Choosing Cylinders

THE RIGHT LEVEL OF SECURITY FOR YOUR PROJECT High security cylinders can make a big difference to the safety and security of public buildings, offices and homes, and are a simple upgrade to the lock system. There are many cylinders on the market which conform to British Standard (kite-marked), however, not all offer the same resistance to attack. Our high security cylinders are designed to combat common methods used to compromise locks and gain entry, including defence against lock bumping, picking, drilling, pulling and more.

MULTI-PIN CYLINDERS This refers to the number of locking pins within the cylinder that combine, when used in numerous variations, to provide the different key options. The more locking pins located within the cylinder the higher level of security is achieved, e.g. 10 or 15 pin. Multi-pin cylinders also have anti-bump, anti-pick and anti-drill properties.

SECURITY DEFINITIONS

ANTI BUMP A cylinder can be bumped using a blank bump key, an easily made key that simply unlocks the door. The blank key causes the two sets of pins to separate allowing the lower pins to align and the lock to turn. Anti-bump cylinders include mushroom or spool pins designed to shift and jam if the lock is bumped, making it virtually impossible to turn the lock. ANTI PICK The lock-picking method works only when pins are set in one continuous axis. Using a lock pick or pick gun, the pins are raised one-by-one to get the correct pin level, allowing the lock to turn. In an anti-pick lock, pins are fitted on multiple axes making picking very difficult. ANTI-DRILL This type of lock has hardened pins inserted which makes drilling out the lock harder and frustrates most burglars. ANTI-PULL The anti-pull cylinder includes a reinforcing bar so that the lock cannot be pulled out of the door easily. ANTI-SNAP Anti snap cylinders are designed to resist attack by breaking away only the front section when forced. This ensures that the vital components for unlocking the door remain unaffected.
