Leave it to RHO and ALAN EDELMAN to come up with a clever weekend for their sons! This year is the Third Annual PABO experience. “POPPY ALL BOYS OUTING.” It consisted of 6 men– their son, John; son-in-law, Andy Groh; grandson, Benjamin Edelman; grandson, Ian Groh; two grand sons-in-law, Joe Young and Steve Catania. They gathered in mid-August for a weekend of fun? Or exhaustion! They began Friday with an hour and a half golf clinic with Kim and Chris; forty five minutes on the driving range and forty five minutes in the chipping area. They then played 9 holes of a mini golf tournament. After lunch, they went to the fitness center where Christine had a boot camp ready for them for one and a half hours. After collapsing, they had massages. That was not the end! For dinner, each son had an assigned item to make. Dinner was at home, however, not ready until 10 p.m.! Poppy was kind as he was assigned clean up detail. On to Saturday where breakfast at the 19th hole commenced at 8 a.m. Afterward, they had a pickle ball tournament followed by another 9 hole golf tournament. After lunch, there was a pitch and putt tournament. Dinner was at the Sports Bar– thankfully they were absolved from making dinner. Sunday morning, up at 8 a.m. where they joined Poppy at water aerobics class because they wanted to see what Poppy does at Frenchman’s. After that, they were off to the Beach Club for a swim in the ocean and Brunch. They came home, collapsing again and went home to Philadelphia, and New Jersey.

RHO and ALAN EDELMAN are so proud of their grandson, Ben Edelman, who was nominated and won an OBIE award for the Off-Broadway show ADMISSION for Best Feature Performance. For the same show, he was nominated for a Dorothy Loudon Critic Award, but lost to Nathan Lane.

HIGH LEVEL VISIT TO FRENCHMAN’S

ROBERT LIFTON brings us this exciting news:

Ehud Barak, former Prime Minister of Israel from 1999- 2001, who had commanded the country's elite special forces unit, was the joint most decorated soldier in Israeli history and rose to IDF chief of staff, is a long time friend of mine who has recently published a remarkable book about his life titled "My Country, My Life" (St. Martin's Press). In my e-mail to him and his wife Nili, congratulating him on his wonderful book, I also wrote about the Paradise we enjoy in Frenchman's Creek and invited them to see it if they were ever in this area. It turned out that they were available on September 29th and LORETTA and I had the pleasure of dining with them at the Beach Club after drinks at the

Sports Bar. It was a perfect evening enhanced by our attentive staff led by Cindy Teyssedou. In her e-mail afterwards thanking us, Nili acknowledged that Frenchman's Creek did indeed appear to be a Paradise. Incidentally, the Barak's went on to New York City from here where our grandson, Matt Hooper, was able to do a two hour video interview of Mr. Barak based on his life experiences as reflected in his memoirs. It is being edited and will be published in various forums that Matt works in.

BRINGING FCTV TO FC LIFE WHY!!!! As we all know, Life Changes and so it has for our TV Specialist, JP Caldwell had to resign his position, so we are bringing you a little of FCTV’S new events to FC LIFE, just for this issue! MEET MARC HOFFMAN our new SPORTS BAR MANAGER. We know him from the Beach Club you are saying, but see Marc in a new light. At the Beach Club, he was in a traditional elegant culinary setting where

at the Sports Bar, he can be creative, fun loving and a free spirit! The following are some of his new ideas. Wine Down Wednesdays was in the works before he became manager, but he put the idea into motion and fruition. He suggests, bring a friend, a guest and enjoy the live music of Darrell Gwinn, bass guitarist or dance if you so wish. By the way, the menu specials change every Monday. Another new innovation is “Mixology Tuesday,” happening every other Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. It is dedicated to the arts and crafts of mixology. Starting date OCTOBER 9TH. Object begin with an original mixed drink and he will show you all the variations of the drink. Another Tuesday, will be “Battle of the Bartenders, where members will be the Bartenders. Some Tuesdays will be for members to decide the cocktail of the month! If members have a drink, the club does no offer or one you have had elsewhere and club does not have, bring it to the bar, all the members present will sample all the drinks provided and made at the bar by the member, and vote which drink will be the new cocktail of the

