Gothic architecture = The architectural style of the High Middle Ages in Western Europe, which emerged from Roman- esque and Byzantine forms in France during the later 12 th century. Its great works are cathedrals, characterized by the pointed arch, rib vault, the development of the exte- rior flying buttress . Gothic architecture lasted until the 16 th century, when it was succeeded by the classical forms of Renaissance. The Gothic Revival of the 18 th century flourished in Europe as well as in the United States. It is called the Late Gothic Revival or Victorian Gothic.
