Comparison of 4 different external beam RT techniques: 3D CRT, IMRT, helical Tomotherapy, proton beam therapy

Average heart receiving 20% and 10% of prescribed dose in left-sided pts (N=19): Proton 0% 0% IMRT 1.2% 4.0% 3D CRT 1.5% 3.1% Tomo 8.0% 19.4% Time consumption: beam-on time <5 min (3D CRT, IMRT, proton) For Tomo therapy beam-on time is 10-15 min P<0.001 Conclusion: All 4 techniques show acceptable coverage of PTV breast. However, effective sparing of non-target breast was achieved at the cost of considerable dose exposure to the breast, heart and lung in Tomotherapy
