The New Build

2.1 EC members will notice significant progress. The Project Manager is attending to every aspect of the new build. There are daily site meetings between the building site manager and hotel general manager. There are monthly meetings of the whole team. The latest minutes of such a meeting are attached form information. I speak to the Project manager each Friday. The building contract includes penalties on the contractor for delays in completing sections of the new build. Already we have had to impose some of these for late completion of the car parking areas and the GFTU Office. The end date for the whole new build is still seen as May 19 th 2019 the first day of our BGCM. 2.2 Footings are in for the housings and brickwork is beginning. Second floor brickwork on the room extensions is now under way and roof trusses are about to be installed. The new GFTU office has two or three more week’s work to complete. The main car parking and lighting is complete. The new path lighting is complete. Internal fixtures and fittings have been chosen. 2.3 Several discussions have been held about marketing and managing the new housing and marketing the new hotel and managing the new GFTU classrooms. 2.4 Some new physical GFTU Office re organisation will be needed. Consideration of the best use of our paper archives will be given to see if another room can be released. 3.1 I have met with our sponsored project Shout Out currently taking political literacy into schools. A number of fruitful discussions have been held and two proposals have been drafted, one relating to an apprenticeship scheme and another to an event to celebrate the work of the project, see attached. 3.2 Our priority campaign is to see the introduction of a statutory Youth Service. There has been much activity around this. As Chair of Chooseyouth I drafted the main response to the Labour Party Consultation on this. See attached . Please note the consultation has been extended to November 30 th . I have spoken at a number of Conferences on this issue. An All Party Parliamentary Group inquiry in the Youth Service was also held over this period and evidence given. 3.3 The GFTU paper Political Education has been welcomed by the World Transformed group and they would like to make some amendments and circulate. 3.4 As previously reported I am Chair of Ruskin College. The recent decision having been taken to keep the College independent means that the whole College is engaged in an exciting programme of building a development plan to open a new chapter in the College’s 120 existence. I raised at the last GFTU EC the need toc consider putting forward new Board members for the College and two unions have expressed an interest. 3.5 I have an outstanding meeting to be held with the Principal of Kellogg College Oxford concerning support for our education programme. 3 Education agenda.
