Mid-Winter 2012 Connections

Message from the Superintendent I t’s hard to believe we have transitioned into a new calendar year. Where does the time go? Besides trying to remember and getting used to dating our documents 2012, we should be reminded to take time and reflect on the wonderful educational programs and student growth that is occurring throughout the school district. With the support of the community, the district has been able to maintain student programs and a learning environment that is clean, safe and challenges our students technologically so they can compete in our global society. Wayne-Westland students continue to excel academically and receive regional, state and national recognition and awards. Wayne-Westland Schools has highly qualified staff in every classroom throughout Connections WAYNE-WESTLAND

the district. The district has also been recognized for receiving several awards, including the “Educational Excellence Awards” from the Michigan School Board Association and the “Muth Award” from the Middle Cities Organization. Whether it is our elementary Gifted & Talented Program, our High School Advanced Placement classes, state-of-the-art classroom technology, athletic complexes or extra curricular activities; we celebrate our students’ success and are proud of their accomplishments. Our 2003 voter approved Sinking Fund that has been used to repair our school buildings will expire this year. The challenge before us now is to keep our classrooms and buildings in good condition so we can continue the long standing tradition inWayne-Westland of providing excellence in education. Recently, the Board of Education unanimously agreed to bring a Sinking Fund renewal proposal before the voters of this district on February 28, 2012. The renewal of the Sinking Fund would be used to conduct major repairs to our facilities and sites without taking valuable resources from instructional programs. By law, Sinking Fund monies cannot be used for employee salaries or benefits. This is not an additional millage. This publication will provide you with information regarding the Sinking Fund renewal proposal. The Sinking Fund investment supports students, schools and our community. If your questions are not fully answered, I urge you to contact my office at 419-2010, so we may provide you with more information.
