga toxin-producing E. coli . In September 2002, Dr. Acheson became the Chief Medical Officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Following several other positions at FDA he was appointed as Associate Commissioner for Foods, which gave him an agency-wide leadership role for all food and feed issues, including health promotion and nutrition.

Robert E. Brackett, Ph.D.

Professor and Interim Department Head Department: Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH), Illinois Institute of Technology

An accomplished speaker, leader, and educator, Dr. Brackett was appointed Director of IFSH, and IIT Vice President in 2010. Before joining IFSH, Dr. Brackett served as Senior Vice President and Chief Science and Regulatory Officer for the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) until 2007. Prior to that, Dr. Brackett worked at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FDA CFSAN), and served as CFSAN Director from 2004 until 2007. Earlier in his career, Dr. Brackett held professorial positions with North Carolina State University in Raleigh, and the University of Georgia at Griffin.

Samuel Godefroy, Ph.D.

Director General, Food Directorate Health Canada

Samuel Godefroy has a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. Dr. Samuel Godefroy is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Food Risk Analysis Journal and the Director General of the Food Directorate at Health Canada. The Food Directorate is the primary Canadian food standard setting body at the federal level. The directorate is responsible for developing risk assessments, risk management and communication strategies, standards, regulations and policies related to food safety and nutrition. Before holding this position Dr. Godefroy was a Research Scientist, Associate Director and Division Chief of the Food Research Division, and Director of the Bureau of Chemical Safety of the Food Directorate at Health Canada. He is currently Vice-Chair of the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission. Until September 2011 he was Co-Chair of the AOAC Presidential Taskforce on Food Allergens / AOAC Food Allergen Community. Dr. Godefroy started his career as an Assistant Professor and Technology transfer Officer and Project manager at the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie in Paris lecturing and leading research related to Bio-Processes and Biotechnology. He developed an analytical method program targeting immunochemical-based techniques for food allergens, growth promoters, veterinary drugs, pesticides and natural toxins. To support his efforts Dr. Godefroy received two innovation grants from the French Agency of Research Valorization (Agence Française de la Valorisation de la Recherche – ANVAR).
