a. Presentation: SPSFAM Advisory Panel Update and Priorities

Arora provided presentation 4 and background on the SPSFAM Advisory Panel and informed the group that the Advisory Panel had put together a draft list of potential priority topics for the SPSFAM to focus on. These topics were as follows:

x Microbiology x Heavy Metals x Produce x Trade Barriers x Melamine / Cyanuric Acid

Konings suggested using the broader term “nitrogenous compounds” instead of Melamine and Cyanuric Acid. Arora then invited Organizational Affiliates who had prepared presentations on their Food Safety Priorities to take the floor. b. Organizational Affiliate Presentation: Waters 5 Romano advised that while the whole area of Food Safety is important, global trade barriers are critical to the industry. Food trade has tripled since 1992 and consumption is increasing. There is currently a shift in production markets and tougher global competition. With that comes a requirement for better food safety capabilities. Global food exports should be protected, especially in developing countries. Technology must be made accessible to producers in all regions. c. Organizational Affiliate Presentation: AB SCIEX 6 Lock said that methods used by countries exporting to the European Union need to be improved. It is critical to have efficient methods in place. Standards for these methods are critical to ensure food is transported around the globe safely. Lock stated that some of the top challenges in this field are toxin detection, pathogenic micro-organisms, allergens and meat speciĞƐ and food adulteration. d. Organizational Affiliate Presentation: CFIA 7 Mohajer provided presentation regarding his organization’s priorities in food safety. Within CFIA there is a requirement for sensitive and specific method equivalent to the standard method that will have the shortest turn around time fit for regulatory testing. Turnaround time is critical for protecting the public. e. Organizational Affiliate Presentation: Nestlé 8 Gilliland stated that Nestlé is also concerned with meat authenticity, and advised that food adulteration can result in a food safety issue. Targeted and non targeted analysis is required for this type of adulteration. Discussion: Prioritization of Food Safety Topics
