42 The Calls Hotel - Design Influence

VISION 42 THE CALLS HOTEL

SIMON POLLARD

42 The Calls Hotel - The Vision 42 The Calls Hotel was once the most desirable destination in Leeds, unfortunately its initial spark has somewhat diminished over the years and the business entered administration in February 2018 due to lack of investment. Having acquired the freehold and business in May 2018, I made it my mission to reignite the brand, and develop a 5-star, luxurious experience that exceeds all expectations whilst celebrating the building’s unique architectural heritage. It is my vision to work collaboratively alongside Leeds City Council in order to redevelop and transform the hotel in order to take it back to its roots of being in the Premier League. (Hopefully this will coincide with the City’s Football team!) In 1991, a once-grand 18 th century corn mill was redeveloped into 4-star 42 The Calls Hotel, forming part of the redevelopment of the once forgotten waterside district, which had begun to form the city’s trendiest area with investment from a variation of aspiring businesses who shared a drive to ensure that the area was not forgotten, holding onto its invaluable historical value. Hence why it became my vision to develop 42 The Calls into an opulent hotel and destination, and with your help, we can continue the reinvigoration and development of this unique and dynamic corner of Leeds. I have spent the last 24 years building highly successful businesses and have been chosen as one of Yorkshire’s stand out business leaders by the top business journal, The Insider. Their “42 under 42” programme recognises Yorkshire’s most dynamic and inspirational young entrepreneurs and celebrates their success in developing the regional economy. I am of firm belief that I have the ability to reset the vision whilst reigniting the fundamental, core values of 42 The Calls Hotel. This stems from my proven capability, from developing a number of thriving businesses, and balance of ambition to help rescue this local treasure which has been in desperate need of significant investment for some years. I plan to transform and redevelop 42 The Calls Hotel, put simply, into an outstanding, exclusive 5-star hotel in a truly unique setting as part of a dynamic, forward thinking vision paired with multimillion-pound investment. I will ensure a luxurious experience for all guests, through providing exceptional service and expanding the vision for the hotel, from simply being a place to lay your head for the night, into a fully immersive stay that transports you to a world of opulence. The concierge service will consist of handpicked staff who are committed to making sure your stay is one to remember alongside ensuring all guests needs are met from the moment they arrive. Arriving at the hotel will dazzle guests, with the opportunity to travel in style. If guests arrive by train, 42 The Calls Hotel concierge will collect them by a river boat behind Leeds station, whisking them along the River Aire to the back of the hotel within minutes, being met with a glass of champagne prior to checking in. There will also be Rolls-Royce’s situated at the front of the hotel, exuding luxury and providing 5-star transportation options for all guests who are travelling from far and wide as we seek to attract international visitors. Business amenities will be available which will be certain to impress your clients, with state-of-the-art meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi and contemporary private lounges, alongside being perfectly situated a short drive or walk away from central Leeds, and the Train Station. Our exquisite Champagne Lounge will be situated on the rooftop, accessible via a glass elevator and with a glass covered terrace accessed by iris recognition to members only, it will deliver unbeatable views along the River Aire, presenting an excellent opportunity to unwind and soak in the sights that Yorkshire’s finest city has to offer. We are also going to be developing a Café Bar, open to guests and passers-by alike who can expect to be welcomed in with aromas of rich, freshly brewing coffee, delightful pastries and homemade soups. It will become the city’s own European Café experience, with a sun kissed terrace adjacent to the River, where customers will be transported to idyllic Italian terraces. The redevelopment will blend high-end contemporary suites into the footprint of the 18 th century corn mill whilst ensuing it protects the precious heritage the building holds. I am extremely excited about the future and huge potential of this hotel and cannot wait to work together with your support to create something truly special, celebrating the unique history and heritage of 42 The Calls Hotel. Hopefully you will see from our vision that we have a real passion to deliver the very best hotel offering in Leeds and make very good use of the river Aire. I believe this project will be the catalyst to bring the Calls area back to its former glory and I for one look forward to doing the same in the hope that we can create something very special to attract local, national and international guests to Leeds City Centre’s most iconic destination.

Simon Pollard REDEFINING YORKSHIRE’S INDUSTRIAL PAST

Our concept looks to embrace Leeds’ industrial heritage; elevating materials, colours and textures associated with the great industrial age into luxury finishes and details worthy of the five-star hotel experience.

The Industrial Revolution provided immense change for Yorkshire. Coal, iron ore and slate mining thrived alongside cotton and wool mills. The canal and river provided vital connections and allowed the industrial revolution to change the face of Yorkshire industry forever. Business is still thriving today with a resurgence and pride in all things ‘Yorkshire’.

Where the River meets the land! The external terrace provides a dramatic impact on the current open space and creates a joint between the river and the hotel. A covered pergola allows guests direct access from the boat drop off point to the glass elevator. With an abundance of lighting and planting the terrace becomes an oasis divided into sections creating different vistas and talking points. The large firepit creates a focal point alongside the fixed seating arrangement and a sit up counter is provided around the central tree planter.