month! Then another Tuesday will be Celebrity Bartender where one member is the bartender for that 4-6 time period. Come and find our how good your neighbor is at tending bar. Marc will continue to implement fun things for the sports bar as he would like it to be your place of going 4-6 p.m. or after hours, after mov- ies, dinner elsewhere or you want to come after dinner at your own home and/or have nothing else to do – come and enjoy the company of your neighbors and have fun at the Sports Bar.

FCTV CHANNEL 999 NEWS By Norma Lippman, FCTV CHAIR

JP Caldwell was here a little more than a year, but in that time, he did wonders for channel 999, our Frenchman’s Creek closed-circuit television. JP is an outstanding TV technical person who recently left Frenchman's Creek staff for personal reasons, and during his time with us we acquired a Canon videography camera, a Canon DSLR 6D (photography and videography) camera. All lights were upgraded to LED's. Plus, we now have battery powered lights for mobile use. Also, we now have FCTV studio, which is located in the old art studio. It is furnished with a green screen wall, storage space for equipment, sound proof flooring and sound proof moving blankets. In addition, we have been upgraded and converted from SD to now HD (high definition). Though we are sorry to say good bye to JP, we are thrilled to welcome

ANGEL SOTO , our new Audio Visual Technician. As a multi-award winner and entertainment professional, Angel is always looking for the next opportunity to bring quality and impact through his work. He recently graduated college this year and already has a publication posted on the WPTV news site. Angel has worked in many different areas of both the film and animation industry since starting out in 2013, and he is always looking for exciting new experiences that will force him to think outside the box and use his creativity in new ways.

We welcome Angel to our staff at Frenchman’s Creek.

BEVERLY HALPERT so graciously shared this wonderful news with us. As last season closed, my hubby STUART was recognized in New York City as the 2018 Volunteer of the Year by the Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship, a global organization that reaches tens of thousand of young students. Much of Stuart’s volunteer work has recently been conducted in and around Southeast Florida, and over the last year, at our local Palm Beach Gardens Regional High School in particular. I know that he has enjoyed immensely bringing numbers of Frenchman’s Creek Members over to the School to assist with the mentoring, and I thought this report from NFTE might be of interest to our members. I am very proud of him. Looking forward to a new season. By Beverly Halpert NFTE’s annual Global Showcase brings together members of the NFTE community from across the world. Students and teachers as well as program alumni, volunteers and sponsors. With representatives from nine different countries participating, it’s truly a global celebration. This year, one of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Alper Family Foundation Awards for Volunteerism. Patti Alper, a trustee of the Alper Family Foundation and a NFTE board member, was on hand to personally recognize the winners. Stuart Halpert, 2018 Individual Volunteer of the Year Stuart Halpert, Chairman Emeritus and Senior Advisor at First Washington Realty, was among those honored last night. Stuart received the 2018 Individual Volunteerism Award for his deep commitment to youth entrepreneurship and his invaluable contributions as a classroom mentor and coach. Alper Family Foundation Awards for Volunteerism Presented

As a volunteer in South Florida for more than six years, Stuart has served as a guest speaker, competition judge and business coach. He also re- cently spearheaded the effort to expand NFTE programs to Palm Beach County, and is currently a business coach with two NFTE classes in that region. Stuart often stops by the schools to meet with teachers and discuss ways he can be more involved. He truly embraces the chances he gets to connect with all NFTE students, not just those he will be coaching.

