53 V IEW OF THE H ARBOUR A N D LANGEBRO BRIDGE 174 7 Compared to cat. no. 52 the on ly difference is that the artist has moved the field o f vision a little towards the south. By doing so he managed to place Langebro bridge in the centre. The long wooden bridge from the end of the 17 th century is in the m iddle provided w ith a drawbridge, m aking it possible to sail through the harbour. O n the rampart to the left the sentry leans against his rifle, while a group o f keen fishermen sw ing their rods. To the right o f the bridge there is a boat full o f musicians, w hile from another boat people fish w ith nets. The proper name goes for the canal as w ell as the street. Frederiksholm and Slotsholmen are connected b y the bridges: Stormbroen and Marmorbroen (in the fore ground). O n the left we see the recently built Prinsens palæ (the Prince's House), while on the right one can just make out the corner of the riding ground. Like in Roque's other works the streets are crowded w ith ornamental fi gures in constant movement. 55 PRINSENS PALÆ c. 1746 A lread y Frederik IV had acquired land and buildings on the corner of Frederiksholms Canal and N y Vestergade. 172 5 the houses were rebuilt for a residence for the crown prince - Christian (VI). A bout tw enty years later his n ew ly-w ed son, Frederik (V), needed a suitable habitation, and consequently Eigtved, the Court architect, was asked to design a new house in this place. 174 4 the house was finished, parts of the old house being incorporated in the 54 FREDERIKSHOLMS C A N A L c. 1745
