and the design of a mine conveyor and decline system for a copper project in Australia. While gold and copper projects are well represented in Bara’s order book, the company is working – or has worked – on many other mining commodities. In Namibia, for example, it has an involvement in North River’s Namib project near Swakopmund, which is focused on lead, zinc and silver, while in the DRC it has been responsible for the mine design, equip- ment selection and production schedule for the Mpama North mine, part of Alphamin’s Bisie tin project in North Kivu Province. In Zimbabwe it contributed to Premier African

and Deswik.Sched (for mine design and mine scheduling respectively), AutoCAD (draught- ing), VentSim (ventilation simulation) and Helix (conveyor modelling). In respect of project man- agement, its software of choice is MS Project. A look at the consultancy’s current work- load confirms the breadth of its activities. Contracts underway (or just recently com- pleted) include a reserve statement update for an iron ore project in Ukraine, a coal project due diligence in South Africa, a mine infrastructure scoping study and DFS for a proposed gold operation in the DRC, a hoist- ing study for a copper project in Botswana,

One of the projects being handled by Bara’s UK office is Scotgold’s Cononish project in the West Highlands of Scotland – soon to become Scotland’s first gold mine. This is the view looking from the exploration adit down the Cononish Glen and shows the site of the future process plant building and tailings storage facility.
