In the De Wildt area 5 species of Franklin or spurfowl occur. High up on the mountain Crest one finds the Shelly’s Franklin while in the grasslands the Coqui francolin occurs.The three more common ones found in the plains are the Swainsons spurfowl the Natal spur fell and the crested Franklin. In recent years the yellow bellied greenbul has established itself in the valleys of the De Wildt area In recent times it has been noted that the Great Spotted Cuckoo is using the Common Mynah as its host. A morning spent in this region can be very rewarding. SPECIAL PLACES THE HOEKIE CAMP Set in indigenous woodland, the Hoekie has extensive camping and bungalow facilities. One has easy access to the mountain from this spot, rising some 300M behind it. They also host Team Building programmes, School Camps, Church Camps, Community Development and Outreach programmes. The Hoekie, has a variety of activities, from a large swimming pool, short hiking trails, archery, wall climbing, and many more games and creative problem solving activities. All structured to teach new skills, but also to transfer these new skills into real life situations. “Die Hoekie will soon be known as Extreme Life.
