Norman architecture = The Romanesque archi- tecture of England from the Norman Conquest until the rise of the Gothic around 1180.

north aisle = The aisle on the left side of a church as one faces the altar; so called be- cause most medieval churches invariably had their sanctuaries at the east end and the main doors at the west end.

obelisk = A monumental four-sided stone shaft, usually monolithic and tapering to a pyramidal tip. In Egyptian art, such a shaft is covered with hieroghyphs; originally erected as cult symbol to the sun god.