In addition to donating his time, Stuart also invests in NFTE and the entrepreneurial spirit through financial commitments, as the adopter of a Palm Beach County class. He also dedicates his time to helping the Future Business Leaders of America program at the school whenever he has a chance, and is so involved with various business programs that the Magnet Coordinator knows him by name. Stuart not only makes a difference in the lives of young NFTE entrepreneurs, but also those of students who are interested in business but may not be able to join a NFTE class yet. His amazing dedication to community and his commitment to entrepreneurship education is an example for all our volunteers.

Flowers, walls and yellow butterflies by Norma Lippman

It started small. Early in the summer the grassy areas in front of the Golf Shop were being pulled out due to root damage. Landscapers were building walls of pretty pavers and filling the spaces with lovely pastel flowers. It looked really nice. And then they started to multiply and it seemed there were paver walls and flowers everywhere! I spoke recently with Steve Thomson whose team, including James, Emmanuel, Noi and oth- ers, did the work and Steve explained that man-made features like the walls, when used in landscape architecture. are called 'hardscape'. The specific flowers and powder puff trees were chosen to attract birds and butterflies. These changes will require less maintenance and will save money. Steve Thomson is Director of Landscaping for the POA and is in his eighth year at Frenchman's Creek. He said there will be no new walls for a while, but keep an eye out for a new aerator fountain coming soon to a lake on the North Course. Over the summer, there have been some big changes here at Frenchman's, and for many of us, one of the most exciting is.... Frenchman's Creek is going green! We are already phasing out styrofoam cups and plastic straws, cutting back on water bottles indoors (they will still be available outside) and recycling our cardboard boxes. We began with an energy audit from FPL and are implementing many of their suggestions, such as LEDs and motion sensors. Our staff has created a Green Team and they are recycling flash drives, cutting back on use of paper, using reusable linen liners in trash bins as well as other innovative ideas. We are considering addressing the issue of food waste by acquiring a composting machine and turning our "edible garbage" into compost which can be used as fertilizer. Owls and bats are nocturnal creatures that live here and consume huge numbers of insects so we are building 'houses' to encourage them to join us in this space we call home. Several communities in our area have honey bee hives and are harvesting the honey and putting it in jars to be given as gifts. We are thinking about this. Henry David Thoreau said, "What's the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on." We are going Green by Norma Lippman

Looking forward to a greener Frenchman's Creek.

Tiffany DeSouza, who was our Fitness and Spa Director and brought the Fitness and Spa Center to new heights, has resigned to begin a new journey. Acting as Interim Fitness and Spa Director is our long time Assistant Fitness and Spa Director, MARISOL JIMENEZ , who was born and raised in Colombia and moved to this area in 1977.

She began in housekeeping at Frenchman’s Creek, moved to the food and beverage department, but her passion for health and wellness guided her to the fitness industry. In 2002, she became an aerobics instructor, Latin dance teacher and continued her education specializing in aesthetics and skincare. In 2006, she obtained her Independent Personal Trainer Certificate. This brought her to the role of Assistant Fitness and Spa Director. Marisol is looking forward as our new Interim Director of Fitness and Spa to enhancing the lifestyle of our members.

Marisol reminds us that the Health Fair 2018 will be held Monday, November 5th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Fitness and Spa Center. At the Health Fair, if you have Medicare or health insurance coverage, you can get a flu shot at no charge.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW SPORTS COMPLEX Frenchman’s Creek has a new sports complex located behind numbers 10 and 11 of the North Golf Course – where the basketball court is located and adjacent to the pickle ball courts. It is for games and sports. You have to visit the complex to see all that has been created. In addition to the courts there is a gazebo and a large grassed in area. By the way, the basketball court has been improved and modernized. The complex is for games as well. Here is a list of activities available at the new multi-sport facility area providing fun for all ages! • Basketball • Pickleball • Giant Chess and Checkers • 3-Hole Putt Putt • Horseshoes • Snookball (Soccer Billiards) • Ping Pong • Cornhole Cornhole (also known regionally as baggo, bags, sack toss, or bean sack) is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bags of corn (or bean bags) at a raised platform with a hole in the far end.
