THE PRO'S ADVICE MAKE YOUR MASONS’ COLD CHISELS WORK HARDER JOHN DAVIES CARPENTER

CUTTING BRICKS, BLOCKS & NATURAL STONE

For bricks or blocks make a light cut on every face with a brick set and club hammer, then complete the cut with firmer blows on the brick set until the cut is completed cleanly. When cutting natural stone with cold chisels avoid making heavy cuts in the middle of the stone, as the result is likely to be a complete shattering of the stone. Make light cuts carefully at the edges with the chisel angled away from the body of the stone.

REMOVING CERAMIC TILES

Masons’ chisels are ideal for removing ceramic tiles from walls and floors. With the chisel edge at a slight angle between the tile and the floor or wall, a sharp blow from a club hammer should be enough to break it free.

SAFETY

• Wear safety glasses and gloves when using any demolition tool or masonry chisel. • Use a hammer with a striking face twice the diameter of the chisel head.
