Winebow Producer Book

VR Tejo , Portugal

Winery Overview Formerly owned by the Order of Santiago de Espada, Quinta da Lagoalva is now owned by Isabel Juliana Campilho and managed by her grandson, Diogo, who is also the winemaker. The estate is overlooked by the Campilho’s sprawling 18th century family home. The neighboring stable is home to Lusitano competition horses and a collection of antique carriages, one of which appears on the label of Lagoalva’s “Espirito” wine. Location of Vineyard Quinta da Lagoalva is located in the parish of São Eustáquio, in the municipality of Alpiarça, in the Tejo region. The Quinta gained a reputation in the 19th century for quality wine, olives, cork and fine horses. It is a working farm, which stretches 12,355 acres along the south bank of the Tagus River and is planted with vines, olive, cork, walnut trees, grains, lima beans and corn. Sheep, cows and horses roam free through the pastures. Winemaking Philosophy Lagoalva, which means “white pond,” is named for the beautiful body of water on the property. The soil is primarily sandy clay, which supports the growth of a number of indigenous and international grape varieties. The winery combines modern technology with diverse, New World oenological influences to achieve highly efficient vinification. The philosophy of the winemaker is evident in the pronounced personalities of the grapes, the avoidance of pesticides and herbicides and in the expression of microclimate and terroir .
