Power, Nation-States and International Relations

Human Rights and Activism

Social movements play an important part of change in society but how are they organized and what shapes their development? Students will take the role of an activist and examine some key human rights protests and campaigns like the suffragettes and civil rights movements. The stimulus texts for this unit include focusing on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and discussing key issues addressed in the films ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘Made in Dagenham.’

Students will take the role of an Australian government policy maker and present a multimedia seminar to the class interpreting the risks and diplomatic challenges of interacting with a nation-state that is experiencing conflict. Stimulus texts for this unit include the film ‘Hotel Rwanda’, government policy documents and articles from different news sources.

Development, Industrialization and Change

Social Policies – Comparative Debate and Change

Students will take the role of a feature article writer and investigate the opportunities and challenges for non- governmental organizations (NGO’s) who work in India. Students will explore and debate a range of authentic issues including international adoption, voluntourism and the juxtaposition of slum living against fast-paced modernizing mega-cities. Stimulus texts for this unit include the film ‘Lion’ and the award winning text ‘Behind the Beautiful Forevers’ by Katherine Boo.

Students will take the role of a university student who is interested in investigating different social policies in Europe. They will create a podcast interview and blog site to report their findings and suggestions for change to some Australian social policies. The stimulus text for this unit of work includes the documentary ‘Where to Invade Next?’ by Michael Moore and selected academic articles.
