Challenges

• Modernization of methods and technology has created expensive instrumentation that may drive the cost per sample too high • Mixed matrix – many foods are a combination of protein/fat/carbs and methods are challenged to recover the species at acceptable rates • Chromatographic separation needs to be improved for arsenic speciation

Discussion and Next Steps for SMPR

• Decide which elements and  food matrices are the priority • Elements that working group suggested as more pressing issues for food: As, Cd, Pb, Hg ( Se, Sn, Sb are of interest)  (Cr is not a hot topic)
